Add a sprinkle of psyllium husks to his meals every day, this reduces anal gland problems. I had a dog with a lot of anal gland problems until I did this, never had them again. I would also think about adding some carbs. Good luck.

Help Need To Blacken A Winter/snow Nose
carabelle replied to roughstock's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yes Petcetera had this at the weekend, I posted under the other topic - its brilliant, hope you can manage to get some. Cara -
Hi, speaking from experience (bichons and other white showdogs) there is really nothing that will remove the stains immediately, but this will help greatly - firstly wash the areas affected with plenty of Sunlight laundry soap (got to be laundry not the other type), then apply the best whitening shampoo E-Z Groom Crystal White Shampoo, available at Petnetwork and Petcetera, do not use purple shampoos as they will leave a tinge to the coat. You can PM me for further instructions on how to best use the shampoo if you wish. Best of luck to your friend.

I have done this for over 30 years for both dogs and cats and never had a problem yet. If you do not have to have children/adults vaccinated every year why would you have to have dogs and cats - never made any sense to me. My good friend is a virolugist and has always done the same with her furkids. Carabelle

That's a gorgeous Happy Pappy you have there. I have Papillons, I don't feed beetroot itself but beet pulp is in some kibbles, but really don't know if it exacerbates the problem. Papillons will often have running eyes, usually fixes itself as they mature. I usually just wipe the eyes a couple of times a day, tried all the tear stain solutions and found that Kojo works the best to lessen the staining but you can just use warm salted water and pat dry with a soft cloth, if you do this regularly (usually twice a day) it will gradually disappear. Bests Ways To Prevent Constipation In Dogs
carabelle replied to kyeesha's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I use the psyllium husks also, as the dogs are toys I give a few sprinkle a couple of times a week, have done so for years and have had no issues with constipation. You can purchase psyllium husks in the health food section of the supermarket. Carabelle -

I had this problem with one of my dogs last year, the tube cost $45 and corrected the dry eye really quickly, did not have to use the whole tube. Good luck. -
Snow Nose - Any Suggestions?
carabelle replied to carabelle's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Many thanks Ellz and Luv my White Shepherd (so you should, white shepherds are beautiful!) I will follow up with your recommendations. I have mated this boy to a bitch who does not have this issue, puppies due in the next few days. Much appreciated Carabelle -
Snow Nose - Any Suggestions?
carabelle replied to carabelle's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Thank you , I never feed out of plastic bowls. Just found Ironcyclen on the net, how much would you give a 2.5kg dog please? The other 8 dogs (4 related) don't have this problem and this one is outside most of the day. Carabelle -
Snow Nose - Any Suggestions?
carabelle replied to carabelle's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Snow nose is when the pigment on the nose fades in the winter months. -
Does anyone have suggestions on how to get rid of 'snow nose'. One of my dogs has this issue every winter, I have been told to feed kelp which I do but to no avail, perhaps I am not feeding enough? Any suggestions will be appreciated. Carabelle

You can try Paw Paw ointment made by Lucas, you can buy it in the supermarket and it is a safe antiseptic for dogs and helps heal quickly. Our friend who is a chemist swears by it for cuts and grazes.

I have been using it as backup for some time, my toys love it, I feed kibble and home-cooked with additives, and use 4 legs about once a fortnight. I cut the balls in half for the smaller dogs.

Thanks for this informaiton sandgrubber, I was considering this implant for one of my adult non-show dogs who is somewhat hyperactive (a family inheritance), thought it might calm him down a bit but after reading this will not pursue as I may want to breed with him later. I'll keep him at obedience where he is doing pretty well of late and he loves it.

Why Does My Puppy's Breath Smell Like A Bum?
carabelle replied to BittyMooPeeb's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hi BittyMooPeeb (love the name) My reference is Juliette de Bairacli Levy 'Complete Herbal Handbook for the Dog and the Cat', and the dosage was for a puppy affected with worms. As the book was written some time ago it would not be a metric teaspoon rather imperial teaspoon which is somewhat smaller and would probably equal a 1/2 teaspoon metric tightly packed, so a little more than those reference you have found. Let me know if you would like any further information from the book, you can PM me. Best of luck with your little one. -
I have a dog who suffers from pancreatitis, I feed her a natural diet (lean meat/chicken/fish, cooked vegetables, occasional grated raw carrot and some rice or pasta) and add a sprinkle of psyllium husks and some finely chopped parsley to her meals most days. She has done very well on this diet with no recurring attacks. When first diagnosed I added enzymes to her meals and then replaced them with the psyllium after a month or so. Your mother's girl looks very good for her age, I hope her health improves.

Why Does My Puppy's Breath Smell Like A Bum?
carabelle replied to BittyMooPeeb's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Re the slippery elm - the dose for a puppy is roughly a heaped teaspoon mixed in hottish water, you can add some natural honey to make it more palatable, and cool down. You will need to give at least twice a day for at least 3 days. You may also want to think about adding some finely chopped parsley to the puppy's meals it may help with digestion and soothe the stomach but I would only feed light foods while you are administering the slippery elm. Besides those already mentioned, another possible ailment could be an ulcerated stomach due to the worm infestation. Best wishes for dear the little one, and I hope she continues to thrive and grow strong in your care. -
Thanks for the contact information booboo, I think Eagle Pack is a great product my lot really love the biscuits.

Thank you for posting the article Blackfoot. I agree with Miranda, we have always limited vaccinations for our dogs and cats over the past 20 years as we felt ongoing booster vaccinations were unnecessary, after all humans do not require yearly vaccinations against identified diseases. All of our dogs and cats have lived to very old age (some 19+) with no major health issues, so assume we were doing the right thing. It is comforting to know that others have followed this strategy to good effect and now appears to be confirmed as the correct approach. As I now have a puppy in obedience training I am also concerned about the ongoing requirement for proof of annual vaccination and when this will be reviewed. It is not an issue now or for the next 12 months for us but obviously of concern to those with older dogs.

The ones that I tried were small packs about 1.5kg which could have been samples as at that time the store where I purchase Eagle Pack was a new stockist. Lately I have only seen and bought the large packs. Carabelle

Hi Mickatie I have tried quite a few of the Eagle Pack varieties and mine have fared better on the holistic, even my older dogs who do not like biscuits really like this one. Perhaps you can do a taste test trial and let us all know LOL. Carabelle

I cannot use Aloveen or Episoothe on my bitch who has itchy skin, it makes it so very much worse. I use Malasab which works well for her and baby shampoo on her head and ears. Good luck.

Hi joysseven One of my toy dogs had a number of colitis attacks (even though the food was low fat and no treats) until I started to give psyllium - since then she has had no problems at all and has been back on normal food for more than 6 months with no signs of the problem resurfacing. I feed homecooked plus some Eagle Pack biscuits. I now also give my other dogs a sprinkle of psyllium on their meals each night. Good luck Carabelle

Hi Spikey I give my toy dog phenergan on an occasional basis, she is around 4kg and I give her 1/2 tablet twice a day, it really helps her. I think she has a grass allergy (undiagnosed as most allergies seem to be) and has recently been reacting to oatmeal shampoo which was not a problem before. I also use aloe vera to good effect on any scratch marks. I was speaking to a friend who has a dog that scratches all the time now matter what she has tried, her vet thinks it may be due to the heartworm vaccination she had some time ago - food for thought. My dog has not had the heartworm injection but the allergies run in her lines. Best of luck I know how frustrating this can be for both the dog and you. Carabelle
