Luke, tried training with food drive rather than prey drive? No point trying to use prey if your dog just prefers food.

Diva, was it Mark Lawrie. He is the president of the AVA, as in, the Australian Vet Assosciation. He may lose credibility in our eyes but with a title like that, the public listens. Just did a bit of research, he is also the chief vet for the RSPCA. http://avacms.eseries.hengesystems.com.au/...;ContentID=5737 Cris, my vet openly told me they are sponsored by Hills?

And he said why? And he was referencing to a 'bone here and there' rather than regularly? He explained this? Bet he didn't. I hate sweeping statements without detail and reinforcing accurate explanation. Especially via the media channels, as so many people 'out there' hang on their very words and take them so literally. I said I feed my dogs raw meats in the morning and bones at night time & she asked the vet guy and he said that raw food is a bad idea and premium food from your vet is a better idea and that feeding bones offers little for your dog and were an inefficient method of keeping teeth cleaned so if he was commenting on what I do, then he was commenting on feeding a bone every day but who knows. He didn't really expand past that.

They are a very BIG company. Evil or not, they make good soap. Unilever is possibly one of the most unethical corporations in the world. I can't believe people still support them, even more disturbing that dog owners support them. They've attracted cricitism from everywhere, animal welfare, environmentalists, social activists.

A week or so ago when I was on the radio I was giving barf the thumbs up and then some vet guy who is the president of some vet association came on. Anyway, he said bones were a very inefficient way of keeping your dogs teeth clean. What is possibly better than bones?

The concept sounds the same as neutralisation.

Unilever is an evil company.

In a movie once the trees weren't green enough so they used spray paint. Food for thought.

I agree with Huski here. You can make outside comfortable as well. What's the difference between a run with a crate in it (or some kind of kennel) and a crate inside? Unless of course everyone expects that dog owners allow their dogs on their beds. I do, but I'm weird.

Spaying - When Is The Best Time To Do It?

Might want to include working and sport dogs in there, there is a reason many keep them entire. -
Staffordshires Cited In 145 Dog Attacks
Just Midol replied to Sticky's topic in General Dog Discussion
Some roosters can cause a huge amount of damage when they attack. They dig their spurs in and rip. Very nasty stuff and not something to laugh at (no matter how funny it sounds). This is why cock fighting exists and why it is so cruel. Still pretty funny, even chickens can be pretty mean. Granted I doubt they'd cause that kind of damage. Imagine sitting with mates drinking. "Yeah, got attacked by a chook last week... Was in the hospital for days" -
I meant they both have the "You don't know how hard it is to live with one till you've lived with one" bit You're all bias
-
They sound similar to sibes, except sibes are pretty and most gundogs aren't

Links are allowed. No idea how that teaches a dog to behave in the house, unless you tether. I do tether my dogs as pups when they are inside. Montu is 7 months now and still hasn't had free access inside.

I don't even know what a teaching lead is. Clickers are awesome. The e-collar is pretty awesome. You can't chose what aids to use before hand. The aids are chosen based on the dog.
-
Dogs always smell. We get used to it, but they always smell. The idea that only a dirty dog smells is kind of odd.
-
If the dog can't hear you then you'll never get a decent recall. I know the dog that can't hear isn't yours, but if you get this issue in your dog you need either an e-collar or just a collar with vibrate only so you can communicate.
-
Plus, Midol you trouble maker you, I wasnt referring to how hard it is to train them. Its EASY when you know how. I know, I wanted to know what drives they had which made them behave poorly sometimes.

I also concur with laffi.

Aggressive People Make Aggressive Dogs?
Just Midol replied to MolassesLass's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I think a soft owner who lacks leadership & doesn't discipline their dog is more likely to end up with an aggressive dog. -
Unfriendly Toward Other Dogs
Just Midol replied to Loyal K9's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
My vote: Fear based aggression. My solution: Experienced behaviorist. Aggression either gets worse or it gets better, it doesn't stay the same unless you isolate the dog. Every encounter is making it worse. BTW: I don't believe it's really possible to reverse fear based aggression but you can remove the symptoms (so he won't show he is aggro) but I'd never trust him around strange dogs. -
She said obedience, showing is entirely different and irrelevant. You can train for distractions just as easily without a club. I don't go to an obedience club and nor will I ever attend an obedience club. Too many narrow minded clubs which aren't open to different training styles.

I've always thought this as well? Both my dogs have fairly high prey drives (one moreso than the other) but they are able to control themselves around my rats......though cats are an entirely different kettle of fish. Tollers are extremely intelligent, whether that ties in with trainability is another matter :D What is it though, with people always saying "If you don't own said breed then you don't know what they are like"? Every breed is different but they are all still just a dog  Every breed is different and then every individual within the breed is different. I do think there are unique breeds, such as sibes, that were not only bred with insane prey drive levels, dominance levels and pack drive but they were also bred to be very aloof and independent. That makes them hard to train, but there are probably other breeds with the same characteristics. So the only hard thing about a gundog is their drive levels?
-
Ruger recently said in a thread that unless we own a gundog we won't know what they like Can someone explain the traits they have which make them harder to train or the inability to get reliable commands? I don't know much about gundogs. I assume they have a decent level of prey drive?

How To Avoid Dogs Becoming 'collar Smart'
Just Midol replied to WildatHeart's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Throw the collar on every day for a few weeks before using it. Never put the collar on and let her get a zap immediately.
