  1. Yeah, he is teething so we don't do any bite work. He releases his drive by retrieving... except he rarely actually brings it all the way back too me Before he was teething when he'd make the bite he would come in close. I'd pull him in close, let him go out, side to side... Everything. I couldn't move the prey item quickly enough, the guys on the specialist working forum recommended a flirt stick and a fishing rod works just as well. I'm getting lessons with Craig soon though. Vickie, I agree with you. Montu goes into drive for anything that moves but it's clear to me that he prefers certain items but that could simply be because of the way I move the different items?
  2. There is a field in wombye that I see dogs at a lot, beside the soccer field. Or maybe that's palmwoods
  3. Is it just me or are there two distinct types of prey drive? Type 1) This appears to be the drive Montu has. The desire to chase anything that movies. Grab it, run around with it... whatever. Type 2) This is the type the huskies have. They have no interest at all in toys or anything else. But the minute a prey ANIMAL comes into the picture their drive intensifies to levels that owners of ordinary dogs will never imagine I can't harness Gizmos or Lilys drive as they simply don't give a toss about toys. Lily doesn't even know what to do when I have the rag out - she usually just lies down. But when a bird lands she is suddenly in hunting mode. Any thoughts?
  4. Well surely that is the fault of the owner, not the training tool. As many of us have posted in this thread, there are some of us who can take the tool off and not have the dog pull. It's about getting to that stage and sadly not all dog owners are perfect and can manage that using purely positive training, or without any assistance from a tool. Mmm except i have tried it myself.....and yes i know how to use a check chain......with no success. So you know how to use one... but failed using it. Right... I know French but I fail every french test and no one can understand me.
  5. I'll bring my 42'' crate for you to use, normal wire crate. My GSD is in it but he can jump into the smaller one for the weekend.
  6. Hrmmm. How big is that relative to a sibe gads, is he destructive? I might be able to bring a spare crate along. ETA: Though if you're having trouble with your dog with aggression then it'll probably be recommended that you buy a crate anyway.
  7. Lmao, that does make sense. If I was feeding that much (veges) then it probably would take a lot longer! minimum, good tip, freeze the eggs! Good to keep them distracted for a while.
  8. So you don't think dogs can have a favorite drive toy?
  9. So you've used a check or a prong under professional guidance? Yes? No? I've seen many people use positive reinforcement without any success at all, the dog will only come when they have food or the reward... Doesn't mean all positive reinforcement is crap or will fail. ETA: Do you live in SEQ? You're welcome to come and witness my dogs both with and without a prong.
  10. I use four different things when doing drive training. (1) Rag on a short stick. (2) Ball. (3) Ball on half a fishing rod (4) The soft toy Spot brought Montu tied to half a fishing rod. (4) is used when he isn't showing much interest in anything, which is rare.
  11. Then go and learn to use one. Right because i dont know how to use a check chain? Perhaps you should go learn how to train a dog to not pull without any equipement? Sorry to burst your bubble but they are merely a temporary control, one that is no different to a halti or gentle leader, the dog immediately starts pulling as soon as the prong or whatever is taken off.......what has the dog learned about not pulling? Uhh nothing! No. But congratulations, you've just demonstrated to everyone who knows how to use training collars that you have no idea about their proper use. If you "condition" the collar correctly then the dog never even realises the correction is coming from the collar. Mine never comes off my dogs, well, never used to... But that was as an insurance policy. You know sort of like cars, I can drive and I know I won't have an accident but one day, if something unforeseeable occurs, then I want to be covered. Responsible? I think so. Ashka, are they really? They're not a prohibited import.
  12. I never juiced mine. I just wacked them in the blender and then fed them the veges blended. I've completely dropped veges from their diet now though and only feed meats. They only got 30grams each a day so about 2kg per month. If you do need to juice then I guess it would take a heap longer - I intentionally chose veges that would go well in the blender I also don't weigh. Somehow two scoops of our scoopey spoon fills the container perfectly (650g) then the dogs get 300g and 350g which I usually just guess. If I am feeding mince that wasn't in the containers I weigh it though.
  13. I don't get how people don't have the time. Even when I fed veges I could do enough veges for a month in about 10 minutes. Then I froze the veges in little circles... Slop the mince in takeaway containers (one per day) and the entire process took maybe 30 minutes and I'm set for the month.
  14. Feed larger frozen food. I feed blocks of frozen mince or frozen chicken carcasses. He swallows necks in one bite and can take wings down without a single bite if he wants.
  15. I'd personally do it the same way. If dog annoys another dog (IE other dog says piss off and mia doesn't) I'd remove her. Can probably do it with an e-collar too, but I wouldn't know how. But you can do everything with them.
  16. Only if you let them. He was probably testing you long before "he started pulling and pulling". At that age of course they start testing the boundaries, you just need to reinforce the correct behaviour that they already know how to do. And I did that with a prong collar. I don't get the fascination people have with using the harder methods. I prefer using the easiest method which will get the quickest result...
  17. I'd never use a check, I hate them. They put all the pressure on one spot. BTW, I think it's a load of crap that if you teach it loose lead walking now it'll be fine as an adult. Axle was perfect till about 6-7 months and then he started pulling and pulling.
  18. Mia is just...curious... Wait till she wears out?? Wears out?? We are in for a loooooooong weekend I wanted to see if I can get some tips on how to make Mia less friendly? when she meets other dogs. She doesn't take the hint when another dog doesn't want to be tapped on the head with her paw eta: is there also a creek for dogs to swim in? or did I dream that? Should have done that when socialising ;) When she jumps on another dog remove her
  19. Should I be bringing any of my training gear? I know you said the stuff I am comfortable handling my dog in but any use bringing tugs, toys and training collars? Though, asking is useless as I'll probably bring it all regardless of your answer ETA: Micha and Lily would probably go well together as Lily is just so "meh" about other dogs Though being a sibe she might be a bit more into it??? She confuses me - she has no time for Montu, plays for about 5 seconds every hour with Benji and LOVES Gizmo.
  20. Ohhh, sorry. I am liking the idea of vaccinations less and less, but I will ALWAYS get them done (assuming the research suggests that I need to get them done in the future). I just don't like how common side effects are and it troubles me
  21. A 10kg dog can easily devour a carcass. Montu gets a lot of food, generally he gets a carcass in the morning, some wings at lunch and some more wings at night time and he isn't much bigger than 10kg. His total food consumption per day is anywhere from 500g->1kg (double to four times as much as my two huskies combined.) I also feed chunks of frozen mince and frozen tins of sustainably fished fish I agree with PPS that splitting his dinner won't achieve anything.
