Dog Medications

Recommended Posts

After reading through quite a few posts I noted that some pets are put on medications that have the same name as human medications. i.e. Endep.

Are they the same as human drugs or are they specially prepared for animals and use the same names, which would also mean the same company makes them? I would think that maybe the doses maybe alot different too?

In my experience, we use some human medications on dogs (eg vallium). Where meds are developed specifically for the veterinary market they give them a different name (and a different price, and with different description sheets). But there may be times when the vet specifies the chemical name rather than the drug name given by the drug company. . . in which case human and dog meds with the same active ingredient will be called by the same drug name.

There are some drugs which are the same and some which aren't compatible. I would never substitute without checking first.

My dog is currently on Metacam. Very expensive as a dog medication but as a human medication (Mobic) much less so. I spoke to a vet pharmacologist to ensure that they were interchangable before I substituted.

I have also substituted the human antibiotic suspension for Clavulox (clavulanic acid/amoxicillin combination) for a dog. Buggered if I will pay so much for pet medications when I can give them the same thing for less. Those antibiotic tablets are unreasonably priced.

My vet also said it's OK to use the human type for SOME drugs e.g. Clavulox, Keflex and Metacam (Mobic). Dosage is similar for antibiotics for large dogs. I'd always check with my vet, first: "A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing.."
