Poodle wrangler
I'm planning to trim Charlie's woolly jumper (his fur ) and bring both dogs inside at night as it's getting a bit cold. Should he be able to hold his bladder overnight at 6 months of age? He's a standard poodle, about 20kg, in case it's relevant. It's likely I'd not hear him if he cried to be let out overnight. Any suggestions very welcome ;)
pawpaw
My girl is crate trained and was able to hold on the whole night at six months old. However, if your pup is used to having free roam of the backyard during the night, it's hard to say whether they are used to sleeping through. You could always put some newspaper down inside so they have a spot to go in case you don't hear cries during the night. Hope all goes well.....it is getting chilly ;)
Reddii
CK (BC) at six months was about 16kg and could not/would not hold all night. At 8 months he's about 18kg and is fine through the night now. Hope that helps.
laffi
My golden is 5mo+ , she is crated at night and can hold it. She is less than 20 kg. She has been night crated for about a month now without any accidents. Edited July 3, 2007 by laffi
bloss344
Leah is 4 mo 15kg and can go from 10 o'clock until 5 or 6 am. She's crated and has been doing this for about 5 weeks, so your pup should be able to do it, but may need a bit of training the first few nights as he's not used to it. Bokezu
My little girl is only a bit over 3 months and rarely needs to go overnight, I guess all puppies are different and it would depend on when they have their last drink and what time they go to bed, and what time they get up. The Spotted Devil
I have one of those annoying puppies that stopped toileting overnight by 10 weeeks  He has access to a bowl of water all night and sleeps in an (open) crate in the laundry. I always gave him a few sheets of newspaper for the night time but he stopped using them within 2 weeks. Zig goes to bed at 7pm (I know it's early but he's such a sook and loves his bed) and I just got him up for his last toilet at around 10.30pm. Back to bed with a chicken neck, and will sleep through until about 9.30am if I let him. He's about 23kg at 8 months but has been in this routine since we first got him home. Good luck! I LOVE Standards - they really are the most gorgeous puppies :p
Janba
My young border collie has been holding on all night in his crate since I got him at 11 weeks . Convincing him that weeing inside when he was free was not on took a lot longer  Edited July 3, 2007 by Janba
sas
Dante could hold through the night at 11 weeks. I've had 6 month old fosters that were: 2 x BC crosses and 1 x Whippet cross and they could all hold through the night. Dogsfevr
Has the pup ever been inside over night or been in a position to learn to hang on??If not then i would presume no the pup wont simply due to not understanding the concept but some pups are very good at it,i have had 8 week old that never messed but they where inside from day one & confined at night
Sarah L
Poodle wrangler do you mean you have never brought any of your dogs inside until Charlie, who for some reason you now want to clip in the middle of winter. Or have you clipped your dogs before in winter but left them outside. I only ask because I am a thinker before I do. Any further information you can give me will be helpful in solving your problem. Sarah L
Sounds like all the dogs you get have remarkable bladder control but not much said on their behaviour, toilet traning dogs is one of the easiest things to assosiate if done correctly. I am still dumfounded why so many people have this problem in their dogs. Obviously they are still getting the wrong advice what do you thnink? fluffy2
I have to confess that I have always gotten up and given my young dogs a toilet break at 1am (standard poodles) I probably stop doing this around 10 months of age. Although they can hang on I think it is better for them to toilet and have a little run around and then put to bed with a pigs ear or biscuit and then they sleep until 7am which suits me
Poodle wrangler
Poodle wrangler do you mean you have never brought any of your dogs inside until Charlie, who for some reason you now want to clip in the middle of winter. Or have you clipped your dogs before in winter but left them outside. I only ask because I am a thinker before I do. Any further information you can give me will be helpful in solving your problem. Well when you put it like that By clip, I mean a #4 body with scissoring legs which is not anything like the summer "shave offs" you might be thinking of (?). I normally clip both poodles all over monthly. Face, feet, base of tail get done more often to keep them clean and comfortable. Obviously I wouldn't shear him very short all over and leave him outside in the middle of winter . Why not leave him as is? He'll have a difficult to manage coat by the end of winter if I don't clip him shorter before then. I thought now is preferable- August is normally colder around here. Both are active dogs who get dirty, so a longer coat means extra bathing and grooming, no fun for any of us . Both dogs have been sleeping outside since we got Charlie at about 10 weeks of age. He's now about 7 months. The older dog used to sleep indoors during winter only. Weather's not extreme here and they have shelter, bedding etc. I've not clipped him yet. Think I'm going soft . tree
Angus is 10 months now and still usually has a 2am pee break every night. I don't mind getting up as he's straight to business and back inside on his bed within about a minute It really doesn't bother me. Just think, how would you feel if you really had to pee but had to hold it all night? If they need to go, then they need to go.

My guess is that behaviour is not being discussed in this thread because it's about whether or not the pup can hold on all night and not about behaviour. My question to the OP is, has this pup been inside and house trained during the day? Since he's been outside at night since he was a baby puppy I doubt he will hold it all night. You'll probably have to get up and take him out at least once. If he's never been house trained then it's pretty certain he won't hold it. My dogs are all inside dogs and they have access to outside 24/7. They have all slept through the night from about 16 weeks of age. At that age if they need to pee they take themselves out. wednesday
My new pup who is 12 weeks on Tuesday can go from 11pm until 6:30am no worries. She too is crate trained, and we've been slowly extending the time that we're letting her out.
