  1. ... and I have to be silly and add this one: This is ZOOMIE (yep, that's his name!!) Sonia :D
  2. Moss (grizzle) & Arella (blondie) - zoomies on the beach. Sonia
  3. Luna (Dally) & Tom (JRT-X) zooming on the beach. Luna is not mine, but she visits us regularly. Tom we rescued from death row about 8 years ago. He's now around 13 years old. Sonia
  4. Ditto... I love mine. My Saluki bitch has hair coming from everywhere for most of the year. My pink ZG keeps it under a little bit of control. She's my worst shedder, but the rest of them shed too. For most of the year... Zoom Grooms are not the cheapest option, but I was lucky enough to "win" mine at a silent auction at a dog show. I got it for $6.00. They retails for around $20 - 30. Sonia
  5. Salukis - sight takes greater importance during the chase (sighthounds, afterall), but I watch them scenting the air as we walk along the edge of the sand dune on the beach - they're smelling for roos, for sure! The JRT is activated by scent, then movement, based on my observations of my Tom. My Tenterfields have been good little mousers in their younger days too. My female sniffed first, then chased & killed when she ferreted one out. Sonia
  6. DITTO!! Having both Salukis and a JRT I can confirm that BOTH breeds have very high prey drive - and (have to disagree, SS Magpie!) not really expressed in different ways either. The Salukis are faster than the JR, sure - they have waaay longer legs, but for sheer tenacity in the face of insurmountable odds, the JR wins paws down!! He'd go after a moose (if we had them in Oz!!). My Saluki bitch is rarely let off-lead anymore, since an encounter with a giant jumping rat (kangaroo) left her slightly damaged, but howling for more! (BITCH!) She has much higher prey drive than my boy dog, but he's caught & despatched his fair share of rabbits/hares. Sonia
  7. ahhh... I see! Can't though - cos I'm not in town! Thanks for the numbers for Salukis - that's a decent entry, but I had thought it would be bigger than that. Some SA ppl obviously aren't entering this year. (Too busy with puppy breath, I guess!! ;)) Sonia
  8. How do you get the catalogue prior to the show?? HM Salukis are entered pls? I know there's a few Vics coming over - should be a good number this year! Sonia ETA I'll be there on Saluki Day (Fri 10th) - any other DOLers there on that day, please swing by the Saluki bench & say hi!! I have a grizzle dog & blonde bimbo bitch. Hafhafa is my kennel name...
  9. Thanks - I shall pass your compliments on to Moss!! Here's a pic of Arella wearing Moss's 65 cm coat - she normally wears a 55cm... that's the same 10cm difference you're talking about. It's too long on her by far (well, by 10cm actually!) and the neck opening is way too big. Could adjust the velcro... but too much hassle for me. BTW- This is the same coat as in the first pic with Moss - it's faded a bit over 5 years, but has had heavy use. It's soft, washes & dries well and the dogs seem comfortable in them. Sonia PS It's a horrid picture, but she didn't want it on (not his coat!!) and she hates stacking too... plus, I had to get her out of the armchair :D to take the pic too!! Tough life for her, I guess... ETA They are a quilted brushed cotton, with a fluffy layer between - just right for 15 degree days that the Salukis think should be spent inside and I think should be spent outside!!
  10. Chicken wings, frames or carcasses. RAW (NEVER cooked!!) Dogs are built to eat bones. http://www.rawlearning.com Sonia
  11. Very sad. Glad your Rini is ok - she's lovely by the way. My red & tan Kelpie has a Kong that she plays with all the time. Dishwasher to clean it. Had Kongs for years without issues - my old guy Zoom has two Kongs (well, one that's cut in half)... Just goes to show you that nothing's 100% safe... ever. Sonia
  12. Buddy coats aren't waterproof ones - they are soft cotton ones. Great for cooler weather (but not cold/freezing weather). My Salukis wear WB Buddy coats in spring & autumn - great between season coats. In fact, I need some new ones, and $20 is a great price. Sonia ETA - picture of Moss in his WB Buddy coat.
