Watching this thread with interest as I was walking the 4 dogs (all on leads) and had another dog come right up to the point when i had my leg in front of its head to stop it coming any closer. The stupid owner (and yes I think she is a tool) kept saying 'but he's friendly'. In the end I said to her that if she didnt call her dog off I was going to kick it in the head, at which point she got huffy and grabbed her dog. My dogs are reasonably friendly, but I dont like the chances of no-one getting hurt if there was a scuffle. I had mine off to the side of the track to give her room to pass too. Tossers!!!!

When Are You Classified A Crazy Dog Owner....
piperspal replied to Beaglelover:)'s topic in General Dog Discussion
You know you are a crazy dog lady when you are following one of your dogs down the street with a saucepan in hand trying to get a urine sample..... -
He is so natural with the dogs and I am sure they can feel the love that comes out of him, well done Jack on the nomination!!!!!!
-
Thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated. I am leaning towards not having him done unless they can prove to me that it will improve his quality of life. the dribbling isnt constant 'yet', and as he is an outside dog is not a problems to me. The enlarged prostate will be what decides it, once I get a urine sample off him. Thats going to be fun, wait until the neighbours see me chasing him with a saucepan up the street.....They already think i'm nuts!!!!! LOL I also figure that it wont help his arthritis any, and he is the correct weight for his size now, so dont see the point of putting him through the stress.
-
Thanks guys, I was not sure it would be worth it as he is an outside dog, so really can dribble where he wants, I was more worried about if he would survive a GA. He's pretty healthy, just the arthritis slows him down but he has tablets for that. All the other dogs are desexed, he has always been the odd one out....

Heres the background - took all my dogs to the vet a couple of weeks ago for a checkup and thier vaccs, and asked if there was anything that I would be able to give the oldest dog for his incontinence. He is not full blown leaving-a-trail-everywhere incontinent, but when he whines or sneezes yes there is a wet patch. The vet checked him over and aside from being able to lose a couple of kilos (and that is all it is) he is in good shape, teeth good, getting a bit worn, suffers from arthritis but otherwise fine. She checked his prostate (that got me a dirty look from the dog) and said it was enlarged and that I should consider desexing him. When I asked if that would stop the dribble, she stated 'probably not'. My question is, he is a 9 year old large dog, would it 1 - be safe, and 2 worth it? My first reaction was 'lady get off the grass -are you trying to kill him?' but maybe it would be worth it. I still have to take in a urine sample to make sure that he doesnt have an infection, thats the next trick, getting him to go when I want him to....

Walking My Dog But Surrounding Dog Not On Leash
piperspal replied to giraffez's topic in General Dog Discussion
If I think another dog is going to have a go at me or mone(keep in mind I walk 4 at once, from tiny to large size) the only way I have of fending off an attack is to take the lead off the big dog, and use the clip as a weapon. I can hang onto his collar and the leads of the other dogs in one hand and swing hte other lead in my other hand, makes a hell of a thunk on the top of a dogs head when I have it going...... I have been known to use the lead made especially for him (d-shackle, length of chain and a clip) when just walking him, amazing what it will stop if my adrenaline is going... Mind you I also have a 'i'm serious voice' that usually stops any dogs in thier tracks, has been known to make a few owners back up as well. -
And some more Running in to get the kong. You shall not pass!!!!!!!!! Still chasing.... Such a little spunk!!!!!

It has been a busy couple of weeks so I am finally getting a chance to put some more photos up of Milo. His new name is 'Milo the brave', he has just managed to finally make it all the way up the stairs, no mean feat for such a little man!!!!! We may have a longer time to wait for him to manage to go down, as he gets too fast and his back end starts to overtake his front end LOL. I took him out the other morning and got some shots of him and Piper enjoying some early morning chasies and ball hunting....... enjoy!!!! Milo took the kong and wouldn't get off the bed, Piper is too polite, she waits for him to get bored and leave whatever it is he has taken....... Magnum hiding in the laundry.... Addy having some 'solar therapy' early in the morning. Heading in off the grass, wet feet you know..... Piper trying to get around him from behind.

Paw Pad Conditioning For Roadwork?
piperspal replied to Staranais's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
When we were Pigging (long before my DOL days) we used to rub colourless iodine on teh pads every couple of days, it would harden them up. We had one dog who would run his pads off, and with that it was fine, he had no problems after that. -
Thats great news, i dont often post in your threads but always check to see how he is going. Wonderful news for you and your family and Emmy too, she will have her big brother to guide her for a long time.

Thank DOG its not just me!!!! I though Addy was broken, she is such a stubbon thing all the time. I would like to think she had some motivation somewhere, and I just have to find it, but after 7 years I'm still looking...... When I say sit, she will look away as if to say "i'm bored, get on with it'. When we go for a walk, she 'has' to be in front, so as soon as she pulls on the lead I stop and make everyone sit (yes the first 500m on the walk take a looong time to cover) she can take up to a minute of me asking her, pushing her into position etc for her to obey. Yet when we get home she is the first dog to sit and have her halti removed.......so she knows the command, she chooses not to do it. She will only come when called if the other dogs come, or I put on my 'I'm serious' voice...... yet she is the most loving soft dog i've ever known. She resource guards everything, and I mean everything, she is currently guarding the bag of Dynamic Lifter that I bought home the other day. She does food, her bed (to the point where I will go and drag her off it and give it to the big dog, or he will drag her off and remind her who the boss is), us, she doesnt 'do' toys thank goodness........
-
Now that is is cold, the poddle will wait until I take my dressing gown off to go to bed. I then lay it on the end of hte bed, she jumps up and lays on it and I fold the rest if it back over her and tuck in the edges. When the OH come in he picks up the whole bundle and moves it to the end of my side of the bed, half the time she wont even stick her head out to see why she is being moved.....

