Staff'n'Toller
Ok so I have trained two of my other dogs (not Tollers) in Agility a few years back, they are now retired for various reasons. I am slowly training Geordie in Agility and have done a clicker foundations course, BUT I am finding it really hard to get to club every week plus obedience, plus my own instructing commitments at the moment. I will have access to courses in a few months at my Obed club but I have decided to do some training on my own until then. I have found that Geordie is very high drive and visually stimulated he is a real handful in close proximity with other dogs and being that we train inside there is only so *far away* that we can go. Also because he is so high drive I am having problems getting him to chill enough to concentrate! Obviously the adrenalin is pumping but it is a real problem with lead outs etc as he is all over the place. :D I think the environment just doesn't suit him, and as I have done some Agility before I think I can battle through for a while at home. So what is/are your fav instructional DVD's or resources? Why do you like them? I am looking at a subscription to the Leap Dog Agility Library and the Agility In Motion series at the moment..recommended to me. Are there any others you Agility trialers like? We really need to work on 2o2o contacts (we covered this heaps but he just doesnt get it ) he is verrry clicker savvy. Thanks! Mel. J...
Greg Derretts "Agility Foundation Training" DVD Susan Garretts "Success with One Jump" DVD & book "Shaping Success" Clean Run magazine Like Greg Derretts 1st DVD because it covers a lot of groundwork stuff that really clicked in once I got onto running courses, I think it made a huge difference! Susan Garretts for the same reason, but you're adding in the jump as the next step and taking it a lot further. Shaping Success because everytime I pick it up and read it I learn more stuff that I either missed last read or wasn't up to. Clean Run has some excellent exercises in it if you've got the equipment, especially their "specials" for things like weavers and contacts! Which reminds me, I need to renew my subscription for CR! bridgie_cat
I have only seen Greg Derrets agility foundation training and then the next one of his "great dog... shame about the handler" really enjoyed agility foundation training but possibly found it too late to make use of some of it and also would have a hard time getting Lana (or a lot of shelties I would think) to be so focused on a tug toy for lots of the exercises... but great how much proofing he does for each bit & really useful stuff that you would miss if you went straight to the equip. next one was good as it showed his handling system but after that it was a LOT of sequences to learn diff maneuvers so would have to watch it several times or in parts - ie train, and then watch the next bit etc... good - but also a bit beyond us atm as we are just getting back into it and learning weavers etc
kelpiechick
New Greg Derrett DVD is due out sometime this year For working on 2o2o you might also want to consider Julie Daniel's 'Contacts and Weaves' DVD - can't remember if that is the exact title and I am too lazy to go to the next room and check, sorry but it is available from Clean Run website and goes through detailed demonstrations with her teaching contacts on the A Frame and on dogwalk. She uses 'all 4 on' , later changing to quick release to simulate running contact rather than 2o2o but you could adapt it easily enough. If you are a clicker trainer you will love it as it has a section titled 'operant conditioning' which gives good suggestions for using a clicker in agility.
