Jean26
Hi. I ws told that it coule be a diet problem and/or a behavioural problem. The pup may not be getting enough nutrients from his food and eating his poo (or the poo of other animals like cats) and from this if can develop into a yucky habit. Maybe re-asses the pup's diet and clean up poo as soon as you see it. That's all i can come up with, hope it helps!

tryamartimmy
I've heard that wild dogs used to do this to cover up their tracks way back when. Not sure if it's true or not, but if the dog is prone to being nervous, it might contribute?
kamuzz
If you do an internet search on coprophagia you will find a lot of info that might be helpful. Here is one site that was interesting
Kharn
Hi, When our rescue pup first came to us, he also did this. I think it was a change of diet, habit from being a pound puppy and stress from moving to his new home. We did a number of things and within a few weeks the behaviour had stopped. * We called him away after he did his business and gave him a treat. * We made sure we picked up the dogs mess everyday (he seemed to prefer it fresh). * Lastly we added pineapple juice to his food. Good luck and don't worry about it too much, I know its pretty
luvabull
When Chopper was a pup he did that too but he eventually grew out of it.Like Kharn said though,it really helps when you give them a treat right away after they poo.A treat they really love!!They'll soon realize the treats taste much better than their own poo
Isabel964
My dogs eat cat poo out of the litter tray from time to time. It grosses me out! I used to have crytal litter which I liked - it was very effective. But now I have organic natural stuff - purely for the reason there is a chance one of the dogs may decide to eat from there. Gross!!!

Kharn
It was a tip I was given. I think it helps with digestion of the protien (thats usually what is so inviting about poo) and also makes the poo less appitising. It worked for us, but may not work for everyone. You can get other additives from your vet I think, which basically make the poo taste bad. For us, it was worth a try, a cheap easy solution and it worked. ETA spelling... sas
Hey i recently got a puppy from yagoona dog shelter and he has a nasty habbit of eating his poo ???? can anyone tell me if this is a behaviour thing ? or if this is a diet problem ? i am really concerned .... Nasty to you, completely natural for dogs. In domesticated dogs you see this happen for reasons such as the mother didn't keep her whelping area clean or the human didn't keep the whelping area clean. You can combat this if it bothers you, simply distract the dog with a treat and give it praise.
Rottsaroundtheclock
SAS....I kept my whelping areas clean. And yet I still ended with two generations of poo eaters. *sigh* Although they DID grow out of it when they hit about 8mths of age. It seemed very specific. And interestingly their father/grandfathers brother was a poo eating puppy. I don't know if he was, I got him when he was 5mths old and never saw him eat it or smelt it on his breath. I just shrug my shoulders now, pick up poo as soon as it's done and worm regularly! PS....These dogs were all on raw diet, when they were eating poo too. Kharn
Glad to hear its working out for you. :D I'm just wondering how a puppy would look drinking his pee whilst peeing?
pencilnibbler
my little jelly doesnt eat her own poo, but shes certainly got a thing for the cat's! its not so much a problem when inside, as im pretty vigilant about the litter box (which is now in our ensuite - a puppy no go zone), but when she finds some outside she's in heaven!! it only seems to be cat poo, too. we also have ferrets and is completely unintersted in their parcels. one of the vets i used to work with owned a doberman who was a major poo-eater, and she loved when she brought home baby kittens to rear because what happens when you lick their butts? yep poo!!!
