I agree, but what do you do to fix this problem please. Sue
-
Hi Monah, its such a worry isn't it. A brain snap is very much like it. I will not freak out tho, if i can't resolve it, i will not take him anywhere, he will be happy just to stay at home with us. But love training and socialising. But will be in control, with the help of a Halti from now on. Good luck, and i wish you success. Sue

Thanks all, im a confident owner, but now maybe wont be. He seems to take a dislike to these dogs from a distance. Thinking about it, they are all light brown or light brown and white. No worries with a corgi who is black and white. or 2 silkys, honey colour.etc.The only dogs there that are brown are not acceptable, it seems. I really don't know and am picking at straws here. Taking a step back, he does focus on a certain dog, and barks, lunges, and ignores all other dogs around him.I mean total focus. Usually a new dog. Its a mystery to me, and i will be on guard this Sunday. He was spayed 2 months ago. Thanks. Sue

From a rescue shelter, he is 2 yrs old, and no history. He gets along with 14 dogs at school, but now its 4 little dogs he doesn't like, but 5 little he still loves. This little one, as soon as he turned up, thor got exicited and wanted to go to say hello, so took both dogs close to sniff, and fine, closer nearly nose to nose, fine. Then Thor stood over the pup sniffing,( the pup just sat there,) then started getting into the pup.His bloody tail was wagging until he started into the pup. I really don't know. Sue

Hi Janba, yes he was sniffing from above, but not sure of body language, looked friendly to me. It worries me that i can't trust him with any dog that cowers under him. Sue

Need advice hopefully from Herr, Rotty trainer/ dog trainer, or someone. 2 yr old rescue Rotty attacked a 8 month old pup for no reason we can see. He gets along with most dogs at training, but this was out of the blue. The pup did nothing, Thor ( the Rotty ) was sniffing the pup and then he just attacked him. It shocked me, owner, and everyone else there. Pup was ok, no blood, but im seriously worried about the temperment of this rescue dog we have. Need help. Sue

Rottylover01, have you looked at the breed sub forum, Rottys? We are just Rottys here. Not sure of how old your dog is, but surely there is some way to calm and train this dog. Surely you can find one trainer who is dedicated enough to spend time with your dog to give you some hope without paying thu the nose. Patience and love goes a long way too, also domination. You must be boss. I really hope all goes well. I would give K9 a go tho. He is great. Sue

Prey Drive Control & Focus..
smokeysue replied to Steve K9Pro's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Ok Herr, Ice and i are entered in the Masters Games on Oct 7 in Qld. CCD. He is doing just fine except when on the recall. He just strolls up to me. All the other dogs are already in front of their owners and he is still coming. I have tried jumping around and in a silly voice singing come Ice and, hmm, yeah mum coming in my own good time. I asked you about 3 years ago about getting him going as he was so badly abused he was in fear drive i think. Got him over that and he really enjoys other dogs and people now,but does it in his own good time. Wont play with toys, never has. Food? Well not interested. He will do all i want but in his own time. lovely dog, but can't get him exicited. Help. -
Hi Rottiadora, yes we have been doing obedience since Feb, then started agility, and just in the last 3 weeks have been trying to get the dogs working on the other side. Well, the dogs are confused and so are we. We do obedience first then 1/2 hour break then into agility, and Ice is just getting the hang of it now being on the other side. We do one side then the other. So has taken a few weeks to get the hang of it. But most of the owners are running around the outside still with the dog still on the left. But doing both is good training for the dogs. Sue

Rspca Investigates Dog Squad's 'cruelty'
smokeysue replied to phatdex's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Didn't this start out about the ecollars and police training and RSPCA. Ok. dont know about ecollars but have you ever seen a police dog NOT happy to do his work.Always happy and adoring his trainer and loving his job. Really loving it. Not many dogs are so well fed, looked after and in such a good condition. As for the RSPCA, piss off and get real. Get rid of Hugely Worthless, and get someone who lives on this planet and doesn't want his name in the papers all the time. I think he has done so much to make this society a laughing stock. Hmm. Sue -
Ok sounds like great fun. Gympie is not too far from me, about 1 hour. Getting nice and close to us now.So i PM you to find out how much per day etc? I think Ice doesn't have a prey drive in him, but at 5 yrs of age is willing to what i want but is still a novice. Sue

