Janis Posted July 7, 2007 Share Posted July 7, 2007 Hi, We will be pickingup our new Cavalier pup on Wed. I havent had a pup for a long time. How can we make her first night here happy & peacful for all of us including her. I have a bed etc & thought we might set up the play pen to keep her confined at night while we are all in bed. Any other useful tips & hints to make it a good night for everyone. She will be inside & no other dogs inside with her. Look forward to all replies. I have a cav puppy too you should check out the cavalier photo and chat thread in the breed sub forum we would love to see some more pics and hear more about you new pup :D I would suggest putting her bed in a crate or a large box next to your bed as it is alot easier to toilet train them that way. She wont want to do her business in her bed so she will cry and ask to be let out and then you can take her outside and she wont pee and poo all over the house Also ask her breeder if you can have somthing that has been in with the mother and puppies to take home to your house like an old towel or stuffed toy or somthing so she has some familiar smells with her at your house. Good luck for your first night with the pup :D im sure some other people will give you some more usfull advice for your first night with her. You say you have 1 other dog that was outside from the start so he had company....... with what? I did not ask these questons to waist your time, I did ask them in order to give you the best possible advice. In order to do this I don't just jump in without finding out more info unless the problem is clear from the start, which yours is not. When you have other dogs in the picture it is important to include them in the senario if you can provide me with more info, settling your new puppy in for the first night does include any other dog. The best way I know how to settle a puppy in for the first night is ask the breeder: what puppy has been fed on and when the last time it was fed before travel if less than 1 hour before travel wait a while before heading home as it may vomit in the car. The breeder should provide a sample of food in order for the owner to use and at the same time depending on age of pup use a quantity of 3/4 food provided to 1/4 of new food should be fed 1 hour after arriving home. 3/4 of food provided to 1/4 of new food should be done for the first day or so the gradually increase the quantity of the new food until after 7 days the puppys is eating the new food that the owner is going to be using. Also ask breeder where and what puppy has been going to the toilet on. If it has been on pads or newspaper do not continue this at home as it makes toilet training difficult for owner. When puppy gets home put it on the front lawn as it will need to go weeees after travel. If no front lawn is avaiable owner needs to think before hand where they want the pup to do the toilet and set this up before the pup gets there so they are ready to take it straight from the car to the toilet area. Once puppy has done weeeees then take it into the house. Let it sniff the surrounds and after 3mins take it to the toilet area again. When the puppy has been fed after 1 hour of arriving home it will need to be taken to the toilet area again straight away. The owner also needs to decide before hand where the puppy is going to sleep when it is an adult and start straight away by having the puppy sleep there. Warm blankets and something from the breeder as a reminder to the puppy is a good idea. A radio left on low in volume is also another good idea so the puppy can hear sounds around it. Fresh water in a bowl aswell. Please ignore any howls or screams the puppy may make. This will only last 2 nights and then puppy will be comforatble with the sleeping area. In addition to the sleeping arrangements I have always brought the toilet to the pup. If you want your pup to wee and poo on grass, gravel.paving etc........ then provide a reseptical like a large cat litter tray or something similar that your pup can easily enter, with the desired substrate in it the pup will smell the substrate and use it for the toilet. The pup should be introduced to any other dog members of the family the same night it arrives home. Do this by holding pup in your arms and bend down so pup is not above older dog. Let the older dog sniff the puppy keep your voice out of the situation when the older dog looks at you as if to ask what do I do next, then tell the older dog to sit and give a nice tasty treat when it does. Further meetings with the older dog should be done on a daily basis but this will require you to have more advice after 2 days of your new puppy being at home. I know this may be the longest post in history but the advice above has never failed for me and was taught to me by a very wise person in relation to dog behaviour. The person who taught me this was like myself from the UK. If anything is not clear do not hesitate to ask further questions. She will be 12 weeks when we collect her, she has her mum & dad at the moment to sleep with inside the house. Breeder has told me about her toilet training so far & I will continue with the same routine. I just wanted her to be happy sleeping on her own pretty much. She will be introduced to the other dog when we get home. He is great with little dogs so should be fine. I also plan on taking her to puppy preschool & obedience training later on. Thanks for your help I will certainly take it all in & give it a go. I have 3 kids that will keep her very busy during the day so im sure by night she will be buggerd & will be happy to go to bed. fingers crossed anyway. :D Thanks again. Georgie-boy Posted July 7, 2007 Share Posted July 7, 2007 (edited) A crate will be your best friend. Both my Cavs started out in their crate beside my bed until they got the hang of things. Just put some bedding and perhaps a snuggly toy in there for her - the stuffed dog toys with the pretend heart beat would be ideal. She may cry a lot but thats to be expected as she will be in a new environment and not have her mum & dad like she is used to. The key will be perseverance and consistency. How exciting for you - not long now! I think we'll be seeing more of you around the CKCS thread - look forward to meeting your munchkin! Tilly Posted July 7, 2007 Share Posted July 7, 2007 Take a few towels/blankets with you and get the breeder to give the mum and pups a rub down. Then use the towel/blanket in the pups bed. sas Posted July 