  1. I agree with Tony and Huski. If the dog does not know what is expected of him then correcting is cruel. I won't apply a punishment (+P) unless I am 100% certain the dog knows the command.
  2. If you leave without locking him in the run what does he do?
  3. How hard do the dogs hit it? Brush it or do they put pressure on it?
  4. Lmao, I'm very slow on my projects so don't expect great speed
  5. I wouldn't use a touch switch, I'd modify a normal switch like one of those button ones with little to not resistance and attach a plate, it's hard to explain without physically showing you. If I have time in the next 1-2 weeks I'll build one myself and see how well it works. But... to use a touch switch it's another $45 for the switch. Dick Smiths has a kit for a buzzer, grab the kit and replace the switch it has with leads to your modified switch or touch switch. I only have a very basic understanding of electronics but the dick smiths or whatever guys will know more than I.
  6. That's uber expensive for what is really a basic circuit. ETA: You could make one for a few dollars if you went to JB HiFi, they'd even tell you how to do it (probably).
  7. ToT: Triangle of Temptation. http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=64101 NILIF: Nothing in life is free. Dog works for everything. Anything the dog finds rewarding it has to earn.
  8. I'm after the oil though Mum wants the powder
  9. Ahhhh, thought so. Learnt a lot with the complex skills workshop. It tied a lot of the other techniques together. You were a great instructor as well, thanks

    Digging ?

I'd rather use dirt than sand just because my dogs would dig the sand from a clamshell in minutes. Anyway, for digging I'd just redirect it to somewhere else. Dogs instinctively dig, and it's a self rewarding behaviour so simply digging for them is reinforcing so it isn't easy to stop. I'd use the treats method and get the dogs to dig where you want them to.
  11. What steps does everyone here take to prevent resource guarding of food? Not from other dogs, but from humans. The obedience club that I'm looking at volunteering with recommends students/clients/whatevers that you should take the dogs food off them very often. I disagree with such an approach, I feel it might work with many dogs but I believe it can make guarding even worse in some dogs. This is actually one of their pointers on establishing leadership. Funnily enough, being a huge supporter of dominance and pack rank theories I disagree with almost everything they have listed in that section but it's their club. Actually, tbh, I disagree with most of the ways they teach behaviours as well but I must do what they say.
  12. Yeah, I'll definitely do some training with the club before I entered a trial.
  13. Yeah, I'll take him along to the trialing night and just sit with him at a distance to see how he responds. I know dogs won't be a distraction for his training but getting him used to being near other dogs might be a good idea. Even if I just take him every time I go and crate him for the two-three hours.
  14. The change will be very, very gradual as well. btw, I am looking at importing some powder or oil into Australia so I don't have to squeeze capsules. Once I have prices I'll create a thread to see if anyone wanted to add some to my order. It's expensive as hell to buy straight powder or oil here.
  15. Are you 100% certain it is seperation anxiety and not attention seeking? Montu was doing something similar and I thought it was seperation anxiety but when my sec trainer saw him do it he did a few tests (behind fences, me out of sight, me in sight) and said it was simply attention seeking. He had similar symptoms to your dog but they were just excitement from me returning (rather than anxious or being distressed). You know your dog best so it very well could be seperation anxiety but it is worth considering whether it is just attention seeking. Once I stopped letting him win, it ended. He still goes a bit stupid in his run before training but at least now he doesn't act like he is being murdered when I leave him on a rope or with someone else.
  16. I am, I'll just join to compete. Doesn't mean I'm going to follow their code of ethics or care about what they have to say.
  17. Pet hate here. Everything is made up of chemicals. There isn't a single thing in existance that isn't made up of chemicals.
  18. It's safe, but it might zap you a few times accidentally
  19. Gizmo goes through about 20cm of roo tail in about 15-20 minutes. Lily just doesn't eat the bone.
  20. Only dogs to be off-leash are those working at the time. Something to bear in mind is that there is usually more than one ring working at a time, and some dogs do make a break for it and zoom out of the ring and not all handlers can get them back right away. Just because it's an obedience trial, doesn't mean all the dogs are completely compliant. Like most things in life it's not totally risk free but if you have Gizmo in a crate when he's not working you should be fine. Another thing to bear in mind re "getting in your dog's face" is proofing stays. You can't pick what dog you line up next to, so as much as you might like to put your dog next to a sensible older bitch with good manners, he may have to hold a stay near a young entire male Dobe projecting "I am GOD!" at him. Edited to fix html and spellinks  I definitely won't enter him if I think he is a risk to another dogs safety. I've only just started his rehabilitation process so he might come right. His aggression isn't extreme at all so I'm not too worried either. His stays are very well proofed, he'll very, very rarely break them and when he does it's only because he anticipates a recall command. I haven't worked with him in a multi dog environment though so I might have to take him along to the obedience club and see how he goes there. ML, nah he won't do anything if a dog sniffs him. But if a dog jumps on his head then he may resort to aggression, but like I said I am working on it and if I feel he is a risk to other dogs he won't compete. So far he hasn't with any dogs outside of our home (and dogs have rushed us on the street), but when I introduced Montu to him Montu did it and Gizmo wasn't happy.
  21. It appears I did miss something then. Thanks, guess I'll grab a 4ft leash then and start teaching the little boy to heel.
  22. I also wouldn't revert to barf here, Stick with chicken and rice imo, if the allergies don't go away then you've narrowed it down heaps. If you change now, you've opened the possibilities.
  23. Ahhhk, I thought maybe I had just managed to miss a leash size when I read it. Might consider entering and doing some work with Gizmo. I assume obedience trials are fairly organised and no off leash dogs running around getting in your dogs face?
  24. you had me at 88.3% water  Frozen eggs are good as well. Unless your sibes will swallow them entire like Lily does. Gizmo licks them, keeps him entertained for 10 minutes. Distracted sibe for 10 minutes = awesomeness.
