Puppy Purchasers....taking Your New Puppy Home
Ons replied to ellz's topic in General Dog Discussion
lol at webdogs Onsy came with so much information about golden retreivers and his diet. She even gave me some of his food as well. tilly didnt' come with much BUT this is what means more than anything to me than any puppy pack, both breeders said that I could ring them at any time to ask any question Some of their food is handy though, when i got my kitten I tried everywhere to get the food that she was being fed and couldn't find it anywhere so had to ask the breeder for some which wasn't a problem - Zinnia was flown down and the food was taped on the top of her cage -
that sounds positive all the best to you and Digi

I never really thought kelpies as show dogs as well as working dogs, just thought of them on farms as working dogs. No reason why at all. They are really beautiful dogs, I just love the old ones, they look so wise. Do they have an off switch though, are they happy to lounge around with the owners when they are louging around (provided they got enough exercise of course) or do they have to be on the "go" all the time?

For peace of mind I would be putting him in a good boarding kennel for the last couple of weeks. But go a bit further out of town, cheaper and I would think that the runs would be bigger which is better for a longer term stay. My kennel only charges $50.00 a day and that's for 2 big dogs, 1 medium dog and 3 cats, Bit far for you though this kennel My working dog jumped the fence when i was in the front garden once - I yelled at him to get back over and he did so immediately and he never jumped the fence again - he was a rescue dog that just wants to please me so much. I was very very lucky.

Onslow, Tilly and Flash think that it is fine to feed chicken thigh - Ons enjoyed two for his dinner tonight and Tilly and Flash one each Hyacinth the cat got hers steamed and the chicken shredded from it for her dinner (the dogs got the juices on top of their biscuits). Violet and Zinnia cats think that anything unless it comes out of a little expensive tin is poison and turned their noses up at beautifully cooked chicken thigh Thighs are good value too :-) but thanks for the tip about the fat, I'll notice that more next time

that's great news about Bub and I hope he continues to improve. as for tips, i don't really have any, i gave onsy some milk and some oil to see if things would get moving and they did. I also just laid with him on the bed stroking him and just trying to destress him. He was quite unwell and upset to the extent that he actually had come into the bedroom and woke me up to "tell" me. If we did have an emergency vet nearby I would have taken him. I also kept the side door open for him so he would have access to outside at all times and not stress about that. by the next morning he was looking a bit better and had "movement". But he was still not his normal self for a couple of days so I kept him quietly and was going to take him to the vets but he improved dramatically. As my pets' vet is over 100 kms away I do tend to not rush them there (unless of course it is an accident or they are very very ill) but keep an eye on them. .

Starved Rescue Pups And Teaching Manners With
Ons replied to Trisven13's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
my last foster coolie Lizzy was like this and attacked every dog or cat in the kitchen when food was being prepared, she had been starved. Normally she was a very sweet natured girl. simple solution was that she was always put in the garage before meals were made and fed in the garage away from the others. Over time she settled very quickly especially when she learnt that no matter what 2 good meals a day were still provided to her. Having said that TOT is a wonderful method and I would try that as well. I just think that once pup knows that food is going to be on a regular basis that the food agression may well ease. -
Maybe a drip was an overkill for constipation but the original post didn't mention that Bub was throwing up as well so certianly a drip in those circumstances may not have been overcautious. Bub if little Bub is okay I would bring him home and watch him during the night, if he is not better in the morning take him back to the vets. It's horrible when they are sick, Onsy my male golden retriever woke me up a few months ago at 2 am because of similar problems but where I live there is no emergency vet nearby. I nursed him all night and gave him some things to get his bowel moving and he was fine, thank goodness. But we were both exhausted and didn't do much that day - lucky it was a Sunday.

this seemed a good article about what TPLO is, I had no idea! http://www.vetsurgerycentral.com/tplo.htm

My sister emailed me last night concerned about her border collie. He is about five. It appears that Cody hurt his back leg at Christmas time whilst at the beach. He became lame that night so my sister took him to the vet. The vet put him on anti inflams and it got better, but a few weeks later it was sore again. This time the vet did xrays etc and although nothing showed up thought it was a partial tear in the cruciate ligament. My sister decided on conservative treatment so weight loss, exercise program and carprofen injections, This seemed to work but a couple of nights ago there was a storm and when they let him inside he bolted up and down the stairs and the next morning the leg was sore again. A couple of days on anti inflams and he is still not right, zooming around and jumping on it most of the time but when eating he is not weight bearing on it at all and when quietly walking there is a definite limp. The vet has suggested taking him to a specialist and getting TPLO surgery done. This will cost about thousands which my sister has no problems about because he is such a loved dog. Her concern is having to keep him quiet for about 6 weeks for it to heal, crated for about 2 weeks. Cody is such an active dog and she is not sure how she can manage this and how he will cope. The question is does any one have any experience with convalescence after this type of surgery with active dogs? If so, do they have any hints on making his life more bearable during it? also I'm sure any other input about the surgery and perhaps if anyone says that they would only allow x vet to do the surgery would be helpful too, she is in Melbourne. Many thanks

I'm so sorry to hear that you are going through this :D always remember quality of life rather than quantity When my darling Daisy RIP was at the end I decided if she started having more bad days than good days it was time. But in fact she had a good two weeks and then she went so rapidly downhill and the vet said to try stronger and stronger drugs and it wasn't fair to her that I knew it was time. Hugs to you
