EmmaKate
My little pup and I are booked in for our first introductory session and assessment at Australian Dog Training on Sunday morning. I am very excited, can't wait to get the little tacker on the straight and narrow.......so to speak! (Not that he's incredibly bad, but habits may be forming). But am actually just really looking forward to getting him out and about and socialising and having some fun. I have never done dog training in my life (other than home stuff of course), so have no idea what to expect??
ShellyBeggs
Expect to learn a lot.....and to feel enthusiastic about trying everything all at once..... The thing to remember is to make it fun.....make it fun for you and your pup! It shouldn't be a chore. Take some treats and a toy...... I would suggest getting there a smidge early so you and pup can have a little walk around and get comfortable with your surroundings...even if you can only walk around the carpark or the street. And remember that the only dumb question there is....is the one you don't ask. Good luck and have fun!!!!

Ausmoz
Emma's going to her first training session this Sunday too - but in Adelaide. We went without her last week for our intro session. I'm really looking forward to socialising her, and meeting everyone else's dogs of course! I just hope she wont be the naughtiest dog there
Joan of Arc
Oh have fun guys and please let us know how you all go this weekend. Its is such a hoot to work with your best mate and have them just so eager to oblige you - and once you start to have those few little wins where he/she will sit and stay on a hand signal etc you will feel a little euphoric. Plus your mates are more fun then because they are not going feral all the time. Good luck
Cosmolo
Remember that the intro session for ADT is just that- an intro session, so not alot of training happens on that day. It is an introduction to the organisation, how its run, assessment of your dog, costs etc.
EmmaKate
Yes I know it's only intro and assessment, but I'm even looking forward to that! And just happy and excited we are making a start! Edited July 13, 2007 by EmmaKate

badboyz
Actually I am starting obedience with my boy in my avatar tonight. I am really looking forward to taking him cos he is such a responsive dog. He went to puppy school and was great, but then we have been busy with showing. Now that he is titled in conformation we are going to work towards a dual title! Can't wait to start - even though it will be cold! Then agility/flyball, we can go on forever! He can be the most titled shar pei in Aus - that would be cool! Edited July 13, 2007 by badboyz

badboyz
Thanks EmmaKate - I think he is a spunky boy too! It was very chilly. Dylan, as usual made me very proud. He picked up everything effortlessly. He is used to working with me from his show career and is very focused. Only thing that we will have trouble with is having him learn to sit beside me and not stand in front of me, as he does for showing. He attended puppy preschool at the same club when he was about 5mths old and I was amazed how much he remembered. He even remembered to drop on his first go, even though we have never practised it since preschool. Mind you the minute class was finished and we started heading back to the car, he started pulling at the end of the lead towards every available tree. I wonder if that will ever improve! I would like to be able to walk him without the drag factor. Another problem was not with him, but with other dogs perception of him. He behaved beautifully and ignored the other dogs, but some, a german shepherd in particular, reacted every time they looked at him. I think due to his tight high set tail and small, flat ears, other dogs see that as an agressive stance. Poor misunderstood Shar Pei! Good luck with your dog's Emma and Ausmoz. I hope you have as much fun as we did. We can use this thread to follow each others progress!

EmmaKate
Sunday went well, we had our intro and Humphrey's assessment....he got 9 1/2 (10 only for dogs with previous training)! He did this weird thing though, when the woman tried to pick him up he went in to this yelping frenzy which he has never done before. Don't know if he got a fright or if he was a bit sore somewhere, but he was fine after that and otherwise very well behaved. So off to class next Sunday morning all being well. I think we are going to sign him up right up to Platinum, I was happy with gold but the OH wants the whole works....very odd because we haven't seen eye to eye on any training (that's why I thought this would be particularly good for us, so we could learn and be on the same page), I really thought he would dig in his heels and not want to go beyond puppy class, but I think he was quite impressed with the club....as was I. Now things at home are much better on the training front, we are both really wanting to be consistent and there is far less stress (with me no longer in neurotic psycho mode!) Everyone was very friendly and helpful at ADT, I think we are going to have lots of fun there. Where's my rock, you choose your level of training, call the office and find out your options, they are very friendly. It was Humphrey's first time on the lead too, and he was really good on it. We walked him back to the car in a round about kind of way, and he was great no pulling in either direction.....I'm sure he'll soon learn he can!! I took him out the back allyway of my house today too on the lead, and he walked beside me the whole time.
Ausmoz
Our training with Emma went pretty well too. It was the first time she'd been around so many other dogs, so she was often distracted. It was all very exciting for her, and she cried and jumped up a bit, but she wasn't particularly disruptive, and she did settle down well at other times. Overall it went really well. We have come away with so many different things to practice though, I almost wish things were moving more slowly.
EmmaKate
Hi Ausmoz, is that Emma in your Avatar? (Great name by the way! With that name she'll be flying through the training, top of her class! hehe ) Glad it went well for you!
Ausmoz
Yep, that's her It is an easy name to train with, but there's also a "Gemma" in the class, so it was a bit confusing at times. I'm glad to hear that Humphrey did so well too
deltron
Charlie, myself and my OT will be attending an introductory session at ADT this Sunday arvo. Hi to anyone who goes to Oakliegh Sth already, we might be joining you shortly! I'm hoping Charlie will get a lot out of it. He is 13 weeks and knows 'sit', 'drop', 'get back', 'shake hands', 'beg' & 'fetch'. All that goes out the window if he sees anything moving or if he thinks the floor is too cold to drop ;) We are thinking of taking him to 'gold' level.
