12 Yr Old Golden Retreiver Coughing Up Blood
barkon replied to indigirl's topic in General Dog Discussion
Sending healing vibes to Reg, I hope he made it through the night and is on the improve. Did you manage to get some sleep indigirl? -
Cool pics!!! We have a new nest right next to the back door, seems a shame to 'move' it, so will most likely leave it there for a while. They are incredible insects.

I am an awful soul, I saw these pics in the M&M thread and forgot to comment! China looks like she has filled out considerably! They are looking great and of course Bronson is the 'man'

LC, I've never heard of giving dogs arnica, but we use arnica in our house all the time for bruises, aches and pains. I have a friend who also gives it to her kids in tablet form, basically for the same reason. Whether it works in dogs... I have no idea. Sorry.

My lot ate Great Barko, but only because they had to. Since I changed to Uncle Albers they have been back eating with gusto.

Yup, you lose quite a bit of space. I have one in my sliding door. Love it. I simply have it installed into the second runner space ( for the screen door, rather then the glass one) and if we need to get something big in through the door I take it out, its easy. Dogs and cats all use it with ease, and I have the biggest size. Highly recommend them.

You started me crying again rexiam, I'd managed to stop.... I can't get our special Rex moments out of my head tonight, and am so pleased I was able to stop at your place this arvo and spend a little time with him. Talk to you tomorrow. :p

Hugs to you Trish, I know where you are at, we had to put Emily to sleep last week. Know that Grandma appreciated every minute she had with you and the pleasure you gave her in her last year was the most important. Its all a little uncanny, as my pc crashed and I lost all the photos from the last 4 mths, a lot of them of Em. I hope you manage to get yours back up and running so the memories can be seen. RIP Grandma

Glad I found this thread Alyssa, your pair are just gorgeous. Just adore Bronson, would love a boy like him one day. Your river is much like ours.... except it has water in it..

Growing up in HK, one memory for me was that when the ponies were put down they were cut up for dog meat to be fed to the police dogs. Doesn't help you at all, but does show its been done for years, I wouldn't have thought they would feed them to working dogs if it was not beneficial.... maybe.

Hugs to all involved, its a terrible situation.

My apologies Bostongirl, you are right. Have done a bit more research on it all and strangely enough they are one in the same.... will be leading me to more questions next time I see my vet. If you can get through all the technical jargon this is a fairly interesting article on it all.... http://www.arthritis.au.com/capps/capps_01.htm

I"ve used Pentosan now on three dogs, two currently. I've noticed a difference in all. My current old Dane just had her 6 weekly shot, and you can definitely see the difference. Our little terrier too is also on it, to great advantage. Its also used in horses. The injections are Pentosan Polysulfate Sodium, they have four one weekly shots then one every 6 weeks as a maintenance. Costly I know, but effective. I use cartrophen also, so they are different. Hope it works for your old boy.

I have no idea if my advice will be of any use to you, but thought I would share our experience. We adopted a Great dane who had had two years of a terrible life. We also live in a rural area and socialising is rare. After 6 years Konnie finally got to the point where, if someone ignored her she would come up behind them and sniff them, and even allow them to pat her. How did we get there? Well, when she first was here, and people called, she would take off to the top part of the garden and stay there. I never had her inside with strangers, so she never felt trapped. If, on the rare occassion we had visitors, we would sit out on the porch and ignore her, but talk to the other animals, so she knew that these people weren't going to hurt her. It was a long and gradual effort. On occasion, if someone was here often, we would gently take her by the collar and lead her over to the person ( behind them, or beside them, never face on to them) and reassure her, and if all was good we let the person pat her. Always outside, never in. Mind, she was a very special dog, and despite her early years and her hang ups she never once was nasty in anyway. So, after all that, have your pup near you whilst folk are outside, don't force the visitors to interact with her, just ignore her and let her come to it on her own. Reassure her lots. Oh, and don't let the visitors pat her if she is not willing, I found that those that came here and played the big tough dog people who tried to force Konnie to let them pat her, were ones that she never forgot! If I have it all wrong, I"m sorry, but it worked for us. Good luck

Goodness Stormie! Thats a long time! I guess as emmark said... there is only one way to find out! lol Might have to... Thanks!

Its now in Woolies, and I was wondering whether anyone knew anything about it. Two tubes for a medium dog is in the $26 range, so price is kinda attractive, but was wondering on how effective it is.

Hugs to you Fazel at this very sad time.

Thanks for the little note about the potassium, had forgotten to ask the vet about that one! We ( hubby and I) have just set up a 'tick' board for the kitchen, so we can mark off if Konnie has had her jab. If I"m in town he stops in and gives it to her around 2... the tick will ensure that I don't double up. We live on a horse stud farm, and the stud vet will have a look at her soon too, he has been in touch with my town vet, and it seems everything will be under control for future visits. The stress on Konnie will be markably less if the farm vet looks at her. We also have xray facilities here and I think that was going to be the next course of action for her. She is doing well still, although asking to be in more during the day which is fine, she has her own bed that she is happy to sleep on and is good at asking to go out. Amazing for a dog that lived in a concrete box for the first two years of her life. You should have seen her when she first arrived and I had to hang the washing out! Keep smiling Barb

Thanks Stormie, Our vet had said exactly that, but I"m pleased to say the incontinence has stopped. Konnie is a neurotic darling with lots of things, but having injections just doesn't faze her, even so, I would like to avoid more drugs. I have to start her on pentosan next week ( waiting for it to arrive) which will be ANOTHER injection for the poor old darling, albeit only for four weeks. Anyway, she is definitely feeling better.
