FGM
Just wanted to know how often should I give my maltese/shih tzu cross bones. She is only 4 months old. She really loves them of course and I have got a nice butcher who has given me some small size. What bones are the best?I know this has probably been asked before but I can't find it anywhere. Red Mal
Do a search for BARF or Raw feeding, which should give you some more info Are you feeding them to her all the time (as meals) or are they justs recreational bones (chewing for pleasure) ? Guest
I have a small breed also, and have found that RAW chicken bones are best (for pups and small breeds). As a pup I used to give him my dog) RAW chicken necks but as an adult he now gets a raw chicken wing after his evening meal. I find it (the bones) extremely beneficial for keeping his back teeth clean. Unfortunately he's not really a chewer or gnawer of bones and normally upon receiving one or a rawhide bone he goes and buries it and I usually find it a few weeks later soggy and filthy at the bottom of my bed where he thinks he's cleverly hidden it I can't stress enough about the chicken bones being raw, you'd be amazed at how many people still give their pets cooked bones to gnaw on. After seeing a splintered, cooked chicken bone puncture the eosaphagus of a friends dog, I will never make that mistake!
FGM
Thanks Rocky, yep I know that bones have to be raw.Chicken wings and necks don't last long with this one and I wanted something that would last. She is such a little chewer.OH calls her a land piranah!hehehehehe
Red Mal
You say you have a friendly butcher. Ask for a quartered pigs head then. That will give her something to chew on, and will keep her entertained for ages. You may have to retrieve the teeth later, as some dogs bury them ;) As you have a small dog, maybe chop it up a bit small, but not too much Edited July 2, 2007 by Red Mal
Falling_dawn
shanks are good for a little dog but not cheap anymore 2-4 $ each depending on size
shmoo
Keep an eye on her poo's. Too many bones can cause constipation.
