Dust Angel Posted July 17, 2007 Share Posted July 17, 2007 Ok so about three weeks ago Sienna had a really wierd episode, it was fairly late 1am, and wed had a busy day so were only just climbing into bed. As soon as she started to relax and fall asleep she started having what i can only descibe as as spasms. It started off with just her legs strectching out and i thought she was just stretching, however it got to the point where her back was arching and her whole body was stretching out down through the legs. I of course pulled the vet out of bed, however he sugested that seen as there were no other symptoms that she would be fine. The strange thing was appart from the wierd cramps there really was nothing else wrong she lept of the bed and into action when i let her outside with no sign of stiffness etc, she was completely normal untill she tried to fall asleep, it starts of small then gets worse- she doesnt seem to stressed by it but when it gets fairly strong shell shift position or look at her tummy (hence the thought of cramps). Eventually shell fall asleep (usally takes an hour or so) and once she is asleep she seems to be ok, except last night it continued faintly every time she woke up and went back to sleep again. It has happened twice again since then and although my vet isnt concerned, i of course am should i take her to another vet (nearly two hours away) has any one heard of this or seen something similar. First time she must have stretched in her crate and there was a blood curdling scream. I thought she must have caught her foot in the crate but not so. She stood and cried and arched her back right up for what seemed lik ages but was probably only seconds. The second time we are not sure what happened but he was in the yard, I was at work and OH was at home but working when the neighbour rang him to say she was lying down crying. He went out and called her and she bounded up to him as happy as Larry. Third time was a repeat of the first. The 3 attacks happened in about one week. I took her to the vet and they thought a partial obstruction - everything was working as per usual and she was eating and drinking etc. After many tests and examinations by 2 vets they came to the conclusion that as she was in season this must have been what was effectively menstrual cramps. This was her first season and the situation has not arisen again with her next season having no sign of the problem. Dust Angel Posted July 17, 2007 Author Share Posted July 17, 2007 hmm sounds a little similar except she isnt actually trying to stretch it seems to be invlountary and its always when she is lying down trying to sleep. She is a little overdue to be coming into season, this is is the first season since our other gsp girl got desexed so pherhaps that could have something to do with it? Do they have an impact on each others cycles - or pherhaps something is wrong? BTW people please dont flame me Sienna is undesexed ATM as one of her littermates died during desexing and the another two were touch and go so we are acting on vet advice and she is due to be desexed after this season. She has survived two season and will without a doubt survive this one all the precautions are taken and there is no way this girl is getting pregnant! Shes going in on Friday so maybe he might find something? He doesnt seem all that concerned, actually he didnt think she needed to go in suggesting that it might be something that she just has to learn to live with. Scales of Justice Posted July 17, 2007 Share Posted July 17, 2007 (edited) Magnesium tablets relax muscle cramps and relax the nervous system. Your dog may actually have an electrolyte deficiency which is causing muscle spasms (which the magnesium will help). You could also purchase an electrolyte replacer (which greyhound people use for their racing greyhounds). You can get these from any pet supplier. Dust Angel Posted July 18, 2007 Author Share Posted July 18, 2007 Ok thankyou, i will look into that shes on a fairly balanced diet that many DOLers recommend, however this could make sense as it is usally 48 hours after she has had more exercise than usal. cavNrott Posted July 18, 2007 Share Posted July 18, 2007 I have my 2 large breed dogs on Scheussler Tissue Salts, Magnesium Phosphate. It's a muscle relaxant. It's made a big difference to the dogs. The Myotherapist suggested this product when one of my dogs was getting muscle spasm in the shoulder. She rarely gets muscle spasm now but will do if I run her too hard. It used to be a daily problem. I take these tablets myself too because I was getting night time leg cramps and the Mag. Phos. seems to have fixed that too.
