Does it dry on her ear or will it be sticky?

Hey guys! Sorry to bring back an old thread! Lana (my sheltie) came from her breeder at 9 1/2 months old with chewing gum attached to her ears to weigh them down > it worked but now it has fallen off the ears have just popped back up again! LOL... doesnt really matter since i wont be showing her and she is still just as cute > but i was just wondering ... if i did want to do something about it > is 11 months too old? I assume she must not have had the gum on as a baby since it hasnt worked very well...

Is straight course like what the greyhounds run on?... with the rabbit? I have seen what i think was lure coursing on TV with a little lure on the ground that got dragged over like a zig-sag track in a field... is this right? I dont live in melb but i would love to know more about it for my aunties whippet (do they do lure coursing with whippets?) Thanks Bridget

hey sv I wouldnt worry too much, i got Lana at 9 months from her breeder in a similar situation and she is settled in very well now (initially a bit scatty but really quick to get over it.) However i have heard that you can make them more comfortable in their new home by sending a blanket or familiar item with them that has your scent... may just get him more settled at first... Are there other dogs where he is going? If he is used to having a buddy this could also help...

this is probably a dumb question.... but what is shutzhund training?
-
Thanks for the pretty pic Hesapandabear! Lana's dad looks a lot like that but with a white ring all around his neck... He is profiled on dogzonline under the name Islewind black label. And i think he comes from a longish line of B/W shelties in Canada.

LOL > is that even a pure bred sheltie anymore?... at my aunties dog park there is a sheltie x rough collie and it is very nice... does she breed for showing or for agility?
-
Wow that is a big sheltie! > Lana is about 37-38cm... Is that your dog in the picture? He is very pretty! I only feed Lana necks and wings also, as this is what the breeder gave her... lamb offcuts etc > but the dogs on her dads side would have been much taller (american standard is 16").
-
Thanks for the advice > Lana is a 10 month old sheltie > not sure if that counts as a pup anymore or not... How do you build relationship and trust? > I am going to start the triangle of temptation for her focus as was recomended on another forum!
-
Hey! It is me and Lana again! We are starting doggy school tommorow (very excited ) > she already knows sit, drop and roll over Anyway > i have been hearing people mention different base training for different outcomes. I really want to do agility with Lana and i was hoping that some of the agility experts could come and give me some advice as to what i should start doing with her to end up with best agility doggy possible! > any little tricks you use to get focus and any way to train drive?! I figure if i start doing it right now > it will save me a lot of trouble when we actually get to doing the tricky stuff! Any advice would be wonderful!

Troysmum > do you know what breeder her shelties are from?

Is B/W bad?... My Lana's dad was B/W and he looks really cool! Not sure how these dogs do in the show ring but I love them!
-
YES! second day i had Lana she did the biggest burp! It was hilarious! I have never heard a dog burp before!
-
Thanks for the opinions guys. I didnt think it would be the chicken > > it was just a random thought.
-
LOL! wow that is a big sheltie!
-
I think the standard for girls is around 14" but in the states it is set at 16" for shelties... so it is very possible that some of the dogs on her dads side could have been taller. I havnt desexed her yet > i only got her a couple weeks ago. I know that this overgrown thing happens a bit with shelties >< also shelties that are too small. It could just be a throwback... not sure
-
Im not sure i have mentioned this yet but the breeder that i got my new sheltie Lana from was getting rid of her because she got too big. (she is about 15 1/4" > quite a bit bigger than the other shelties at doggy school ) Anyway > this doesnt matter to me because im not planning on showing her > she is a pet. Both of her parents are normal sized (although dad is a canadian imp. > still smaller though - 14 1/2") Her breeder fed her on mostly chicken and i am still feeding her on a lot of chicken > but i was thinking today about all of the growth hormones that go into chickens! Is it possible that a puppy fed on this will grow bigger than usual? I know that you can give people growth hormones while they are still growing to make them taller... could this be the case in dogs? Anyway > just an interesting thought... what are your opinions?

Hi My name is Bridget and im really new to this whole forum thing but i hope someone can answer my question. I am looking at buying a girl shetland sheepdog and she sounds like almost the perfect dog for me accept that she is not house trained yet and already 9 months old. Is this a problem? Is it harder to house train an adult dog than a puppy? Is there a different method i should use to house train her? Is it possible she will never be as well house trained as a dog that had started house training as a puppy?
