Alternatives To Nsaids
Fit for a King replied to Fit for a King's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I've had two dogs literally fall over within 15 minutes of their first dose of metacam...once I started digging overseas found it wasn;t unusual - anecdotal evidence only of course. Now am VERY reluctant to use anything like it..ie any of the COX-2 inhibitirs. Thanks Fifi will go have a look at the links and see what I can find.....looking at some of the fentanyl sites they warn against usage unless you are already an opiate user - obviously they were referring to humans but that's a worry! Will keep reading the canine specific aspetcs... -
Alternatives To Nsaids
Fit for a King replied to Fit for a King's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Thanks Golden Rules - I don't necessarily believe they are safe for all dogs short or long term. I know in my breed Metacam is contraindicated and after all I have read about negative reactions to Rimadyl I do not want to risk it. I certainly don't want a dog in pain but pain is better than dead. The vet organising the surgery (but not performing it) poo poos any suggestion that NSAIDs are unsafe - despite the warnings on the label and the consumer sheets. hence I want to be able to suggest alternatives. I'll go have a read about Fentanyl - thanks to both of you -
I do not want my vet to use Rimadyl, Metacam, Deramaxx or in fact any NSAISD for post opertaive pain and inflammation. Has anyone gone through canine TOPL or TTP surgery with an alternative? Any suggestions pls?

Would You Ring The Council?
Fit for a King replied to Yacket's Mum's topic in General Dog Discussion
YM - I would ring the council and ask them to come collect him. Then I would notify Lab Rescue that he at the pound and which one so they can contact the pound and put their names down for him if he is not collected..... [email protected] ....Lab rescue do a fabulous job! -
you should hear from another kangal breeder in the next few days......I sent her the link to this thread.....

You're welcome there are a few breeds where a particular colour cannot be registered at all - white boxers, merle chis (ie merle to merle mating), merle to merle BC, brindle pug.........

Cats In The Reception Area Of The Vets
Fit for a King replied to ruthless's topic in General Dog Discussion
at a vet the other story I had a dog on lead and another lady had a trolley of Sharpei pups - lid not on the trolley...a woman came in with a cat and tried to shove its cage under my dog's face - luckily the dog turned away and I moved to block the woman doing it again - she then got the cat out and pushed it against the bars of the trolley and when the pups started to react she dangled it in with the pups - the owner of the Peis put the top on the trolley...woman went into the surgery and the Pei owner and I looked at each other with amazwement - who on earth would be that stupid with unknown animals?? - especially as you have no idea what is wrong with any animal brought to a vet...bizarre behaviour..... -
Many boxer breeders I know PTS white puppies at birth because of the potential health risks. PF - the parti coloured poodles have a problem colour but are otherwise healthy? Not necessarily so with white boxers - congenital problems including deafness are usual which is why they are not eligible for registration. ANKC Regulations Part 6 6.2.4 White Boxers The registration of White Boxers is NOT permitted on any register. (5/05) They can still be sold but can't be registered.

Bullmastiff-cross 'bashed, Punched Then Left To Die'
Fit for a King replied to Kody's_Mum's topic in In The News
and who in their right mind and with a backbone would put the dog back to be beaten again? If the photo was re-created for the press then the inspector or whoever did it should also be charged. Surely to god the neighbour removed the chain and block when he retrieved the dog - surely to god no thinking human being would have just left it as it was - take photos by all means but take the bloody thing off him. I just hope the RSPCA don;t use him as a poster child to drum up $ then kill him because of temperament or some other excuse...... -

Experienced Vet Recommendation For Qld
Fit for a King replied to BJean's topic in Breeders Community
Annette Page is now operating out of Greenbank - she's a repo vet but jack of all trades as well. At least a little closer to the Gold Coast. I was just told about Ian so good to get another good recommendation. -
any antibiotics in all of this?

One of my guys had Advantix and a tick collar and still managed to get 2 paralysis ticks. I have changed to Frontline Plus and a different tick collar and so far so good. Fleas don;t seem to be an issue for me - just ticks.

Earwigging On A Convo At Work About Pitballs
Fit for a King replied to Heidii's topic in General Dog Discussion
did anyone ever see the episode of the People's Court when the judge was dealing with a supposed "pit bull attack" - she raved on them as "killing machines" then the numbnut lawyer that does the interviews in the crowd announced that "pitbulls have an enzyme that causes them to lock their jaws" WTF? Bloody idiot. -
As per the topic title - am seeking an email address pls.... :p

megan - are you saying that say an owner has had a dog for say 15 years and it is now riddled with all sorts of health issues and the owner doesn't want to know or pay for them that the breeder must take the dog back or be labelled unworthy? Of course there are a million other scenarios but this one has me interested.....

I have used all 3 of the above mentioned...Gary would absolutely be my first point of call..... -
Seriously I would not be feeding the dog at all until I had her back to a vet and had absolutely ascertained there is nothing else the matter with her. if she was vomitting black blood that does not sound like a mouth cut to me - her continued lethargy etc is IMO an important issue. You said lunchtime - it's already 2.45pm or are you not on EST?

Was the oncologist at Albany Creek? I took their advice and decided to try chemo treatment for an otherwise healthy young dog. I was reassured she had a 95% chance of being fine. She was dead within a week and was in a hell of a lot of pain from the treatment in that last few hours. If I could turn back time I would do nothing except keep her comfortable and happy for as long as possible and let her go when she was ready. I will never forgive myself for listening to them and will never put a dog through chemo treatment ever again. The worst part was when I rang to cancel the appointment for the following day i was asked by the receptionist if I was "sure she was dead" - I completely lost the plot at that stage and got very sarchastic - what an appalling thing to say - no I'm sure she is stiff, cold and glassy eyed because she has nothing better to do. I'll never set foot in that place again.
