ShellyBeggs
My 7mo kelpie boy had the snip on Friday....he also had his umbilical hernia repaired! Both with no external stitches! He had a penicilian shot before he came home..... Just last night in checking his wounds I noticed that they are slightly reddened..... not hot, no discharge and is not tender to touch (with disinfected hands....). He is as energetic as ever and is eating the same as always, he doesn't seem in discomfort and was happy for me to have a look and a touch - in fact he seemed to think I was going to scratch it for him. It was the first day he was home unsupervised and I suspect had a great time playing after being kept quiet all weekend. Well as quiet as possible with a kelpie pup... I also notice he keeps trying to lick the where he has been shaved (very little attempt at the wounds) but his elizabethan collar is rubbing over the wounds and could be irittating it! Should I be worried about infection and take a trip to the vet........or give it a good clean with hibitane and put some betadine or detol cream (non-stingy) on it a few times a day and see how it goes over the next 24-48 hours??? What about a melolin wound covering to stop the bucket rubbing???? any advice would be great....thanks guys...... Edited to add that I was suprised the vet didn't recommend washing it with hibitane or similair to keep it clean.....is this to do with the no external stitches??? Rappie
If you are concerned then just go for a quick visit to the vet and get someone to have a look at the wound - there should not be a charge associated with this. Generally speaking, I don't recommend applying anything to surgical wounds, nor routine cleaning (although there will obviously be the exceptions involving rolling in something filthy etc). With intradermal sutures in place, I would not scrub with anything, if you feel that you must apply something then you could dab a little betadine on it. Poodle wrangler
Redness and inflammation suggest infection. An infection that starts off like this would be pretty advanced b4 he seemed sick. My vet wouldn't charge for a quick look at the wound, but he (and she) are great .
