superminty Posted May 13, 2007 Share Posted May 13, 2007 Just a little brag for me. On Saturday Cash got his HT title and today, Minty got her HSA! I was stunned as in one run we lost the sheep at the pen and had to pick them up again and have another go. I thought it would've been a fail but the judge said you can have two tries at each obstacle and because I closed the gate and started again, we were ok. Yahoo! We all had a few dramas with the sheep today, they were quite light but also stubborn and took a few dogs on. It made for some interesting runs. As for Cash - well, I'm not sure ANKC herding is his thing but we'll see how he goes. Him I may video - he is mighty pretty after all Kelpiechick - go the 600 dogs! Just ANKC or three sheep too?Cheers Oh I certainly have the bug - went out and got myself a working kelpie, didn't I I love the sport but will be concentrating on working and trialling my kelpie from now on - he was bred for this after all. I'd like to get into yard and utility trials with him to get more experience - I think it's working dogs for me from now on As for Minty, she's really not that interested in working, she performs well on the day but switches off with too much training - training that would be needed to get her to the next level. We did our first yard and utility trial at Easter and I loved every moment of it - the sheep were OK but my language about the gates probably left a lot to be desired. Kelpie-i Posted May 15, 2007 Share Posted May 15, 2007 (edited) Jesomil, the Port Albert trials are held during Easter each year. Port Albert is about half hour drive from Welshpool. You can either "rough it out" by camping on the grounds or you can book a motel in Welshpool (but you need to book in early). The sheep used for those trials are wild sheep (taken from the hills nearby). They only see dogs and humans once a year and are absolute bastards. Most "dogged" sheep follow humans as you know, these ones give you a wide berth as well as the dog. They kick and charge at the dogs constantly and we saw many a good dog shut down during the trials. We entered our Beloka girl into the Puppies event (of all things) and boy did she get battered. Lucky for us (and her) she came away un-scathed and still willing to work sheep. Given that I now have a very forceful young lad, who has quite a presence on sheep, I think I may give him a go next year. I'm not sure where to find the info....it's just something that Paul McPhail told us about a few years ago and we decided to go. Didn't get there this year though.
