franklin kcs
Hi All My pup a King Charles Spaniel by the name of Franklin is a 7mth Tri Colour who i love! Looking to chat about health issues of the King Charles and behaviours with other owners of them on this forum. Franklin is a cheeky buy who has developed skin allerigies... if anyone has similar problems with this breed please let me know if you found out what it is... Also, when given the kennel cough vaccination he developed kennel cough! only 1 in 10000 apparently! So he is a bit of an allergy dog! Feedback from other owners of this breed would be great. Georgie-boy
Hi Peta! Welcome to DOL. I don't know anyone on DOL who have King Charles Spaniels but there are quite a few of us on here who own Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. I myself have 2 - a black & tan boy and a tricolour girl. There is a thread in photos. My boy has skin problems too so I feel your pain. Can be frustrating trying to understand and control them but I think we are finally getting there after trying many things. I will not put my kids on steriods or unnecessary medication so have been changing diet, environment, shampoo etc. I love the name Franklin by the way - very sweet. Look forward to chatting with you more. :D Edited May 26, 2007 by Georgie-boy
Ashka
King Charles Spaniels are similar to Cavaliers but have squashed faces and tend to be smaller. They may snore more but that's debatable some nights with my boy. My Cavalier is a 4½ year old boy, love him to bits and he lives with DH & me in our Motor home traveling around NZ. (We are now retired) Feed the best food possible, bi products, generic meats, colours, preservatives etc can and usually do cause eye staining and allergy problems. High grain content food is great for chickens not dogs ....... I home cook his meals but make sure they are balanced via a dog nutrition spreadsheet and use sites like http://www.nutritiondata.com/index.html to check. I also have ZiwiPeak food and treats on hand. Cavaliers can have heart problems so please keep slim & fit. Use a small food dish :D As they are spaniels, long walks, fetching sticks from streams, swimming and running on beaches keeps them tired & well behaved They are not just soft, beautiful lap dogs. Obedience training is always a good idea and they learn quickly. Quite a few do agility and enjoy it as do their owners. They are people dogs, if you have to leave a Cavalier alone during the work day get two or at least a cat to keep the him company. They are not outside kennel dogs. A snood is a necessity to keep their ears out of their food and NO coat trimming is allowed for showing. I use a good metal comb and run it through his coat & ears most days ~ I don't use a brush except for a quick tidy up before going into the show ring. A crate is worth is weight in gold, great as their safe place inside the house and tied down in the car when going out. That's all I can think of at the moment, hope it helps. vanessa0305
From your other post I can see Franklin is a Cavalier, there are plenty of Cavy owners here and we would be happy to give advice if we can!! Good advice from Ashka and don't forget to come see us in the photo section as there are lots of photos of our cavs and we would love to see photos of Franklin! Gretel
Do we know yet which breed Franklin is? A friend had a Charlie (King Charles) with shocking skin. It turned out he was allergic to just about everything :D He lived on turkey and cortisone to keep him comfortable. Cavaliers and King Charles have quite different temperaments. I always said I would train a Charlie for obedience until I got to know them - I don't want that much of a challenge! Oh okay I just read your post in the other thread and see that Franklin is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Edited May 26, 2007 by Gretel
franklin kcs
Hi All Thank you so much for this! Its fantastic! I didnt realise there was a difference between cav's and a king charles? Can you please tell me more about the difference between the two? I was told he was a cavalier when i bought him and he does seem smaller than most others i have seen, but that could be his age? He does snore though! Also, can you please tell me how to find your thread on Cavalier's? Cheers Peta
Gretel
Hi Peta, If you go to the breeds section of this site you can look at some breed profiles of King Charles Spaniels http://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/profil...les-spaniel.asp They are very different to Cavaliers in the head. Some Cavaliers are smaller than others. The standard is 5.5kilos to 8.1 so that allows for a fair variation. Many pet Cavaliers tend to be quite large and well over the breed standard. Maybe you have seem more of the bigger ones? Did you buy Franklin from a breeder and get his registration? That will leave you in no doubt as to his breed If you go to the photos section there is a heap of Cavalier photos members have put up.
