  1. I've just started reading Clicker Training for Obedience and he says to use a torch with a flicker switch instead of a clicker for a deaf dog. A friend has recommended the book. She has been training dogs for many years but only just gotten into clicker training and what she has achieved with her new Cavalier pup in weeks is amazing!
  2. Oh dear I am sorry she is not doing better. My other girl was on Vetmedin and Lasix. The vet put her on Fortekor to start with and she didn't respond to it so changed to Vetmedin. I'm afraid she wasn't with me much longer. She was only 8 We had her on another fluid tablet as well towards the end but nothing really helped. The night that she sat up struggling to breath and me crying all night I knew I had to let her go. My older girl, who was on Fortekor, did well and her murmur didn't alter much over time - I actually had to put her to sleep for another problem.
  3. Was it Priceless Pets? http://www.pricelesspets.com.au/?page=home They have good prices for heartworm etc
  4. <We pop him on the lead and slowly walk around the yard saying our keyword "hurry up" but he just holds it in until he comes inside again. > Hi Erin, At this stage 'hurry up' doesn't mean anything to him. Wait till he does something and then use the phrase and lots of treats and praise. He will get it eventually. Some pups take a bit longer than others.
  5. I'd probably feed it about once a week. Usually chicken liver or chicken hearts - sometimes lambs fry (yum - though I do prefer mine cooked ).
  6. Terrorbull there is no doubt about it - your dog is a classic!!!!

    Barking

Oh dear your neighbours don't sound friendly at all Good luck. Can you leave a radio on near the door that she can hear? It might give her a bit of comfort.
  8. <He seems to think that all her problems - dermatitis, anal sac stuff, sneezing etc are possibly a food allergy reaction. So, she's going on a controlled elimination diet so I can figure out what to steer clear of. Oh - that 15kg bag of food was on my doorstep when I got home! I am going to use it, and incorporate it into her diet as it claims to be au naturele and has loads of omega 3 & 6 in it which is good as the vet suggested I give her 2000mg of omega 3 every day. > Flashfire a lot of dogs do much better on no dog food when they have skin and other such troubles. My old girl had all sorts of skin itchies and such and once I started BARF feeding her she was a different dog! It's quite easy to supplement them with the omega oils.
  9. Many vet clinics run puppy preschool
  10. Aaah yes this is one of those choice issues of dog ownership :D One of my girls never scooted but chewed around her tail when her anal glands were bothering her. Your dog may have emptied them herself or they may need further expressing by a vet or groomer.
  11. <It's like saying you choked on brussel sprout therefore they are dangerous!! > T-time I won't eat brussel sprouts just in case - you never know :D
  12. Oh yes I have known many Cavs who vacuum up necks! Ingrid barely chews hers and if the necks are thickish I make sure that I attack them a bit with the meat cleaver before feeding. Lacey chews hers quite well. Bree chews smallish ones but I make sure to smash hers too if they are bigger. Mine have them most days. The only problem (apart from choking) that I've known about with necks is that some dogs can get a bit constipated on them and do better on wings.
  13. HI, Sorry to hear about your Cav. My old girl was on Fortekor 20 and I split the tablet into 4. The vet sold it to me that way to save some money. If the coughing is not improving I think the meds need to be reviewed. Fortekor did not help my other girl much at all. She did much better on another medication - though it was more expensive again Did you say she was on a fluid tablet too? The vet may need to increase the dose of that. Good luck. It is impossible to say just how long you will have with her. One of mine lasted years and the other went very quickly
  14. Not much you need to do at this age. Maybe just give him a gentle brush over with a soft brush to get him used to it. He can have a bath whenever he needs one - maybe once a fortnight - depends how dirty he gets! I like to use Aloveen shampoo and conditioner. It is gentle and smells nice As he gets more coat you will need to comb through the areas that knot such as behind his ears and the trousers and of course his ears. A snood is a good idea to keep his ears clean when he eats but you don't need that till he is older and has some length to the ears.
  15. I've used Vetshed and been happy with them. http://www.thevetshed.com As the others have said you can't go past Priceless Pets for heartworm stuff etc.
  16. How is the pup coming along Schnauzers? That is a good way of checking weight gain Silverdog
  17. Just remember to keep the pup eating what his breeder has had him on for a while. Once he is settled in you can start to slowly change him over to what you want him eating. If you change his food straight off he will have an upset tummy. It's enough of an upheaval just changing homes for a baby. My last pup came to me on Royal Canin. She has been doing very well on it so I've kept her on it.

    Bath Time...

<Everyone has different opinons on bathing. Our vet advised us that every 10 weeks is probably best.> Good grief every 10 weeks! That's a long time between baths. I don't think I'd have them sleeping in my bed if I only bathed that often I do mine every couple of weeks.
  19. When I had big dogs I ran a hose from the laundry tap so that I could use warm water. And you know those things that attach to the hose to water in fertiliser or weedkiller? I had one like that and put shampoo in it so that it got right to the skin. It was years ago so can't remember where I got it but probably a hardware. For a border collie I would definitely get a good blower type dryer. That one on ebay looks good. You can blast the water out of the coat.
  20. I am so sorry. We get so darned attached to these critters don't we?! I feel sorry for those people who say things like, "it was only a dog/budgie/cat - get over it". They have never known the love we feel for our animals.
  21. Hi Bub, Look sorry I'm not going to be much help but I just wanted to ask can I move in? Your cooking sounds wonderful! In a veggie mix I use carrots, some green leaves, sweet potato, squash, pumpkin, celery..... I sort of wander around the veggie section finding small amounts of stuff so it ends up being a mix. I had read that peas were not good but I can't remember why they said. I've actually been lazy and not done veggies for a while.
  22. Good on you for helping out with advice. She looks a cutie and not her fault some idiot decided to bring her into the world....
  23. If they are going to buy from the supermarket Optimimum is good.
  24. Yep my baby Bree (see pic) loves it! She came to me eating it and when I tried to change her over to Advance she got diarrhoea.
  25. Is your dog in the front yard? It sounds like it from your post (but I could be wrong!). Moving him to the backyard and blocking his line of vision so he doesn't see other dogs walking by would be a good start. It sounds like he is guarding the yard. My girls used to lie on a bed in the front window in the sun but I've had to move the bed and block the window cause they were using nasty language at passing dogs and cats! It is much more peaceful now Exercise and training are definitely the go! You have an active dog and he won't behave as you'd like if he is not taught. Well behaved dogs don't just happen. You can join an obedience training club quite cheaply and learn how to train him.
