poochie Posted June 26, 2007 Share Posted June 26, 2007 After reading alot of past threads regarding raw feeding, I noticed that most DOLers blend veges or fruits together, freeze, then thaw when needed and mix with raw meats, offal etc. Is there veges/fruits that shouldnt be used apart from onions, garlic (that one always confuses me -is it just not raw garlic?) dried fruits, and I have heard grapes and stone fruits, should'nt be used and is there some fruits & veges that are better than others? Thanks laffi Cheers :D Garlic is ALWAYS added to my vege mix.......You have to feed an awful large amount to be toxic, and not many dogs would want to eat it in large quantities anyway........People have been feeding garlic to their dogs for ever, as it is a natural flea repellant , they used to also feed sulfur for ticks, before chemical preparations were invented. high starch veges like potatoes can be used in small amounts occassionally, but they usually cause gas, as does cabbage type vege.........green leafy veges are best as are herbs.........I usually only use pumpkin occassionally & always feed that cooked & mashed (as are my potatos)..........Most fruits are fine, I find mine dont like citrus like oranges, so I never bother, usually apples, pears, banana, kiwi, and anything I have available........ Dogs are carnivores, so any fruit & veg is in such small and infrequent amounts it really isnt a problem......I have seen the pinned thread, and most of it I dont agree with, as it sounds like you can not feed anything safely, it fails to say that anything in volumes is not good for them (apart from meat & raw bones)...a dog will not keel over & die from eating a grape for example! As few as a handful of raisins or grapes can make a dog ill eta: it leads to acute renal (kidney) failure pumpkin is good for regulating poos. my guys get some every night. potatoes should only be fed cooked, preferably mashed. Veggies pureed raw or can be steamed (whole raw veggies, such as broccoli or carrot sticks, are not harmful but can't be digested by dogs so they don't get any nutritional value from them). Good veggies include carrots, celery, all kinds of greens (kale, collard greens, mustard greens, bok choy, cabbage, spinach, chard, parsley, cilantro, etc.), lettuce (anything but iceberg, which is not very nutritious), broccoli (in small quantities), brussel sprouts, zucchini, asparagus, turnips, parsnips, etc. Edited June 26, 2007 by shmoo Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I have much to learn -Nemo Hi Nemo, Rhubarb leaves are toxic to everyone and everything, we did not even feed them to the chooks (and those guys used to eat just about everything). Grapes and dried fruits do cause renal failure, it is best not to test how much your dog can eat, just in case you give more and have to make an emergency dash to the vet at all hours. Our boy loves a mixture of veg but his favourite at the moment is sweet potato and zucchini all mashed up together. He loves most fruits too (apple, pear, banana, rockmelon and watermelon)...
