Kingsleychi Posted July 16, 2007 Share Posted July 16, 2007 I orginally posted this is the breeders section but realised there are probaly quite a few people that arent breeders that could probaly give me some advice on this. We received in rescue on the weekend a heavily pregnant bitch that is oh so skinny. The poor thing was all bones and one big belly. I have been feeding her on the puppy diet with lots of fresh meat and covering it all with teh puppy milk but i was wondering if anyone knew of anything else i could feed her to get some weight on. I would say she is about the 59th to 60th day and im so worried that she will whelp and have absolutely no condition to care for the pups or herself. Any advice would be greatly appriciated. She is also one just over a year old hmmmm yes i know we are not happy and we have no idea what breed the father was. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Dog_Horse_Girl Posted July 16, 2007 Share Posted July 16, 2007 I'd suggest Satin Balls, there's a recipe here somewhere...and lots of heart if you can get her to keep it down...lamb is great but any heart is fine. Heart is excellent b/c it's both an organ and muscle meat, is very rich in the B vitamins and has a heap of protein to boot. Also, porridge is good...and pasta with egg cooked through. Firstly cook the pasta, then mix up some eggs, pour the egg and fork it through the pasta, into the microwave oven for a few minutes and you're done! Sorry to bring a bit of a gloomy aspect to the post but in this case I think It would be better for the bitch and the poor puppys that will end up being PTS anyway - We have enough puppies being put to sleep already without bringing into the world anymore cross bred pups who will face this Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Most bitches that are heavily pregnant that are lucky enough to make it to a rescue group have their pups and the pups are usually homed to great families very quickly. morgan Posted July 16, 2007 Share Posted July 16, 2007 Late term abortion is a caesar, which is very expensive for a rescue group and totally unwarranted surgery, especially for a poor girl in such neglected condition. Major surgery is hard enough on a person or animal in excellent condition. Why not give her the chance to whelp naturally? A few more days will see an improvement in condition, and to pts an entire newborn litter IMO is just too cruel for words. If it is a huge litter then maybe cull a few smaller ones to make it easier for her to look after them and to find homes for, but the mental anguish the poor mum would suffer if her whole litter is taken away just doesn't bear thinking about. She needs carbohydrates of any description at this stage, pasta, rice, mashed potatoes/pumpkin, 2 minute noodles,oats mixed with raw chicken mince (pet grade which is high in fat)...........There isnt much point now trying to get nutrients to the pups as she will whelp any minute now. I have heard that Cod liver oil is very good and also that a little apple cider vinegar ( unpasteurised) helps maiden bitches birth a little easier.! Good Luck and let me know how you go! I will keep my ear out for anyone looking for a rescue pup. P.S someone said that aborting a whole litter was to cruel for words: My response to this is rearing SOME rescue pups are reared to an age where they are quite independent and then the ones who do not find homes are euthanaised or alternatively allowing them to live for a few years in a home before being returned to the pound for euthanasia, by some unresponsible owner . However a previous post has led me to believe that this is not the going to be the case with these guys - and I whole heartedly support their enthusiasm and endeavour in finding ALL the pups great homes Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

But as the others stated the condition that this girl is in i wouldnt want to put her under any more distress or pressure than what is really really really necessary. And the pups will be fine, we have a wonderful bunch of people that will always look out for these guys and im sure we can find them wonderful homes once they are old enough. BomaBec Posted July 20, 2007 Share Posted July 20, 2007 (edited) Just to let you know she came into us thin and she is gaining weight and is being extremely well cared for now so I highly doubt the RSPCA will be wanting to take her off us as.... generally they only intervene in cruelty cases or where the dog has no food water or shelter... which is just not the case here or ever in our rescue group. We are very good rescue group and our dogs are well cared for once in our care. We have a great set of vets that we can work with if there are any complications and we wouldnt hesitate to take her if there were some. All the pups will be sterilised wormed and vaccinated before they leave as well as the mother and we will let them go to only the best of homes that are suitable for their breed,... what ever that is.... as Chicko stated we do home checks aswell. Personally I cant even imagine 'culling' any of the pups and would rather hand rear them than let that happen..... no matter what the breeding! Ditto for what SLLH... we are well prepared and have experienced carers amongst us. Kingsleychi is doing a great job and words of encouragement and advice are the only things relevent in this post. Steve Posted July 20, 2007 Share Posted July 20, 2007 This recipe is intended to be fed raw. 2 kg pet chicken mince 1 cup of wheat germ HALF kg of oatmeal (uncooked) 1/4 Cup vegetable oil 10 eggs 3 tablespoon of gelatin 1 tablespoon molasses a teaspoon of iodised salt SPLASH OF APPLE CIDAR VINEGAR 2 tablespoons vegemite Mix all ingredients together well, much like a meatloaf...give small amounts often Add one blackmores pregnancy multi vitamin per day for 1 week then drop it back to half a tab per day.
