Too Cold Outside For Toilet?

Ok so it's my pups first day home and I couldn't get him till 7 so he's only just settling in.

But i really need a hand with one question. I just took him outside to go to the toilet cause he had had a drink and waited about 10 minutes with him sooking most of the time. Its pretty cold and windy outside and the grass is wet, then he went soon after coming inside.

So i'm wondering if i should keep trying to get him to go outside tonight (while its wet and cold) or setup newspaper for the night and try during the day?

I want him to be trained to go outside so yeah.

Please any quick advise would be great.

If you want him to pee outside, start from day one.

Go and get him a coat tomorrow,

when i got Atlas we had some shocking weather, he soon learnt that the longer he sat there sooking, the longer we sat out in the cold, he would run and pee, poo and run to come back inside within a few days

I say start as you mean to go on

Every 2 hours, after eating, drinking, waking up and playing. 10 mins max (due to cold) and constantly say your toilet word - treat when toileting achieved, ignore if it goes inside.

Wet inside soon after coming in? You need to stay out longer. It's not over til it's over . Use flashlight if needed to see he's done the deed. Go out when he wakes up after a nap (even if short), after meals, if he hasn't been out recently.

Treat and praise for weeing/ pooing outside and give it a name you're OK with. I sound like an idiot because I chose "wee wee" with my pup who's now a large dog . Ignore accidents. If you catch them mid-act say a non-hysterical "no" and take outside immediately. They'll then be too shocked to do anything, probably, but get the idea inside isn't the right place.

Stay warm yourself on these "adventures" and set an alarm for overnight pit stops. My first dog was a winter puppy. So much better going outside in the warmer months with no. 2. I'm sure he'll be fine for toileting, but I'd not leave a pup outside in sub-10degrees for more than an hour or so.

Being only a relatively new puppy owner myself, I am not sure if this is the right advice, but our Staffy puppy pulled all sorts of tricks to get back in the house as soon as possible, including fake squats - how does an 8-week-old work that out? On one of the 4am trips she worked out that weeing on our old door mat was infinitely more comfortable than the cold pavers. Bingo, she started going outside quite quickly. We disinfect it every couple of days and it is no longer the door mat, just her cold-weather wee spot.

Agree with the door mat approach! if it's outside, it's outside! with my adult dogs, housetrained as adults, in the wet and windy weather a couple of the girls make it to the outdoor undercover area and I leave newspaper out there pegged down under some bricks plus some puppy wee pads from the petshop (maybe these are impregnated with the smell?) - works fine.

Giving your sitution of the one night inside isnt the end of the worl but today is a new day & you stick to the routine.Make the most of the daylight hrs to get pup used to the backyard,the more confidience they have outside the more content they are to be there.I also suggest lead training puppy asap & when doing the late night or even day toilets place on lead & give set word.The key is not to make toilet training a game in the sense it forgets what it is doing,the game is for when it goes.Be very calm,using Toilet as you key word ,consistancy is the key & do alot when its light

Thanks a lot for all your help guys, I think I just paniced and got worried about him being out when it was so cold. I think i just needed reassurance that he would be ok and i wasn't doing the wrong thing by him thats all.

So far he's had a couple of sucessful trips outside today so we'll get there eventually.

Oh and he's an 8 week old beagle who we've called Cooper.

OMG what a georgeous beagle puppy!!!

In my experience beagles are easy to housetrain with the all the tips already mentioned but be warned, they can be fussy about going out in the cold and sometimes dont want to get their dainty little feet wet :D If they think something fun is happening out there though you cant keep them in so during the day at least maybe take a toy out and try a couple of minutes of play, they toilet.

And till he's a big dog he may expect you accompany him outside if its cold and rainy. ;)

What a gorgeous puppy Browney!

I brought my Whippet puppy home on a May day that it had snowed!! Toilet training outside started straight away :D A coat was a must, as it still is with a Whippet!!

I've recently started toilet training my little fella too. If he hasn't been in a while and starts sniffing around more than normal, I'll take him out and won't come back in until he's done something. He's usually a little distracted when we go out for a bit, then he'll sniff around a bit more and finally go. I've been going out and walking around the yard in the rain so he'll hopefully think nothing of it too.

It's a good idea to pay attention to how long after his meals until he has to poo so you know whether to wait for that too.

I grew up with an outside dunny and had to go out in the cold night.. so if it was good enough for us as kids then it is good enough for the dogs..

Even though with the sodden mess of the backyard they are FINALLY getting the picture, suprisingly problem child is brilliant now..
