Miss Helena
Out of interest I've done some research on heartworm prevalence around Australia, and all I could find is that it's higher in tropical areas such as QLD. I'm in Adelaide and will ask my vet next time I see her, but was curious if anyone knows the current situation re heartworm in Australia? FYI I have my dog on Heartgard monthly chewables...the company aren't kidding when they reckon dogs love them - there must have something very yummy in them! (besides beef) Many thanks, Helen
poodlefan
Heartworm is transmitted to dogs via an intermediate host: Mosquitoes If you have Mosquitos where you live or visit, your dog may be exposed. In hotter wetter areas there will therefore be a higher risk of exposure. I do know of at least one Canberra dog that's been tested positive for heartworm. The Spotted Devil
The treatment is very serious, too, so I would rather be safe than sorry.

deltron
I know a few breeders who dont heartworm thier dogs (in Victoria), and none of thier dogs have had heartworm. However, i heartworm my own dog. I'd feel extra guilty if he got heartworm and I knew I could have prevented it.
