Do All Breeds Come Into Season Ever 6- 8 Months?

Does the ANKC Code of Ethics reflect the difference with these dogs in relation to the frequencyof breeding them?

Don't seem to for Qld but why would they need to?

The rule about frequency of breeding for bitches states (in Qld):

I shall not breed from any bitch kept or owned by me causing it to whelp more than twice in eighteen months;

If the bitch only comes in season every 12 months, then surely you couldn't get her to have more than two litters in 18 months even if you wanted to. :worship:

Have I missed your point?

Nah, you haven't missed any point... it just occurred to me that the rule about breeding (I thought anyhow) was that they should be rested every other season.

That wasn't why I satrted the thread by the way, it was an afterthought.

Ah ok.

So why did you start the thread, tell me!?

Curiosity. Someone said to me that certain breeds of dogs only came into season once every 12 - 14 months but they didn't know which ones... so I asked. :worship:

Some lines of Australian Shepherds come in every 12 months or more.

I think dependent on lines in any breed you can have a great deal of difference in heat cycles and then mating potential times.

My 13 month cycling Australian Shepherd is mated at a much more "normal" time frame ie 14 - 20 days.

Most of my bitches are pretty good on being every 6 months however in saying that most cycle very quickly and are out of season by day 14 in there cycle.

I am sure other breeders have quirks in their backyards!!

The CC's may have used that as a reason for setting the rules but the renowned reproductive vets do not necessarily believe it is the best for the health of the bitch.

There is no need to rest a bitch after a litter , unless she has had a hard time and has not coped well with the pups, or has taken a long time to regain condition.

There are no hard and fast rules for any breed, with regards to their seasons. we have Pugs seasons ranging from every four months to every eight months. Even those who have cycled spot on every six months , have been known to change their mind after a litter or to hang out an extra couple of months for no reason.

The CC's may have used that as a reason for setting the rules but the renowned reproductive vets do not necessarily believe it is the best for the health of the bitch.

I have been given the advice of breed them young, breed successive litters and then desex your bitch.

I think it is an individual thing rather than a breed thing. I have had shelties that range from 4mths to 11mths. I much prefer the 9mths plus. Very hard to keep a decent coat when they are cycling every 4mths

Not only do Basenjis only come into season once a year, they all come in at the same time. Hence the "silly season" around Easter every year :happydance:

Wow! Why is that? Is that just the way they are genetically programmed?

Thanks for the responses so far!

I'll echo Emmala... why doe sthat happen I wonder??

They say that human females living together will eventually synchonise like that too but that certainly wasn't what I have experienced and yet many others have?

I only own one Basenji (Siberians are my first breed of choice) so don't know that I'm qualified to answer :)

I think it is just because they are such an untouched ancient breed. I have been told Dingos are the same, so there could be some truth in it.

Polarpeak is right.

Basenjis are a very ancient breed, in fact one of the oldest breeds on record, so we can only assume it has something to do with their original parentage as to why they only come in once a year.

Male basenjis also come into season at the same time as the girls. Believe me, if you own a male and a couple of females, living with basenjis in season time can be a nightmare. Many of us have to use ACP's to keep the males calm, and sadly its this time of year that many basenjis escape from their yard and have untimely deaths on the road. Even if the male basenji doesnt have an entire bitch living with him, he still knows when its season time.

The weather does play a part in a basenjis season, but I really cant say just how much. This year for example we had many bitches come in late, not have full season etc. We have also had many bitches miss this year as well. We all agree that the warmer than usual weather and lack of rain, is playing a part here.
