It is 4 weeks since I last kissed you good night and snuggled with you under the covers. I try to remember the good times with you and each day it gets a little easier, but some days... I weep for your soft, warm body, just to touch you once more. So this is where we part, my friend, And you'll run on around the bend, Gone from sight but not from mind, New pleasures there you'll surely find. I will go on, I'll find the strength, Life measures quality, not its length. One long embrace before you leave, Share one last look, before I grieve. There are others, that much is true, But they be they and they aren't you. And I, fair, impartial, or so I thought Will remember well all you've taught. Your place I'll hold, you will be missed, The fur I stroked, the nose I kissed. And as you go to your final rest, Take with you this -- I loved you best. (Author unknown). I miss you, Sally. xxx xxx

I think that when a pet's spirit leaves their body and goes on to the next existance, we need not worry about them leaving their body behind. They no longer require it. Nearly 4 weeks ago I lost my old girl Sally, 3 months short of 17 years. She was privately cremated by Paws for Pets (in Victor Harbor, SA) and her ashes now sit on my bedside table. But it's ME who needs her to be nearby... For those that didn't make a choice in the past which they are now comfortable with, remember that you loved your pet during his or her earthly existance and that's what counts - their body is no longer necessary and would have returned to the Earth wherever it was eventually anyway. Hugs to all who have lost, recently or in the distant past. Sonia xx

I know exactly how you feel. My old girl Sal was almost 17, like your Ricky, and I worked out I have been together with my Sal for half my life. She was the first to be "my own dog" when I moved out of home. Did I make that last appointment too soon? Not for her - not at all. For me, yes - another 20 years would have been too soon. I know how you feel. Sal got her wings on the 29th of July and the house just feels empty, even with 5 other dogs in it. Sonia RIP Sal & Ricky - perhaps you've found each other...

Words Of Wisdom: Respoect For Passage
Hafhafa Hounds replied to dogbesotted's topic in Palliative Care Forum
Thank you Donna, Having lost my heart dog 8 short days ago, I see the wisdom in your words all too clearly. It was time for Sally to leave and she did, with my permission and with the help of my vet. Without my permission, she might have held on just a little longer - but for who's gain and to what end? She was ready and I had to let her go. Sonia -
How often have I sat here and read DOLer's Bridge stories and let the tears well up? Here I am today, with my own post... Sally Matriarch of our pack, for almost 17 years. Given your wings on 29/7/2011. Missed by k9s Zoom, Tom, Arella, Moss & Meg, and by ppl Sonia & James. Reunited with Bullitt, Blitz, Max & Jess at the Bridge. You have been my dog, my friend, my life for so long. You're gone, but you're still here, forever in my heart. Your spirit is free. You are everywhere. Rest easy now, old girl. Sonia

Mmm, that's what I thought. It's a fairly self-limiting injury in that he's decided to rest, rather than hoon around like usual. It's open and raw tonight, but seems clean enough. He's not paying it too much attention. Maybe he remembers that I have an eliz-collar in the cupboard!! Sonia

Anyone got any good ideas about dressing/treating a cut pad? Last night some time between 6pm and midnight Moss somehow cut a thin slice of about 1cm diameter of his front main pad. It's sore (of course) and he's mainly resting, staying off it. I have no idea how he cut it, but I suspect it's a speed demon type injury - perhaps chasing birds went wrong... Anyone had any success with treating injured pads? What did you bathe it in? This is not highly serious, it's just a flesh wound, but it's in an awkward spot to treat and I wondered what others have done in the past. Sonia

Hot Weather And Keeping Dogs Outside
Hafhafa Hounds replied to RoxyNHemi's topic in General Dog Discussion
My big dogs (Kelpie & 2 Salukis) are outside, with shade, BIG tubs of water and ice blocks (big) in the water. They just lay around. never had an issue. The little (old) dogs are inside rain, hail, sleet, heat!! Aircon stays on at our stone miner's cottage from the moment it hits 25 deg at the start of a heatwave, otherwise it would heat up and never cool down again!! Last year, we had 46 deg plus and had all the dogs inside with us during the middle of the day. Fortunately it was holiday time, but if that happens during work time, I come home at lunc to check on them, if my OH isn't home. He's usually home by about 1pm on those kind of days anayway, and then they're all inside with him!! Sonia -
mmm, walking with Salukis you inevitably get the "feed your dog or I'll report you...." blah blah... A lot of people thinkthey are really beautiful and come up for a chat. Sonia

A Question About Two-tone Australian Kelpies
Hafhafa Hounds replied to koalathebear's topic in General Dog Discussion
I think it's partly to do with the white aspect, but I don't profess to know much about bench kelpies at all and am useless at colour genetics!! Personally, I like red & tan the best - because my Kelpies have always been working lines, I've kept the best working dogs (best as you can pick at 2 - 3 months) and they've always been red & tan. Having said that, we did breed for red & tan, having started with a bitch that colour and only using dogs of that colour too. We had no black & tans in either of our 2 litters, but in the first we had a "reverse" red & tan, where the main colour was a lighter, creamier tan and the points were a chocolatey red. Unfortunately this pup was still born, and I'm kicking myself that I didn't have the nouse to take a picture. Never seen it before that or again since. All our pups had some white, from a tiny smidge on their chest through to great big blazes on their chest, plus socks. Sonia ETA: the last pup is the mother of the first 3. The first 3 are all from her first litter when she was 3 years old. -

Rare Or Disqualifed Colours In Breeds.
Hafhafa Hounds replied to poodlefan's topic in General Dog Discussion
re; Vic's Azawakh Wouldn't think so... perhaps next year sometime? Sonia -
We have 6 dogs - 3 of each sex. The entire Kelpie (18 months) & Saluki (8 years) bitches do not tolerate each other at all. We've had to have the Saluki stitched twice, since the Kelpie turned 12 months. Not pleasant to watch and definately to the death. Interestingly the Saluki bitch got on very well with this Kelpie's mother (also entire) who used to live with us and she tolerates my Tenterfield bitch (16 years & desexed) without so much as a lift of the lip. It's just this one other bitch she can't stand. I can walk them together on lead. I can even let one (either) off lead for a run, but they can NOT ever be off lead together anyway. PERIOD. My Saluki male (entire) and JRTX male (desexed grumble at each other, esp. when I have one of the girls in season, but that's never more serious that a huff and puff or a sideways snarl as they pass by. Older Dogs And Anesthesia
Hafhafa Hounds replied to moosepup's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My eldest dog had dental work done at age 15. She came out of the anaesthetic well, but was quite slow for the next 24 hours. She slept VERY soundly that night, to the point where I was checking on her every half hour or so. She was fine. A week later, it was like nothing had happened. The risk is higher, but I'm sure your vet will look after her well. Ask for extra fluids - she'll have a drip which will help with hydration and expelling the drugs more quickly. The vet should have suggested it as a matter of course for an older dog. More $$$, but way worth it, imo. Sonia ETA Sally did not need any extractions. She still has all her teeth, except for 2 front one she busted on bones as a youngster... This is Sally age 15 with her minions (the Salukis, Arella & Moss). -
