  1. Welcome to DOL BichonCrazy  Rick Berwick is lovely I haven't met Katherine but they take beautiful care of their Bichons. You can call dogswest for their number i think, or they might be on DOL. Here you are Dupanache Bichons
  2. My setters couldn't give a rats... nothing phases those two... Ari learned from them... she didn't care at all about storms... that is until earlier this year when we had quite a loud and sudden clap of thunder right over us. We were outside at the time and well... it was close. I actually don't blame her to be honest it scared the crap out of me too. Thing is, she was panting and upset all afternoon, we didn't pay much attention to her, and the other dogs were fine... but ever since then she shakes and carries on during a storm. I still try to ignore her, but it's hard when all she does is try to hide under you and shake and carry on.
  3. if it's anything like WA, it's hard work... but one of our rules is that you need to have the "club" in place at least 12 months prior to applying for affiliation, as well has having a certain number of paying members... try looking on the website for guidelines, or contact DogsSA directly and ask for what you want... they should have the info accessible, so ask them to email it to you.
  4. I woke up from the rain at 4am but didn't hear the thunder except for one... you poor thing AP you must be a very light sleeper!!
  5. yes i certainly have some interesting names for mine... except Ari... she doesn't really have one yet! Spartan also goes by the name Swan, Spartonia, Swanson and Swansonite... James is Jimmy, cricket, and most recently Jibba!
  6. IMO it's all about what you can handle as well as the current dog/s... I waited until my first dog was 4 before getting another... and imo i coped fine but he didn't cope that well being that he had been an only dog for 4 years. I got my third dog when my second was just 14 months old... but at 14 months my second was a well behaved dog, and I felt that it'd be fine, and that the younger two could then leave my older one be a little...
  7. Did you buy the one from the weekend RS? i haven't watched it yet...
  8. I hope Beans is better soon Ptolomy... Wazzat I plan to be there... although not 100% at this stage... ValleyCBR poor Lincoln... make sure you take a photo!
  9. Only rare and elusive if people are breeding for quality. If they are breeding specifically for blue, the pups will be neither rare or elusive. It doesn't take skill or good fortune to buy two blue dogs, put them in a pen together and pump out a litter of blue pups. ok... the perception is that they are rare...
  10. How very sad - poor Jed I hope she is ok She must be truly devastated.
  11. Is it just me or does the "blue" have a different shape ear?? Seems longer and more rounder at the tip. Oh dear, let's hope that weis are not going to be the next "breed" to have those elusive expensive "blues". I thought that too, it's got ears the size of bedsheets. That blue "weimaraner" is young... hence it's large ears... normal weis also have ears the size of dumbos when they are pups... Everything about blue weis is the same as weimaraners... except their colour. They look probably a little more poorly bred, because they are in most cases, a BYB. Blue weis, since one left germany and was accepted by the AKC (and apprarently German Klubb, but then the acceptance was later revoked), have been bred on purpose... like someone else here said, it is not genetically possible for a blue wei to crop up in a litter of greys if the parents are both grey. It then says that people have bred this colour on purpose even after the Weimaraner club of America banned the registering of this colour. There are quite a number of "working" weims that are bred and many are blue... they can argue that colour doesn't matter, and it doesn't... however it does not depart from the fact thta there are blues being bred because like in so many other breeds, it's rare and elusive... The debate is strong, particularly in the US, about the acceptance of blue weims... i sit on the fence because after all, the LH weimaraner was in a similar position in Germany not that long ago either...
  12. yeah i am pretty inspired too!! now if only i can get Ari to pick up stuff from the ground!! mason did really well - he is great particularly in water!! such an awesome swimmer! and Ruby was a STAR!!! they all think she is nearly ready for a trial... that is pretty inspiring!!
  13. I voted yes, but there would have to be exemptions... for example if there is a medical reason for which it would be in the dogs best interest to remain entire, and also might have to be breed/size specific... I wouldn't desex a large breed until after 12 months.
  14. Oh no!!! Not the day of the gundog show!!! Dammit... if it was any other show, i'd skip it and go to retrieving, but i'm on the committeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!
  15. I am hoping to get there... Wish you could come too valley :D i got loads of tips from the owner of Ari's dam when I was over there... She has the only current Weimaraner Retrieving Champ in Australia.
  16. Hi everyone I'm back from the weimaraner national, back at work and at 4.52pm i am compltely exhausted!! i am beginning to regret not taking the rest of the week off!! All went well - the judge didn't love Ari, however... She still got graded as (FCI) Very Good (best was Excellent), but unfortunately the critique does not reflect as such... Still, she seemed to have a good time and I came back no closer to choosing her a stud I am so sad I missed out on all the action of the agility though - i would have come down to watch if i hadnt been in SA! I hope you all did well. Was very happy to hear while at the Reward dinner that a WA weimaraner took a first in the jumping
  17. I just returned to WA from Adelaide after attending the weimaraner national... yep sure it was expensive, but it's one of those things that is actually an honour and privilege to be at for me... if they had australia wide rule of not offering CCs of a particular breed I don't think i'd complain... it's one weekend... and WA doesn't have that many shows. In saying that, the weimaraner national is every 5 years (now 4), not annually...
  18. Ta! Please keep me posted!! How do we find this info out? I used to get the retrieving emails but don't seem to anymore you have to be a member i think - did you join as a member when you first went along?

  20. wow congrats to you BB!! can't wait to meet him at the next DOL meet!! (when he's old enough!) I have a very soft spot for pointers particularly the liver ones!
  21. They can be, but it isn't the general rule... they probably have the same amount of energy, perhapsthough a little more laid back... but then you can get laid back and not so laid back SH too. They are (at least at the moment) essentially the same breed, but perhaps certain characteristics from the lines have come through to make the LH line a little more laid back.
  22. RS - you and I live sort of close (SoR at least) if we do it, maybe we can car pool? My plan is to get started after the national (show) and Ari is no longer in season... maybe we can start to work out something on Monday?
