  3. my heart dogs, I will never be with out one in my life. Even people like my Dad who say they don't like dogs comment about how beautiful and obedient my Flashy is. As soon as I have my acerage I'm going to get myself a chocolate coolie as well I can't compare them with a kelpie, I don't know enough about kelpies. But I have met lots of coolies. Some can be quite shy but I think it's how you socialise them. As for brightness and obedience, Flashy is wonderful. He sticks to my side like glue, always has to know where I am. If I go out the front he can come too because i know one command and he will be back at my side, the retreivers would be running up the road. But before he goes out the front door with me he always hesitates and makes sure that's what I'm told him he is allowed to do. He knows his mummy can be a bit "dipsy" at times and just checks. He seems to just comprehend things without me explaining them to him and one stern "Flash" makes him stop. Just wants to please as much as possible. I haven't done any formal training with him but would love too, just not really facilities here. He can be alot brighter than me at times, if I give him another dog's bowl he won't eat out of it and I wonder why then realise it's not his red bowl. I have to give him permission then to eat the food because normally one of the retrievers has by that stage demolished the contents of the red bowl. He has adapted well to living at my place. I understand that this is a general trait of a coolie that they adapt well to their circumstances. One thing I do find is that he has to always know what is going on with everything, including myself, the other 2 dogs and the 3 cats and most of all he has to make sure that the 3 cats and the male dog are behaving themselves. He seems to let Tilly get away with whatever she wants, they are the bestest of mates interestingly he finds the present foster dog great fun to run around the yard with but won't let Tilly play with him and herds him away He loves lying on myself or one of the other dogs but he is very protective of me and my other animals. Everynight he has to snuggle as close to me as possible for his bedtime cuddle then happily moves away to sleep unless it's cold. Loves kids although not had a great deal to do with them he adores it when they come visiting. He also likes most people, I think he was a victim of cruelty before I adopted him so he is cautious about some people and petrified of brooms. He adores my friend who owns lots of coolies, if we are ever at her place he will be sitting beside me and as soon as I leave the room he goes racing over and jumps on her lap, it is very funny and just shows how he wants to be loyal to me. I could talk all day about coolies but best get back to work - lol
  4. it's a nice website i don't know why that cattledog is marked as cattledog x, looks like it's all cattledog to me and i can't see coolie in the dog of the week, nice dog though! i think maybe because it had blue eyes? But other dogs have blue eyes
  5. poor dogs, RIP I'm thinking that there may have been something wrong with the man and he may not have understood what he was signing, just a thought from reading that he lived in a broken down bus and has so many dogs.
  6. Then you would be discounting a lot of 'pure breeds' then. These 'breeds' are not ANKC recognised to my knowledge; Mini Foxy Koolie American Bulldog White Shepherds Curly Coated Retriever (not 100%v sure on this one... I am sure someone will advise me of those I am wrong on anyway ) American Water Spaniel and many, many, many others. To my knowledge though, all of the above are recognised under other registries. I was going to say coolie as well but you had it there, some spell it with a c, some with a k. And two breeders I know who breed coolies do so what would be considered ethically if they were ANKC breeders. I think, but I'm not 100% sure, that curly coated retreivers are ANKC recognised, but Murry River coated retrievers (Or a name like that) aren't
  7. i'm very sorry to hear of your loss Rip Buddy
  8. that's unbelievable! i'm always paranoid at the vets that there could be dogs there that are infectious and so keep mine (on the lead of course) close to me. yet this one just lets her dog go up to another dog mine have had a couple of accidents there as well and i've always asked for a mop i can't believe that people would take a cat not in a cat cage, they must enjoy being scratched to pieces!
  9. I have the most beautiful 11 month old foster blue cattle dog pup here who has had no training. i'm working hard on the jumping up and he is a bright fellow, learns quickly. When I'm home my dogs are allowed inside and are normally quiet and well behaved, but I can't have Banjo inside as he bounces around and chases the cats. So i feel very mean but he is outside alot whilst mine are inside because I don't believe in altering their routine because we have a foster dog in the house. Banjo is very good and just sits quietly by the side door looking in or wandering around the garden, at the moment he is playing with the stuffed pet pig toy, not making a sound. I have the crate set up and he is allowed in provided he is in the crate or on a lead. He does generally sit quietly in his crate or by my side on the lead. But i don't like the idea of him being in the crate for hours on end so I put him outside. Today he had a good long sleep in his crate but then became restless so we all went outside, had a play and the three spoilt brats came inside whilst he stayed out. At night he sleeps quietly in the garage, he really is a good boy except for the cat/inside bit. So any ideas how I can get him to behave inside and not chase the cats everytime he sees them? Or should i just continue on what I'm doing with the belief that Banjo couldn't care less about where the three spoilt brats are? I do know that I'm never going to get him to never chase a cat, I just dont want him to react like he does everytime he sees one of them.
  10. coolies are really adaptable to their owners lifestyles and my understanding is do well in obedience training, agility and dog sports they just want to please their owner. i have never owned a more loyal obedient dog than my Flash. There just isn't anywhere to take him for any training though where i live

  12. That wouldn't be so bad, IMO. I'd love it if kennels would see their way to accepting Titre tests as an alternative to mandatory annual vaccination. I accept titre tests at my kennel...... now that the AVA has accepted it. We do too, although in the past 18 months have never had anyone ask! I did mean this, just worded it badly! What i meant was a dog that has never had a vacination, my understanding is that dogs who are titre tested have had vacinations and have built up the immunity so don't need regular vacinations because they are immuned. I could be wrong i'm always telling my mum to get her 12 year old cavalier titre tested instead of injecting her each year. she doesn't listen though

  14. also make sure that the kennels only accept dogs that have had vacinations, a few sadly don't.
  15. unfortunately at times we do have to leave our beloved pets in kennels mine have all coped well, Tilly was less than five months when she had to stay for a few weeks because I had to move towns for work and didn't have anywhere for us to live, she had a great time and still loves going to the kennels The three of them went to kennels for just over 3 weeks a couple of years ago when i went overseas. I was also concerned about them particularly Flashy who had been rescued from death row only a couple of months before. They were all fine, got terribly spoilt, pleased to see me but not at all traumatised by their stay away. these are dogs who sleep on my bed as well. and she won't be alone at night, she will have all her new friends in the kennels next door (don't go for a kennel where she will have to share) it will be like a big sleep over party for her once she gets to know everyone
  16. i needed some flea treatment for Flash urgently so went to my vets. it was $118 but she offered it to me for $87.00 as she says that she knows that i normally get it off the internet and she was sorry couldn't go any lower than that. it was actually the same price as vetpetdirect without paying for postage. my suggestion is go and ask the vets if they will give it to you for the same price, worth a try and take the internet prices in. Ann did look on line before she told me what I could have it for.
  17. oh that is so cute! katie can be a poster girl for those who are put off having a newfi coz of the drool - she has the solution!

  19. there's a lovely lady near me who runs an animal shelter from her home in the november heatwave she found a box near her front gate as she came home from work someone had put five puppies in there and taped the box shut two of the puppies were already dead all the ************ scumbag had to do was ring Jean and say they had these puppies, not leave them in a box to die
  20. round these parts she probably would be sold as a genuine 'pig dog' and used to go hunting pigs so i'd say she has some of the hunting breeds in her She is gorgeous though - what a big girl she will be!
  21. I'm very sorry to hear this RIP Flash