7, 2007 Share Posted July 7, 2007 (edited) A wire crate that is big enough for the dog to stand up and turn around but no bigger You'll need to get the puppy used to the crate during the day, i.e. feed the dog in the crate, play with toys in the crate, each time puppy falls asleep pop them in the crate. Many people pick up the water bowls an hour before bed, then when you want to go to bed tke puppy out for a toilet stop, then pop puppy in the crate with a small chew treat, a hot water bottle is also a good idea. Also having a good play with puppy an hour before bed will help puppy get to sleep. Now, be prepared for some whining, crying and screaming. Ignore it all, it's really hard not to feel bad but just ignore it. During the night puppy may whine, this will be your indicator that puppy needs to toilet, go to the crate inbetween whines if you can, don't say anything to puppy, get puppy out of the crate and take it to its' toileting area and give the toilet command then praise and do your normal toileting ritual. No playing though. When puppy has gone to the toilet take puppy back to the crate not saying anything. Puppy may need another toilet stop through the night. My puppy was able to hold through the night at 11 weeks, he's a giant breed though so may very well be different for your puppy. Good Luck! T-shirt etc. I place that in with the puppy a week before they leave here so they have the new smell and it is familiar to them when they get to their new home. I wash the item a day before they leave so it now has the pups smell and the litter mates on it. They also leave with a soft toy that has been with them since they were old enough. Since I have started this routine I have had no upset puppies in their new homes. Maybe a bit late for you to send something to the breeder but make sure your pups comes with a blanket or something from his environment. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Poodle wrangler Posted July 9, 2007 Share Posted July 9, 2007 A crate is a great idea for toilet training and preventing damage by puppy if unsupervised for a few hours. Some crates have a partition/ divider which allows you to easily make the crate larger as pup grows. Pup+blanket from breeder should go in; only big enough for pup to stand and turn around, otherwise it will simply wee in the corner away from its bed. Pups shouldn't wee where they sleep and eat. Crate is meant to be a happy place for pup- you feed them in there, give treats in there- so it becomes a den, not a cage . A smaller one (cav size) is great for the car, too, as most puppies vomit until used to the car. I bought one for my standard poodle, but found I didn't need to use it as he slept outside and toilet trained quickly. Sold it. Plan on at least 2 toilet breaks overnight- make them as boring as possible for pup (it's not playtime) and wait until results happen: Praise++. It aint over til it's over . So i was thinking (please tell me if it wont work) but i have a kiddy play pen at home that i used around the old fire place I was thinking of putting her bed & food in there to keep her contained in at night. I am 4 & half hours from home & cant find a crate . Have advertised on here in wanted section. If we get time tomorrow on our travels will see if i can find one. Sarah L Posted July 9, 2007 Share Posted July 9, 2007 Hi janis, can I firstly say that no where in my last post to you did I recommend you to leave your puppy outside on the first night home. All recomendations from me where treating your pup as an inside dog. Crate training is a very good idea, however what is the point in getting a crate and still teaching an 11 week old puppy that it gets out during the night for wee's and poo's. At 11 weeks your puppy should be trained straight away to hold on during the night as its bladder mucsles are more developed than that of a giant breed of dog. Why you are being told to ignore whinning and howls one minute, then if the dog whines it means it needs the toilet is beyond me. Dogs do not urinate or deficate in their bedding area this is correct. You can withhold water one hour before going to bed. I am glad someone else told you this. However for very sensative puppy owners this is hard for them to accept. It is also not he be all and end all to successful toilet training. Start as you mean to go on. That is what my last post was all about. It is far more important to establish a new pup coming home with what you are going to have that puppy doing in your lifestyle than what it did with the breeder. No matter what you do I STRONGLY RECOMMEND you leave a radio on at night complete silence to a new puppy in a new environment means it will howl for attention in some way at some point. As I said toilet training is all about assosiation. Just because you give a puppy a substrate in a receptical while it is not supervised does not mean the puppy assosiates this with toileting in the resepticle. They are far more responcensive than that. This was recommended to you because although your pup may be an inside dog then I expect you will want it to do the toilet outside. This is why I recommended a recepticle with the same substrate as you have at home in the back yard. Everything I said still stands. However I hope I have made it more clear to you and wish you every success with your new pup. Alternativley you can ask me if something is not clear. I am happy to post in the list my qualifications and experience in dog training and behaviour. I have nothing to be sneeky or hide on the subject of dogs. I wish every dog who has a human companion every success and I am always open to new learning myself and not just getting my ego in a not because someone new has joined in a forum. I have taken your advice along with others & will do what we can & use advice as it suit the family. Thankyou very much It is appriciated. Our first night home & so far this girl has been to the door everytime she wants to go out to the toilet. So I have done as such. And she has been to the toilet 2 out of 3 . She hasnt gone ot bed as yet & we couldnt find a crate at such short notice so I will put her bed & food bowl in a sectioned off area and see how we go. I will leave radio on as suggested so she isnt to unhappy thoughout the night. We traveled a big day today from Warragul to Moe to Leongatha then 30km out of Geelong to pick up Lily then 3 hours home so been a long day I am nearrly off to bed myself. will update some pics tomorrow & post them.
