New Vaccine For Dogs

G'day Everyone,

Has anyone heard of/or used the new vaccine which only requires 2 vaccinations one at 6-8 weeks and the final at 10-12 weeks?

Our vet recommended this vaccine for our new weim pup.

Here is part of the information we received about it.

"The new vaccine has some major advantages: the first is that it overcomes the maternal immunity, so that the pup can repond fully to the vaccine as early as 10 weeks of age. So now a vaccination given at 10 to 12 weeks of age does not have to be repeated at 16 weeks. The pup just needs to come back after a yaer for its first annual booster. The second advantage is that after the first annual booster vaccination the C3 component of the vaccine lasts 3 years. The KC component still only lasts one year. SO your dog still needs to come in once a year, but the vaccination he receives will vary each year (one year C5, the following 2 years just KC, then C5 again)

In summary, The pup can have full adult protection at any age from 10 weeks on, and will need one less needle then previously. A week after this vaccination, they may then go to the park and socialise with other dogs quite safely. This new vaccine represents a huge innovation in the vaccination options we have for dogs and we believe is a quantum leap forward for the healt and well-being of your pet."

Does anyone have any advicee regarding this before we go ahead with it?

Getting a new puppy now, it's certainly new and different for me to the last time when I got my Wei puppy back in 1993. Then, it was boosters at 12, 16 and 20 weeks. So now it's only 1 compared to 3 before - I got very confused talking to the breeder about vaccinating my new puppy!

It's not "brand" new but relatively new.

You'll probably find some vets may be reluctant to use it as they may miss out on an extra consultation fee. The vaccination is definitely as good as it sounds and enables you to get the pups out and about for socialisation purposes earlier and without reservation.

Sounds great - aah so that's why some vets don't seem to use it. does' anyone know what the actual vaccination is called.? I am going to ask about it next time I go to the vets.

It will depend on what vaccine the breeder gave at 6 weeks.

We in 20 odd years have never given the 16,20 boosters actually dont now many that do.

Some 6 week vacc do follow a programme but with all our pups we stick to the good basics as pups.

We then will look at the options for the 12 month booster

The 3 yearly vacc has been around for a while now

I just got this for my pup last night, she was the first 10 week old puppy my vet has vaccinated with this vaccine. She needs to go back in 4 weeks to get the last KC vaccine but then not until she is 15 months for the next one and then 3 years after that.

Hi

I took my new yorkie pup for a check up the other day and the vet recommended this new vaccine, it sounds good and he said that is was the same as old vaccine ie no new side effects etc.

Good to hear others comments though.

My new vet has advised me that all C3 vaccines are good for three years...but that the 2 kennel cough products are only good for a year. He doesn't seem to believe in over-medicating (yay!), does believe in a raw, whole foods diet (yay!) and does believe in rescue and rehab (yay!).

He also advises against having the dogs jabbed for Lepto unless they are regularly exposed to boggy or swampy conditions during the Wet season. And he doesn't give it via a C7 but as a stand-alone and he recommends just once a year at most (other tropical vets routinely give it as a C7 AND every six months). :p

Gotta love a sensible vet that loves animals. ;)

Or maybe some vets prefer the idea of an annual vacc & check-up so they can pick up on any problems before it's too late...

i would be interested to know what the vaccine is.. is it modified live formula or killed/inactive formula? or is it just a higher dose of what they might already give at 8, 12 and 16 weeks?

that might be over kill for some pups and they might not be able to handle the vaccine. whereas some dogs might take it fine.
