  1. I use ADVANTIX on both my dogs , and NO FLEAS !!! , i use to frontline , but still had a mild flea problem . so i switched over to advantix and wella ' . But as everyone has been saying what works for some , may not work for you . Just use what has been working for you .
  2. evidently he trains australian shepherds over in the usa . i have been getting those emails too , majority of them land in my junk folder.
  3. Yes it great fun !!! infact my dad has offered to take in one of my dogs in the herding ring on sunday !
  4. i must add , it is normal for a young of any breed to go through a change of coat around this age, as they are loosing puppy coat and the adult coat is coming through . The old coat is usually dull and dry , this is usually normal . When my girl was going the change of coat at that age , i actually thought her coat was bleached until her breeder told me otherwise . as this gives the dull , dry look . , And there is nice coat coming up underneath. Kelly
  5. i am doing herding training on sunday with my australian sheps !!
  6. its only reasonably new that could be why , not many vets no about it . I had to show my vet the info on it , as some aussies have a drug sensitivity to some heartworm products.
  7. there is a drug allergy , dna test now !! , as some dogs have drug sensitivity .
  8. i use Clicker and food , i still use food now with my girl and she is in OPEn Obedience ( trialling dog ) , my boy i use clicker with food . Guess you never phase food out , but just use less once the dog is reliable in what you have taught the dog.
  9. Linky link  Triangle of Temptation The dog also needs to learn to accept food taken from the mouth .
  10. What you do is ........ With the chicken wing ( keep rewards on you or just praise ) , take bone from his mouth , than instantly say " good boy " , than give back bone , do this often , daily infact. I have done this with my dogs , as i had a problem with my ACD exactly what the problem you are having , but he was older. So i learnt from him . Now i can take anything from my dogs mouthes without my hand being bitten off! Get other to do this too , after you have mastered it . Wont take too long , b4 pup realises that food taken from him isn't such a bad thing . Good Luck
  11. how old is puppy ??? and have you being teaching the pup to accept food being taken of him and being rewarded for good behaviour.
  12. I agree with nehkbet here ... I hate to say it . But you were kinda tempting fate here. You have obviously learnt from this as you are asking for help , which is good. Kelly
  13. i took both my dogs to puppy preschool , mind you i had the obedience training to the advantage of others . but we had fun , the pups enjoyed interacting with each other , they even got meet the vet hosps pet cat ! . I would definately go again with my next pup , when i get one . Damn aussies are addictive :p
  14. my club has being using food for training for over 10 yrs .
  15. your pup is just testing the limits of the older dogs, if they dont like what the pup is doing . they will soon tell the pup off without hurting the pup. Obedience training could help . But i would really let the pup be , and really would 'nt intervere with it. JMO kelly
  16. But, if food is this dog's favourite motivator, what good is the "click" if it can't be paired with something the dog REALLY enjoys? I'm more surprised that this training school does not permit rewarding with food treats (assuming this proves to be the dog's favourite motivator) than I am that they insist on check chains. And Staffyfreak, a verbal marker, applied with good timing and voice, can be just as valuable to the dog if trained in the same way as one would a clicker, IMO. It also leaves your hand free to reward the dog with a prey toy (eg. rope bone) if your dog perceives such an item as 'fun'. exactly, clicker training is used in conjunction with food
  17. just stick to your guns , if you feel the positive motivational training is the way to go , than do it ! no one can force you into doing something that you dont to do.
  18. NO you dont !! There are other ways to train a dog , even the police force are now using positive reinforcement with there training regime with their dogs . If you dont like there methods and the club are not willing to except your rights , change clubs!
  19. come on , if you worry about every single bit of food , you would not use anything at all. I use devon ( human grade ) , . sometimes schmackoes , liver treats , and also kangaroo sausages etc.
  20. it will be ok , besides most showies use it as bait .
  21. Unless the vet has already recommended it , i would feed her food that is low in protein and sodium. IE; Hills Science DIet Senior.
  22. I use Purina Proplan Performance on my guys. I either get the breeders pack or the 17kg bag.
  23. have ago at obedience too , also freestyle dancing. and thats lots more out there you can do.
  24. i use flaxseed oil capsules and zinc tab ( human type ) , this has helped in easing my dogs scratching . my dogs weight is 18 - 24kg, i adminster with their feeds 3 flaxseed capsules and 1 zinc tab . daily.
