If she's swallowing (or trying to!) chicken necks whole, it's because they're too small. Try bigger pieces - like half a frame/carcass, a thigh or a wing. Mince is never a good option for dogs with teeth - the result is decay, eventually. Dogs need bones to clean & exercise their teeth, gums, jaw & neck muscles. My old fella Zoom who has only about 6 or so teeth left gets minced chicken carcasses for the bone content. He also eats chunks of meat, liver, other offal and does "suck" on a bone :D occasionally. The rest of my pack get meaty meat chunks and meaty bones, but not mince. Sonia

Dog Sucking In Air Forcefully?
Hafhafa Hounds replied to lanabanana's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Mmm, sounds like a reverse sneeze. I have an old dog here who's done it all her life. Can be to do with lengthened soft palate or sucking in some dust. Sally's 16 and hasn't had any issues that have come of it. Sonia -
Hi Mel, My dogs eat raw based on the Franken-prey diet. So, I "make up" large quantities of meat/bones/offal into portions to feed 6 dogs once or twice a month. Freeze, defrost & serve. No cooking... Sonia

No pix?? Doesn't happen often here. It's a dominance thing with mine for sure (unless there's a bitch in season, like now! and then Thomas air humps the day away!!) Sonia

Dry Food Questions Please Help
Hafhafa Hounds replied to glenncol's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
When my dog had food allergies, her feet & eyes were the main itchy areas. She bit at her feet & legs and her eyes weeped endlessly. I changed to 100% raw meaty meat, raw meaty bones and raw offal - and guess what? No more itching... http://www.rawlearning.com Make the change - your dog will thank you for it. Sonia -
Poppydog, your Poppy dog is really cute! Sonia

What about camping? I realise it's a step down from a caravan or cabin - but it can be great fun - and you'd be warm with the dogs to snuggle in your tent!! Sonia

I have a dog that's eaten lots of chocolate (ALL STOLEN!! GRR!) in her life. Never had issues, but it did scare the life outta me. I am VERY paranoid about it now. I think it's one of those things that affects each individual animal differently. If you're not comfortable taking him/her to the on-call or emergency vet, I guess you could "wait and see"... but that approach is of course fraught with the possibility that he/she may get very ill. For future reference I have found that Lectric Soda crystals (bought from a supermarket and stored in airtight container in the fridge) work very well to make a dog throw up when it has eaten stolen goods. This method was used by a vet I visited when Sally had eaten rat poison and was extremely effective. All you do is keep feeding crystals (same as you feed a dog a tablet) every minute or so until you get a result. It's very quick and far less distressing than using salty water or peroxide liquid, I think. Here's some information about chocolate toxicity & the symptoms. https://www.vetconnect.com.au/5min/data/04400441.htm Hope he's/she's ok. Sonia

Chicken Mince From Leonards Chicken
Hafhafa Hounds replied to a topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I think it depends on the individual Lenards franchise as to how fresh / handling / contamination etc. I bought from the Swan Hill VIC Lenards from it's opening to 2008 (when I moved to SA). I was *always* happy and got decent prices - I had a standing order each month for 5 - 6 dogs, plus ppl food! On the other hand, I was less than impressed with purchases I made at a particular SA Lenards at times. Sometimes ok, sometimes not. I buy boxes of frames through my local butcher now for $9.50 for a 12 - 13 kilo box. My dog food order thru him is around $120 a month, so he gives me a pretty good deal. Sonia -
Monthly Expenses For Larger Breeds...
Hafhafa Hounds replied to Nadine83's topic in General Dog Discussion
With 3 Rottweilers (and 1 pug) I just don't want to know what they cost either. mmmm, me neither - I have 2 Tenterfield Terriers, 1 JRTX, 2 Salukis and a Kelpie. This past month has seen me spend near on $1000 at the vet, but that's a VERY unusual month for us! Sonia -

Food Intolerance And Elimination Diets
Hafhafa Hounds replied to peigirl's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
This is kind of steering your topic in a different direction, but have you thought about not feeding your dog veggies? Dogs truly don't *need* them and do very well on a diet based on (raw) meaty meat, meaty bones and offal. Afterall, they are carnivores... You could try http://www.rawlearning.com/ for more information. Eliminating veg from their diet may almost certainly solve the problem, if they are indeed allergic/intolerant of veg "proteins". Advice For Helping Puppy Recover From Dog Attack
Hafhafa Hounds replied to thommomac's topic in General Dog Discussion
Firstly, very very sorry to hear this - happens too often. My father in law was walking his little dog 3 years ago, when a larger Dane-X attacked. Abby was very lucky to survive, but still carries the scars to this day. My father-in-law had the first of a series of strokes shortly after that incident and passed on about 12 months later. So, to answer your questions. YES, report the attack to the ranger. Insist on follow up and follow up if you don't hear back. A dog at the vet for emergency surgery is rarely (if ever) the result of *playing* with another dog, no matter what the size difference. Is it fair that these people continue to let their dog play unleashed, given the unsocial behaviour it has exhibited? These are not responsible pet owners and need to be held accountable, regardless of their personal situation. Abby was generally fairly outgoing, but is much less responsive to other dogs she doesn't know after the attack. it doesn't help that my FIL became ill and could no longer walk her afterwards, so she missed out on getting back out there to socialise. Playing at the dog park needs to be your call. Personally, Abby isn't walked in the street anymore - she was attacked only 7 or 8 houses down the road from where she still lives. She is an older dog now, so missing her walks isn't that big an issue as far as exercise goes, but socially it's not helping. Having been attacked with my own dogs always makes me rethink going to the beach for several weeks, but then I get back out there, because the dogs need the exercise & stimulation and because my dogs (that I walk at the beach) are big (& Salukis can outrun *any* other dog that tries to get them). I don't walk my little dogs out in public. Too scared of dog attacks!! Reintroduce your dog to dogs you know are safe. Have play dates with friends' dogs and join an obedience school (dog attacks can still happen there, but are generally less likely). Again, seeing/playing with the Staffy has to be your call. I think that's a "let's see what happens" but keep them onlead scenario. It sounds like pack mentality kicked in, but would you truly be comfortable seeing your dog romp with that particular dog again, given what happened? I wish Sid (& you!) all the best for your recovery. Sonia -
I bought Weatherbeeta Buddy coats which I had embroidered with my kennel name. ETA: This is Moss the supermodel!
