Three Years Ago Now Kuga, A Very Special Old Man
Hafhafa Hounds replied to hortfurball's topic in Rainbow Bridge
RIP Kuga. What a gorgeous guy. I love the pix of his life from pup to old man. Very very special to have shared so long with him. Gone to the couch in the sky. edit just saw the date on your first post... I only saw this thread now and had to reply - it's just a beautiful story of a wonderful dog. I only just lost my Sally 2 months ago this coming Friday at nearly 17. It takes a long time for the pain to go then, I guess. -
Pawfect!!!

Very sorry for your loss. It must be extra hard to lose a dog before s/he's old. Sonia xxx

I feed 2 lazy Salukis, 1 highly active/high strung Kelpie and 2 small, elderly terriers on a prey model diet for about $120 per month. That's about $4/day. I feed chicken frames, beef/lamb meaty meat, lamb's hearts, tongues & liver plus sides of lamb (ribs+meat+fat) once a week for the 3 big'uns. I believe that's cheaper than a kibble/wet can food diet for me, cos the Kelpie and Salukis would need heaps of that (IMHO) crap to stay decent. People often remark on the small size of the meals I feed the dogs, but they can clearly see that the dogs are in good nick. I source all this through my local butcher, who gives me a pretty good deal. Plus I buy bits and pieces at the local supermarket (turkey necks, chicken bits & pieces) when they're on special. My dogs are fed once daily (big dogs) or twice daily (small dogs). ETA I don't feed ANY kibble or wet/can food. Only supplement the older dogs with fish oils caps.

Err, my Salukis have 2" thick foam mattresses, covered with a woolen blanket, with their double-bed sized doonas thrown over the top and a fleecy sheet over the top of that in winter so it's not cold when they hop in... and their "kennel" is their trailer... They also wear their polar fleece onesie pjs, plus an overcoat if it's going to be frosty. Failing that, they sleep inside by the fire.... Spoiled much?? Sonia ETA I don't know how this info helps you much, if at all... :D

I thought I was ok... but every now and then I just feel awful and break down completely. Thank you for your kind thoughts. It makes it better to know others (who I don't even know) care just that little bit. Sonia

Missing you today... no special reason. I got the meat order - maybe that's why. It was always one of your favourite times... Please look out for Bobby the Whippet. He's on his way.

Lure Coursing In Adelaide - For Non-greyhounds
Hafhafa Hounds replied to jacqui835's topic in General Dog Discussion
Lots of dogs will chase a lure - not just sighthounds. I think it would be great to have it open to all breeds. Generally, I think lure coursing is one at a time or two of the same breed/height/weight etc. Sonia -

plus I'm sure Insha-llah & I can rustle up a few more Salukis (& maybe a Pharoah....)!!! What about trying the Grey straight track that has already said it's okay - when the Greys aren't racing? Sonia edit sp -
x 2 I stopped walking my little terriers as we were constantly harrassed by bigger dogs loose & without supervision. I felt terrible, but their safety was more important than their exercise - fortunately (before you go crook!!) they were by then elderly and no longer really needing/enjoying their walks. In their twilight years we live in a property that's big enough for them to trip around the yard and that's enough for them. I do walk my bigger dogs (Salukis & Kelpie) but get sick and tired of the rushes/attacks by other dogs - off-lead and on-lead - whose owners sing out "Don't worry, s/he's friendly!". Great - but my dogs now tend to go on the offensive because they've been rushed once too often by dogs who aren't "don't worry, s/he's friendly"!!! I have reported every rush/attack I have ever witnessed. My council ranger knows me well!! Sonia

Don't Lose Sight Of What You Have.
Hafhafa Hounds replied to dogslife's topic in General Dog Discussion
Sincere condolences to you in your time of grief. I know how you feel. Sally my dog got her wings 5 weeks ago after almost 17 awesome years. Never, never long enough, and although I am grieving for her terribly, I am so, so glad I was with her when the time came, and spent her last few hours on this Earth cuddling her. "There are others, that much is true, But they be they and they aren't you." (Anon.) I found this excerpt from a poem to be quite comforting after Sally went. I have 5 other dogs and it reminds me that although they are not her, they are still my dogs and deserving of all the care, love and attention I have always given them. There were a few black days there some weeks back, where I didn't want them near me. Thankfully, that faded quickly. Hugz to you and your dogs tonight, while I go hug the remainder of my pack too. Sonia -
My eldest dog Sally died 5 weeks ago, 3 months short of 17. Her pal Zoom is still going strong at almost 16. This was taken 11 days before she died. She wasn't sick until the very last day - slept a lot in the last few months, but still did her zoomies outside when I got home from work! :D

Hmmmm, have thought about downsizing the Salukis to Whippets to Iggys in the distant future.... I recently lost my dog and have been thinking about how lucky she and I both were to have had each other's company for 17 years. I have been watching all the old souls going in and out of rescue over the past few weeks and think that when my 2 other oldies go, I might rescue/foster older dogs for a while. And a GAP Grey - foster, of course - the more I can save, the better!! Sonia

Three Syllable Dog Names
Hafhafa Hounds replied to littlesquashyguys's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have Arella (Bella, Smella, Smell, Blondie) Moss (Mozzy, Mosquito, Moses, Mo) Zoom (Booz, Booznell, Boozy [all oo like in book], Zoomer, Zoomie) Tom (Tommy, Thomas, Thompson, Tom-AArrrse, Arse-Dog) Meg (Megsy, Meggles, Smeg-Head and personal fave: Megatron leader of the Deceptacons!!) The Salukis (Moss & Arella) also answer to "Lukis" and all come when I call "Dogs!!". Any name will be both shortened and lengthened depending on the particular moment that you need to call it out!!
