How To Stop Night Time Poos And Pees?

G,day all ,

We have 2 bueatiful Irish setters, who both sleep in thier beds in our garage, and when we are home are in the house. They get walked /run at least 3 times a day. The bitch was 6 months old when we got her and has never been any problem, shes now 15 months.

The other one is a 5 1/2 month old dog,who weve had since 8 weeks old. Every night we still leave newspaper in a place in the garage which he pees on still. He also poos too most nights, even though they both go for a walk before we go to bed.

What can i do to stop this? often on his night walks he only pees but not poos,so you can gaurantee a present in the garage next morning? It seems to have become his normal cycle and is getting annoying now. Weve had setters before so know the breed but cant ever remember one taking this long to keep it all in at night.

Thanks in advance.

Move the paper outside put it on the ground outside where you want him to do his wees and poohs and see what happens(don't leave any inside)...My guess is that if you leave paper at the same spot every night, that you are putting him into the habit of doing is business there at night.

Hi

Just a couple suggestions for you, if possible feed your dogs no later than 4pm, that gives plenty of times for diggestion before you retire for the night, they should be empty by then. LOL.

The next step is to take the newspaper away as per the previous post by Mu Shu.

If the problem continues get a crate and lock them up, it is very efficient, you would amazed, they will not do their business in their bed, and they are old enough now to have control, so a crate and lock "em up. LOL

Guest Pandii

I am with the feed earlier too, I had a rotti that did this without fail every night, then the others would pee over hers

All fixed by feeding earlier in the day, cleaning the area very well and removing any newspaper that I was leaving down,

Keep walking them at night to help move things along too

Good Luck

Thanks for the advice all.

Unfortunately I cant leave them outside acces from the garage at night as it has to be locked up.

The idea about feeding them earlier is a good one. They currently get fed between 6 and 7 at night, and thier last walk is usually around 9. ANy later and they are already aslleep in the living room and dont want to go out!

Ive never thought about a crate. As i said the bitch is fine, its just the young one.

Will try giving them last meal around 5 from now on and see how he goes.

I have removed the paper before and he still pees in that spot!

Just to clarify, they get 2 main meals a day.

The last one we cant do earlier than 5ish because of the funny shifts the wife and i both work, as they are on thier own from about 2 to 5 every day.

Another thing with setters (at least until they are 2 or 3),never leave anything valuable to you or dangerous to them within thier reach when left alone,as they will chew it to bits for sure!.

" They get walked /run at least 3 times a day."

Do they not have free access outside during the day ??

Leaving the paper down is just encouraging the pup to toilet. It has been trained to use the paper & its still being used so to the dog it means toilet there its totally acceptable.

As said, I think this has become a habit which you need to break. Crating is good. Dogs generally wont go the to toilet where they sleep (unless they're busting). Remove the paper and clean the spot as Mu-Shu said and see what happens. Or prior to putting them to bed put the paper outside and stand outside with them for a few minutes and see if your pup goes on the paper outside. I use "toilet" and my dogs know what that means and go before coming inside of a night. But you need to show your puppy where you want it to go as at the moment it thinks it is doing the right thing by going on the paper in the garage. If your pup goes outside praise and then you can gradually remove the paper all together.

Good luck :)

The dogs are put out our backyard when we are there, but as I said they live inside and love the living room, run of house really. They never do anything in the house, its just the pup still doing it in the garage at night. ill give the vinegar a go too.

Thay love to run around the backyard, which is big,but as the house is new, the yard is mostly mulch and small natives, still being established. If i left them out back for hours all the young trees will be flattened! Thats the thing with having 2, they roll about playing and flatten evrything by saccident, but thats another thing Im trying to stop (its not thier fault). Once the young trees are big enough they will be fine,Im just trying to save them the fate of flattening by mad red setters.

You need to get rid of the smell in the garage. Dog's smell is far better than ours, of course, and he can still smell the "spot".

Will he poo on the paper outside? Praise/ treat like mad if he "performs" outdoors on or off paper. Use a word you feel comfortable with e.g. "toilet", "poo" etc. Our pup got to know what "wee wee" meant and would look at me- just as he started to go- waiting for a "Good dog!" . He had his human trained.

Hopefully, the earlier feeding will make poo'ing on command unnecessary.

maybe just give them 1 feed a day in the morning for a while  Setters are not big breeds and willdo fine on 1 meal a day thats bigger.

I would also recommend a crate im sure it would take too long to break the habit if he is toilet trained to use a specific spot and not go in the house, he just assumes that thats his toilet.....im 100% sure he could hold all night if he wanted/was made too.

My 2 are now almost too reliable - they wont pee on the deck only on grass (we moved several times since we got them) and are shut on the deck during the day - if im late home or am gone over night they do the BIGGEST pees when i let the out!! i have no problem with them going on the deck ??!! but they still hold it :mad

As others have said you have to control the eating and drinking. If the dog gets into a routine the guts will empty pretty much on time.

Also any accidents in the house have to be cleaned properly so no trace is left.

Is the boy desexed???

Boys can tend to start marking and if that happens, crating at night is the best idea, and you seriously have to bleach/scrub when he does pee since he will remark same spots if thats a problem

  • 2 months later...

Just an update on the situation. We tried everything but the dog would still poo/pee in the garage when left in there(didnt get crates thats all)

. Funnily we NEVER caught him in the act!

We decided to bite the bullett and leave the dogs sleep on thier bean bags in the living room when we were in bed or out. To date they have only got hold of a dvd cover and chewed it up,but the good news is they have NEVER done any poo or pees,as they never did before but leaving them there unattended was a big call I suppose. We are careful as we can not to leave them anything lying around to chew on,but to date they mostly sleep as far as i can tell.(they are always on the bean bags when we get up or come home).

The longest they are not put out is about 9 hours overnight and the dog (now nearly 8 months) has a hell of a long pee in the morning! but just shows he can hold it in all that time anyway.