Large Dogs And Small Dogs Living Together?
piperspal replied to ash&elar's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have a 65kg Rotti X, a 25kg Whippet X and a toy poodle 5kg. They all get on fine as they know that I am the leader and if I say the dog is in 'our pack' they better get used to it. the dog I have to watch is the mid sized one, she does not like strange dogs and will growl and get all huffy if I bring in a new dog (usally when friends go away). However she knows that if anything happens to the new dog I will be coming down on them like a ton of bricks. And the big dog will tell her off as well, he is so laid back and casual, I have had entire males (my poodles brother) staying and he used his paw to flatten the little dog once, looked at it and walked away........ the boy (his name was noodles) decided from then on that his new hero was my big boy, and they were inseperable. The big boofa will let the poodle steal from him when he has a bone etc, he knows she doesn't eat much . However I supervise because of the middle dog, she is a nasty thing when she resource guards.... -
Welcome back and good to see you are on the mend!

What Does Your Dog Do That Makes You Laugh?
piperspal replied to fiveplusone's topic in General Dog Discussion
I know what you mean, I have a toy poodle that 'pounces' me when I get near the top of the stairs at home. its a game we have done for ages, I will see her and freeze, she starts to stalk me. then I 'run away' and she gets to pounce. The outside dogs also crack me up, the middle sized one 'bounces', when I go out, she is excited and wants to run around, but not get too far away, so she bounces, her front and back feet are side by side and she goes along sideways. The big dog, he just cracks me up when he lies on his back and holds his tennis ball with his front feet, he then sucks it like a baby. Funny when you think he weighs 60kgs. -
I use trapw when I can, but have also had great success with a bait called 'pestmaster'. It does not ahrm the dogs in any way, my poodle has been the culprit in eating the bait straight from the box (who knew she could get under the fridge, go figure) with no side effects. I have them set out all the time near the dog food etc. We have a plague in Alice at the moment, and this weekend the war will begin, not happy at having mice in my cupboards.....

I Am Eating An Ice Cream Sandwich....
piperspal replied to Dame Aussie's topic in General Dog Discussion
My toy poodle has a thing for white chocolate, she is ball obsessed and will leave the ball if she thinks you have a white tim tam....... other wise they all share what we have, that will be changing soon as I get chooks tho lol. I have had her stand on me when i am eating on the lounge (naughty I know) and stare at me, we joke that 'its an old poodle mind trick.........you will give me the food.......' lucky shes small. The other 2 boofas are outside so we can sneak food past them.... -
Dont forget there are other towns in the NT other than Darwin, Alice is nice, plenty of work and the caravan parks are great.

Hi Guys, I have 3 dogs at home at the moment, a 9 year old rotty cross, 7 year old whippet cross and 5 year old toy poodle. The problems that seems to be developing at the moment is when I take them out for a walk (all together, otherwise the one left behind will howl) the 7 year old wants to attack other dogs that we see. This has been getting worse and worse to the point where I am going to start leaving her home as she is starting to ruin the excitement of a walk. She is the most vocal one in regards to a walk, and will (literally) scream at the door as soon as I come downstairs in the afternoon. As an example, we will be walking along, they are on a loose lead, althought she always has to be in the front. Anyway, if I see another dog coming towards us I will move the 3 off the path, make them sit and wait for the dog to pass. She is really bad for sitting (she gives that look that says 'what, you mean me, surely not' and will look away) so I make her look at me and ask her again and she will sit. However as soon as I release them to walk on, she tries to dive behind me and chase the other dog. I walk her in a halti as otherwise she pulls like a frieght train. She will then spend the next 50 meters or so dragging behind trying to get at the other dog, then barrels through to get to the front. I make a point of not letting her go out the front when she gets too pushy, keeping the lead short and making her be the last of the dogs, but franky she is p*ng me off with the attitude. In all other aspects she is lovely, she is incredibly loving, but very jealous, can be really ignorant esp when she is barking, and tends to guard things too intensely (eg no dog can get near the bag of dynamic lifter when she is around lol). Amazingly, if I bring another dog into our yard, she is the one that goes and hides and avoids the other dog. We 'think' the other half of her cross is a dingo, we haven't had that confirmed as it is not that important to us, but could this make a difference to her attitude, I have never met a dog like her. She has such an arrogant nature about her, unlike the other dogs. I have had dogs all my life, from working dogs to pets to pund rescues, so am usally unfazed by anything but she has got me beat! If anyone has any suggestions that would enable us to keep walking together, it would be great, at the moment I dont want to walk her as she is annoying me too much.lol When we started to walk she was fine, it has been getting worse and we have not had any bad experiences while out walking as I dont let them off the lead.

OMG, she is stunning, I love boxers, they are on my list of next dogs to get....

I read it as being Labrador cross Labrador x retriever. So one parent is pure and one is a cross, maybe I read it wrong....

I'm a probation officer, soon to be licencing inspector.... Magnum (Big Boofa) would be a policeman or youth worker - calm, unflappable and holds his line when trouble hits. Addy - (dingo x) would be a socialite - always seeking attention. Piper - (poodle) would be a therapist - knows when to make you laugh and knows when to just put her head on your shoulder and sigh.
