A Question From My Neighbour

 Share

Recommended Posts

my neighbour dosent have internet access and she has asked me to ask a question, she breeds pedigree golden retrievers. i know this for a fact as she has certificates and ribbons all over her walls and she also has her kennel advertised at the vets and council offices.

ok her dog has had a litter of 7 puppies 15 weeks ago and she has only sold 2 she has them all vaccinated, wormed, microchipped and health screened by the vets for hip problems and health in general before they go and she sells them for $300each. shes worried that she wont beable to sell the other puppies as she was told that people dont want to buy puppies in the colder months, is that true? as her other litters were all born in september and january and they all went really fast at 8 weeks old.

her puppies are getting older and she refuses to give them to a pet store or shelter and she said if needs be she will get them desexed at the appropriate age.

what advice can you give her to sell her puppies faster. she has also advertised in our local papers and in a few out of state papers, but no ones responded yet.

To hold on to them until they find good homes, I have seen people on this forum hold onto their puppies for a few months.

If she is a registered breeder I think she can advertise on DOL and there are other various websites you can advertise them on. $300 is really cheap though.

I don't really know. Just tell her to keep them until they find homes.

where are the pups located?

I know when I was looking for a golden retreiver pup I rang the NSW golden retreiver club and they have a lady who you rang about pups, if she is a member that's another option.

That's how I found my Onslow, whilst Tilly was found by an advertisement in DOL breed pages so that's another option.

$300 sounds very cheap for a registered breeder??

I would honestly say if she shows then she should have no issues in being able to sell via referrals, also if she is a memebr of the goldie club in her state they do list litters availble via members.Goldie pups arent hard to sell & if shes a breeder & shows then she should be very aware of the best places to advertise & the vets & offices certainly arent .She should be paying to list herself in the breeders directory of her state journal etc etc

But something sounds a tad odd she should seriously be having no issues in selling them if all is well

Adoption rates slow down in winter so I imagine the purchasing of other dogs does too?

As a breeder she should keep the dogs until they find suitable homes. Maybe you can help her out with some online advertising:

These are places we advertise rescue dogs....(most being free to advertise)

She may be a registered breeder but she sounds like she's having quite a few litters! If she had a litter in Sept then another in Jan and this lot are 15 weeks old. That means she must have had another litter in March...???

I was under the impression that 'reputable/responsible' breeders typically bred if they wanted to add to their show stock and the remaining pups are sold to other breeders or to approved homes as pets. Or am I completely mistaken here?

Hopefully these puppies will find homes, otherwise the responsible thing to do would be for her to keep them.... and maybe not have any more litters for a while.

.... health screened by the vets for hip problems and health in general before they go ...

This isn't the same as hip scoring both dam and sire. Hip problems won't show in a pup until they're at least a few months old (plenty of heartbreaking stories on DOL  ) , so that's why it's so important to health test parents, not pups. Too late once they're born :o .

Perhaps she does this?

Only mentioning it as a lot of BYB, pet shops pups and DDs advertise pups as "vet checked", but it doesn't mean much.

Sometimes when selling pups, you come to a "flat spot" and run out of enquiries. I've just had an circular from a breeder in another state, wanting help with placing 3 pups (not golden retrievers).

You can advertise for weeks, with no response and then you have 6 people enquiring.

Perhaps you could register her on here, and post a notice in the breeders' section? Otherwise, notices at the vets, supermarket, ads in the paper.

$300.00 sounds awfully cheap to me for A purebred registered Golden.

Perhaps this is the problem We sell our pups ( Scottish Deerhounds, not a popular breed ) for $1000 and no-one EVER queries the price.

I don't know Goldies, but it seems to me they are very popular and, I would have thought they should sell for $1000 easily.

This may sound venal ( sting the buyers for as much as you can..... ) but we have found that if you sell cheap the buyers do not value the dog and may treat it badly...... Yes, we have had a bad experience of this.....

Questions.... ARE they purebred ? Registered ? Inoculated ? etc.. etc..
