If you wanted to kill the fleas ASAP, there's a tablet called Capstar made by same people as Sentinel Spectrum, which will kill all fleas on a dog in a 24 hour period. Most our clients by a 6 pack, and give their dogs a tablet every 2-3 days until finished. They're also helpful if you ever take dogs to dog parks - give dog tab before you get in the car for ride home, and won't be bringing fleas back with you. Usually helps eradicate most of the fleas present, but also a good topical product like Advantage will do the same.

can you please tell me where to get this capstar. i have had my BC for a year now, and i can't for the life of me get rid of her fleas. i was going to post a new comment, but i will just add to this, as i also had another question. we just moved house, to a house with a pool and virtually no dirt, it is all grass and pebbles. i washed her the other day in her usual oatmeal shampoo, but for some reason this time after she dried off, the next day i noticed dandruf. her skin was flaking mainly around her back/bum area, but still it is all over. can i get a suggestion on a good shampoo and conditioner for her? and it seems that advantage is the way to go with fleas, i really would like to get rid of these pesky little buggers, i will try advantage. just to let you know, i have bathed her previously in malwash, it worked for a day but then straight back on her, also i have a diluted solution of permetheran, which i use, but again doesn't seem to work, she seems to be a flea breeding cycle frown.gif

thanks for all this quality advice.

Bret

Advantage kills fleas, flea eggs, flea larvae, and forms crystals which will fall off in the dogs environment and kill the fleas in the surrounds also.

But to be effective you have to treat every pet in the household, and also won't be as effective if you have roaming cats coming into your yard.

Hope this helps!

i believe capstar only works when the fleas actually bite the dog because the Capstar puts a flea poison in the dogs blood.

personally i dont like the idea of putting a poison in the dogs blood.

You can get Capstar from any vet - its a product you can buy off the shelf.

Also, if your BC has flaky skin then I would lay off some of the harsher on the skin washes like Malawash and Permethrin as you might find they are drying her skin out and causing problems. I had the same problem once with George when I used Permoxin him - he got really dried out skin and it drove him nuts. Great product - just wrong for my boy.

You could try Aloveen shampoo & conditioner if you aren't already. Its an oatmeal shampoo so will soothe the skin and the conditioner is leave in so really easy to use.

Best of luck!

Capstar is also sold in supermarkets under the Excelpet lable. Probably at half the price the vets will charge.LOL

I have found these ones are not as good - try a pet supply store if you don't want to go to a vet clinic.

I'm not actually in need of any. I didn't know there was a difference. What is the brand the vets sell?

I wonder what the difference in ingredients is.

The Exelpet ones at supermarkets are different (I dont know why they are able to have the same name?) They are in a red packet, and the ones that Vets sell are in a pale blue packet. Supermarket ones used to be around $11 & the Vet ones $20 in my area for the same size. Coles/Bilo used to have them, but havent had any for over 12 months. The same goes for the local pet shop here, they no longer deal with the exelpet ones for some reason.

I don't think there is a hell of a lot of difference if any in this exelpet product. Maybe I just got a dud packet  I dunno but I didn't find them as effective as the Capstar brand by Novartis. Just my experience & preference really.

One of the spot-on products put on monthly should kill the fleas. I got a freebie of Frontline from the vet and it didn't work, however. Used Advantix after that with no problems. Tried Capstar but it's only a short-term solution and fleas came back. pricelesspets.com.au have good prices. Sorry, no experience with Advantage, but plenty of others use it. One of these longer-acting products is certainly the way to go  .

Treat all dogs in the house, wash bedding etc. Vacuum any carpets daily for while also, then put some insecticide in the bag so nothing breeds in there.

I'm not keen on the washes as they've got to be harsh to kill fleas and will worsen any skin problems.

Hi everyone

thanks heaps for all of your feedback, i recieved my vials of advantage today. according to the package, it starts working on adult fleas within 20 minutes of application, killing them that come into contact. what can i expect to see as results, do the flea eggs that have been steralised fall out? do the fleas fall out, ie: i have seen some jump or fall off her coat when i am patting her, then jump straight back on again? also, she hates the flea brush i have, i think that it is too touch on her skin when it goes through her coat, but i have another brush that does a good job of brushing her coat. the last question i have here is, she seems to be shedding an aweful lot of fur, more than usual, can i attribute that to a season change? do i brush her every day to get the loose hair out? any tips on how often a brush is in order?

thanks heaps for all your advice.

I had fleas on our 5 month old standard poodle, twice, before Advantix'ing them. I don't remember seeing any flea eggs, dead fleas etc., but he stopped scratching  .

I'm not sure what kind of brush is good for BCs  .

I use a slicker brush on both poodles (don't shed), plus my sister's RidgebackXStaffy pound dog (sheds+). Great for getting rid of dead hair on my sister's dog- amazing how much fur comes off him and he seems to like being brushed too

If you do get a slicker, make sure it's labelled "SOFT" or you might hurt your dog e.g. http://www.petnetwork.com.au/cgi-bin/shopp...;cart_id=614288

Ok I am looking at the packets of the excelpet capstar and the other one which came from a vet and is more expensive

1. both are made by Novartis...excelpet is a registered trademark of novartis.

2. for both tablets contain 57 mg nitenpyram each. for large dogs weighing between 11.1 - 57kg.

it is a marketing exercise. ppl who buy their pet supplies from a supermarket are seen as less willing to pay a higher price than those who purchase the same supplies from a vet or specialist supplier

cheers

If your dog has picked up the odd flea from somewhere then Capstars will be sufficient. If you have a persistent flea problem you need to break the fleas breeding cycle and also treat the environment (if you have fleas in your yard this is a nighmare) A longer acting product (frontline, Advantage, advantix)- probably in combination with (sentinel spectrum or one of the others that kills eggs). If your dog is being reinfested from its environment it could take 6 months of persistent effort to get rid of the fleas and the use of chemicals in the house and yard as well as treating any animals you have.
