hortfurball
My little foster girl has slightly runny stools with a hint of blood. Her diet has changed, her environment has changed.(she only came to me three days ago) Could this be as simple as worms or a change in diet or home? How worried should I be? sandgrubber
I run a boarding kennel. Blood in stools is fairly common in the yards I clean up (maybe one in twenty dogs. . . wild guess). I have asked my vet about this and she says that it is not a RED ALERT problem with dogs, and is often insignificant. Of course, it's best to get it checked out. But it isn't a matter for panic as it would be for humans.
SueM
It could be a bit of gastro, I have had a couple of foster dogs with it and a bit of medication and it clears right up....
fiery_di
Canine colitis?? There is a thread I responded to a while back that outlined the symptoms, etc. I will try to find it and post the link...
fiery_di
Blood in Stools thread Here is the specific one I was thinking of.
shmoo
do you feed bones? could have torn her bowels. i would keep checking. if the blood goes away i wouldnt worry. but if it gets worse or keeps persisting consult the vet.
blacklabrador
Could be just a bit of bowel irritation - but if you don't know where she has come from then make sure she has a good worming - hookworm can cause blood in the stools.
honeychild
Happened to one of mine once, it was an infected anal gland...
rose of tralee
Consider whipworms also, they live closer to the end than hookworm therefore blood from them usually brighter. Don't panic if she otherwise seems well but would want to see it stop soon/ try establish a cause.
Scales of Justice
Could be due to coccidiosis which can stay fairly undetected in the bowel of infected subjects but only become a problem when the dog is under stress (ie. in boarding kennels or changing home). Josh Grant
I would say coccidiosis as well - escpecially if the dog was previously kept in an environment with poultry and birds, as unless reguarly wormed they are VERY susceptible.
hortfurball
A big thanks to all who replied, so sorry I didn't return, I'd forgotten I'd posted it  I put her on chicken and rice and it went away after a day or so. Was very worrying at the time though.