  13. Good thinking! I use Betadine too. My Saluki boy gets knocks on his back legs from rough housing regularly. I clean up with a weak solution of diluted Peroxide and then use diluted Betadine to treat it. Works really well. Sonia
  14. (sigh) It's really annoying. And then what if they don't and your dog bites? Last incident like this I had was a Rottie-mix barrelling up to me with 2 on-lead Salukis and an old blind/deaf Tenterfield whom I was carrying. The Rottie carried on and on, snarling & snapping at my dogs. Fortunately neither Saluki reacted, except to back away hurriedly. I called "Call your dog, please!" (got sworn at) so I called out again to be told (with expletives peppering the response) that it broke the lead, then it broke the collar as they tried to control it. I put my dogs away in the trailer and promptly took their license number off their car, to which I was abused because "they'll put it down, they'll put it down!!" Made me wonder if it's happened before then?? Called the ranger when I got home, but never heard back... Sonia
  15. Yaaaaah!! I laughed and laughed for ages after!! Sonia
  16. Our 1st family dog was a Cocker Spaniel. Not sure where he was from. Our 2nd family dog (mixbreed) was for the RSPCA, 3rd (Bull Terrier) from a breeder who did the papers (extra $$$) or no papers (less $$$) game. 1st "my very own" dog was BYB (Jack Russell, but later reg'd as a foundation stock Tenterfield Terrier). 2nd was Tenterfield Terrier from a reg'd breeder (but in my opinion he is/was a rescued dog!). 3rd dog was rehomed purebred Kelpie from working lines in SA, but sent to Perth and then rehomed to us in NSW. 4th dog is a fostered JRT-X who stayed... (luv ya, Tom! ) 5th & 6th dogs were Salukis from WA - reputable breeder, excellent after sales service and would buy all my [future] Salukis from her, but Moss is from her very last litter! 7th dog (Kelpie) is homebred from working lines, from original rehomed Kelpie. Have had 4 other foster dogs in that time through ARF in the ACT and private rescue in Vic. Have also had a Kelpie I bred returned and subsequently rehomed, but I wish I never rehomed him - Dusty is the greatest dog I have ever bred!! (edited for sp)
  17. Hehehehe. ;) I got a shock that a lady knew my two were Salukis when I was walking around the lake at Belair National Park a few months ago! I am often asked what breed they are but this lady walked right up and said (May I pat them?) What lovely Salukis!! I was speechless! I often get "Afghan?", "Greyhound-cross?", even had "Long haired Poodle?" (WTF!? ) Sonia ETA .... I saw a BMD today.... Does that qualify as rare?
  18. It's a very annoying habit that lots of people seem to think is excusable, if their dog is friendly! My comment is: what if my dog ISN'T friendly? My Salukis aren't DA, but they DO NOT LIKE other dogs in their faces. I like the comment about "My dog's NOT friendly!" - I might have to try that! Sonia
  19. Agreed. Makes me very glad mine were never mega-successful in the show ring, but were able to course sucessfully and free run often in a similar landscapes from whence they originally came. Sonia ETA - ummm, there seems to be a Kelpie in that pic too!!
  20. That's a shame...but true not everyone has the breeds best interest at heart. It's particularly sad in this particular case, because my friend did research temperament & health before she bought one. Breeder hasn't offered any backup now that the dog has hips & elbows that aren't great. Still, it's a learning curve, and my friend is doing everything she can for the beautiful, gorgeous dog. They are WONDERFUL dogs!! Sonia
  21. Lounging around today. Too windy/freezing cold for much else! Have visitors with a Dally, so said Dally & 2x Salukis are socialising outside atm, Kelpie (who doesn't get along with Saluki bitch ) will go out for a play with Dally later. JRT-X and Dally just been for a walk with their respective "dads" and old TTs x2 laying in front of the fire. Dog school for 2x Salukis + 1x JRT-X tomorrow, then perhaps a short bike ride with Salukis and a ball throwing game with Kelpie (in season, so no beach visit or school this week for her...) Sonia edited for sp!
  22. Yes!! Sonia PS - Although, having agreed with your comment, I think my 2 Salukis are lying in front of the fire in their PJs right now...
  23. What about a Dachy Rescue?? I imagine this would be a cheaper alternative - and you'd still get a great dog. Remember: The cheapest part of getting a dog is the initial cost of the dog!! Sonia
  24. One of my obedience club friends has a Berner. He has his CCD and is working towards CD now. He's gorgeous, with a fantastic temperament. Must do research about hips/elbows before owning and research the breeder carefully. Unfortunately my friend got caught out... Sonia
  25. I have used fish oil tablets (health food or chemist) for about 18 months for my 16+ year old girl who is stiff in the legs. Seemed to make a big difference when I ran out one time, so I make sure that I don't any more! She gets 2 tablets per day with food (= 2000mg) and weighs around 5 kilos. Sonia