Im just learning about agility, with my Rotty, and he knows jumps, tunnel. table, big jump etc. But its me. I am beside him and point and talk, but when the jumps are side by side and he has to do one then turn for the next i am in the way. He is used to being on my left side for obedience so when i turn he is still going for left side and missing jumps. Its not him its me. So we have a few misses but lots of laughs. Sue

I have to say a bit here please. We have had dogs all our married life. But we were outback in Qld, and no training clubs there. No purebreeds there either. But all our dogs were so well trained as they had to be as we had kids and sheep, roos, chooks, etc. So you do the hard work yourself when the dogs are little and we have never had a bad one.Didn't need obedience training clubs, as we did it ourselves. These dogs had to fit in our enviroment or they got the bullet. So this is my first time at obedience classes with Ice and he is 5 years old and we only started in Feb this year, and i am enjoying it so much. He was a city dog who was abused until we got him at 18 months old, so that tells you a lot about the difference between city and country.City people are too busy, country people know the dogs Must conform and be one of the family. So my bitch is, don't shoot the dogs, shoot the people. OOh, is that nasty or what. lol Sue

Ok from what the trainer tells us is just put foot on the chain close the the collar and push down while saying drop. With a treat in front as well if needed. I haven't needed it but have seen it work so well with 3 dogs. Just small pressure of the lead, and say drop and wait, bingo down they go.Do it a few times and no more pressure on lead.

I agree with you. There's been a lot of advertising going on under the cover of advice. I'm surprised the advertising hasn't been deleted. I just woke up to this fact after your post. Thanks. Sue

Nsw Rotti Fun Day - Not So Much Fun
smokeysue replied to Jefe's owners's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I asked at dog training class last week about Prong collars and no one there had seen one and most had not heard of one.We are in Qld, so apparently we don't use them here. Would like to see one tho. Sue -
I find that when i have Ice on Advantix flea treatment we have dandraff. So to compensate that i give 1 teaspoon of Cod Liver Oil each night in food. It works.Plus a tin of sardines each week. Check your flea treatment first tho. Good Luck . Sue

Still wondering what do you give your dogs as a reward. Smackoos, meat, cheese, etc. Would love to know. Sue
-
Like to know. What do you all use for food rewards? Might be intestering to compare treats. And find out what is not good for them. Cheers Sue

Hi, never used a check chain on our Rotty, only flat collar. He pulled my arm off when walking. So tried a check chain, and pulled the arm off again. Started obedience school, and have learned how to use the check chain properly without hurting him at all, and have never needed to yank it up to correct him yet. It is the noise of the chain i think, tho lots of people say, rubbish. They are not using it properly. Don't need it now. Just a flat collar. Sue

Nsw Rotti Fun Day - Not So Much Fun
smokeysue replied to Jefe's owners's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
How horrid for you on your fun day. Never seen a prong collar so don't know. But by the sounds of you, you wouldn't put anything on you fella that would hurt him. I know that in agility you must have a flat collar, and obedience a check chain. As Dr Harry says, a check chain will work because the noise from the chain pulling up will do the trick. NOT yanking their head off, this is not the idea. Why were you so upset? Certain places have their own rules and they think this is the be all and MUST be obeyed. So just for peace and to let your dog have a great day, just go with it, and then after, like now, look into it. Really sorry your day was spoiled. Sue -
I really can't help as i only started training Ice about 2 months ago and never took a treat. He was doing ok tho.Noticed the trainer saying to others there that had treats, to give them at certain times, so thought i will try that. Took them one week and gave him one when he did well etc. Next week no treats, still did well. Then noticed the next week when i took treats he was more focused on my pocket or hand than listening to me.And noticed a lot of dogs wont do what they are asked until they are bribed with a promise of a treat. Not for me. Our dogs love to please us and do not need bribery. When young maybe once or twice, but if you get them into a habit of it, then it might be= not doing this mum until you reward me..It's not right. Do not belive in treats unless given in the very right situations. Sue
