  1. Is this sheep dog guy just that good that it doesnt matter which pup he gets... so he just takes whatever is left over after everyone else picks? jokes... I think the mischeivous ones will get picked also ... so that leaves the quiet pups... = softer nature thus easier to train? but that doesnt make sense when working sheep cuz it has to be tough... oooohhh - submissive?! thus will work to his comand better?! lol - sorry I have no idea when it comes to the dif drives ... can you tell?
  2. I feed Lana dry food in the morning (thinking this has important stuff she wont get from meat alone...) and then meat at night (usually chicken necks, wings or diff cuts of red meat some nights... and she also gets eggs or whatever else I feel like throwing together instead of meat on the odd night to give a bit of variety... lol...
  3. but what if we need to change this response - some situations cannot be avoided... or maybe we dont want to have to avoid them. I agree that it is the owners fault for putting them there - but once it has happened I would still tell the dog they did wrong so they didnt think it was an acceptable behaviour... eg if Lana snapped at a child because I let them get too close - I would still tell her off - she doesnt know that it was MY job to stop the kid from being there - she should know it is NOT ok to do that... hope that made sense lol
  4. read the back of the food packs for recommended amounts and then feed a bit less to get him losing weight. Im not great on actual amounts but you can bulk out the meal with rice or some vegies. Start a diet and then try it for a week or 2 and see if he loses any weight - if he does and it is a balanced diet - continue... if not you need to reduce the amt of food or replace with something with less calories like the rice etc... Goodluck!
  5. maybe work on teaching him what he can and cannot chew? I would assume this is a NO for chewing the funiture and then present him with a Kong or chew toy of some sort and GOOD BOY... good tasting chew stuff would also be an extra reward for chewing the correct toy. Store his toys in a bag with dried liver or get a Kong so you can put stuff in it. I dont know how to stop digging... but im sure that has been done lots so I would do a search in the training section.
  6. oh no! im so sorry for your loss. RIP Bob
  7. GO THE SHELTIE!!! and get them the same colour if you can and then try to pass of the sheltie as a the big ones puppy all its life!!!! or another rough... I do think two of the same is fun... means they would have similar athletic ability and probably enjoy the same sort of games Im not sure if it is the same with dogs - but with cats if you get two from the same litter then they stay best friends/inseperable and I like to see this sort of bond between pets :D
  8. I feed dry in the morning and meat in the arvo... about 1/2C dry and 3-4 chicken necks worth of meat...
  9. We used to feed raw mixed with milk to the cats and dogs just randomly (no set amt each week...) but recently I have just been feeding Lana the yolk.
  10. well atm Lana is getting about 1 cup dry food and equivalent of 5 necks per day (i swap the sort of chicken/type of meat around...) but this is making her fat so we are starting a diet! lol... doesnt help that she uses her cuteness to beg food off my family!
  11. Hello Bridged! Almost the same name... im Bridget... Havnt met a Bridged before - Bridgid but not Bridged. Just wanted to say hi! LOL... sounds like you are getting lots of good advice on the lead training anyways.
  12. so true! My aunts whippet cannot roll over to save herself > which, as my brother said "is hard when your shaped like a potato wedge" LOL
  13. Thanks for all the replies! Erny - method you are describing sounds like maybe what she was going for I am not keen on this instructor anyway > seems to have lost the plot as far as fun goes... deffers said to FORCE mouth to stay closed causing Lana much stress... I may try similar at home just without mean lady watching and telling me what to do! Lana is good at taking the bit of wood anyway so i dont think it will be too hard > i was just annoyed that the instructor made the experience so unpleasant.
  14. I just got lana to drop... circled hand in front of face (signal for roll over) saying roll over and then if she dropped onto her side GREAT if not i helped then i helped her over and lots of praise > less and less help each time...
  15. Hey guys! At dog school this morning we were introduced to the dumbell and the lady teaching told us to "force" it into the dogs mouth, force the mouth closed... count to 5 and then say give and let it out again... Is this how anyone else learned this skill??... it seems like it is against every basic dog training rule I know! Training is meant to be fun! I think that forcing lana to take the dumbell is just gonna make her hate it! Would love to hear opinions on this one > whether you guys agree with me or if some have had success with this technique. Also alternative methods would be good to hear! I figure if I teach her a diff way before i get the instructor back then i wont be made to do it her way!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks BC
  16. Im at about the same spot as you with Lana > I am planning to do both. I figure if i am at a comp I may as well enter in everything I can. Im not sure how bigger ones work but down here agility, obedience and jumping are all run at the same place on the same day etc... i think she will listen to me more in the other stuff if she is v obedient anyways ...
  17. You should deffers get him desexed if you have entire females in the house! Why have your other dogs not been desexed? Have you thought about it? Any reason not to? Btw welcome to DOL! As it is a pup it should get along fine as long as you introduce it to the cat and other dogs in a calm and controled environment Pups love to chew so you will need to provide it with nice chew toys if you dont want to lose you shoes and other stuff! Not sure on specific grooming but deffers get it used to being brushed as a pup as it will make it LOTS easier when he is older Start collar and lead training young so it gets used to them early! cat collars work nicely on little pups hope this helps with some of your questions you will get lots more help from the guys on here!
  18. Raw Chicken wings???... I feed these to Lana occasionally and havent had a prob... Egg white uncooked is bad but egg yolk is ok? is that how it works?
  19. mommy says chocolates not good for dogs... ETA - maybe they could have the rest of your milk...
  20. Even though Lana LOVED herding the one time we have tried it... not too many training options down here! (Thank god she hasnt worked out that our neighbours have sheep otherwise she may have found her own solution!!!) Does anyone keep runner ducks to train with their dogs? I am looking into it... but im just not sure it is worth it if im going to uni in a couple of years!
  21. Do you only need to sunscreen the areas that do not have fur? Lana has a little pink spot a bit further up her nose... I guess half way up the flat plane of her nose... Does this bit need sunscreen?
  22. I guess we like agility and the little bit of herding we tried was FANTASTIC... really whatever she has fun with... Favourite trick atm (the only cool one we know!) is jumping through my arms!... What is doggie freestyle? from what I am reading i am guessing it is tricks timed to music??... is that about right?
  23. Did it get rescheduled? I am still keen to hear how they go when you eventually do the test!
  24. I think $15 (student rate) registration or something and then $2 groundfees each training i go to.
  25. Been training with Lana since i got her... so that is about 2 and a bit months > we are in grade 2
