  1. Can anyone who has been through the process of transporting chilled semen give me an idea of how it's done? (process from semen collection through to insemination). Are there any companies that specialise in this? What is the general success rate of chilled semen AI? I am looking later this year at sending a bitch over east for a mating but I am trying to work out whether the process of an AI would be better. Thanks
  2. RS... are you going to enter or just go to watch? I hope you are going to enter! Valley the parade starts at pointers so after pointers it's weis, then starts at the beginning with you! so you will be straight after the weims. Occasionally it does clash depending on how fast the champ show judge is, but the rule is generally that the champ show is priority, so if they get up to labs in the parade and the labs are in the champ ring, the parade stops.
  3. Champ Show RS Gun Dog Club of WA I'll be there valley... i won't really be sitting around much though...
  4. perhaps the best thing to do would be to ring and ask... i recently flew a weimaraner from adelaide but she had to be booked through Australian Air Express because of her size so probably a little different to this scenario! Ring Qantas or AAE Adelaide.
  5. Hey Noisymina - Wazzat Xolo is the only person in Australia who owns Xolos... unfortunately for you she is in WA! However, I believe that she plans to send them around the country to be shown and I am fairly sure she mentioned something about the Ekka perhaps atlhough I could be mixing her up with someone else...
  6. I know exactly how you feel... I have seen many a dog both in australia and overseas and it has just never been right place, right time (or enough money ) but I know eventually, it'll happen...
  7. Barf is the same deal... it's still food... and it's still not controlled if you leave it down... Or do you mean you want to know whether BARF is a good food source? I suggest you do some searches on BARF there are plenty on DOL. Dogs don't know when their next meal going to come, so therefore they gorge themselves each and every time.
  8. well said Whippets, Black Bronson YOU can learn a lot from the experienced breeders on here, that are here to help and advise newbies and people that have NO idea, we ALL never stop learning in the Dog Game it is only those that choose to absorb that become truly respected. Newbies need to be advised with the truth about main and limited register as I mentioned before, many newbie purebreed owners think that "ALL" pet puppies have to be on limited register like it's an ANKC standard requirement because that's how some breeders put it across.........pets go on limited. But what they don't explain properly is that pets from their kennel go on limited because they have chosen to do so, not because of any official requirement. So the newbie purebreed owner has just accepted the breeders terms after being given a conjob.............that's what I am talking about Some breeders forget to even mention the limited register and the newbie owner thinks that the papers coming in the post are the real deal which isn't fair is it???. I do not believe that there are many breeders out there who would not explain the difference between main and limited, if it cameup... but if they from the start insisted that all they want is a companion dog, why on earth would anyone happily put it on the main register, particularly if at the time of assessment, it is not up to "mains" registration? the way i see it, it is almost an official requirement that we assess and place puppies on the specific registers... if I was to place all puppies from a litter on main registration, but 8/10 of them went to "pet" homes, and then they went ahead and bred with them, we are inadvertantly breeding dogs that are not for the betterment of the breed.
  9. it does happen - might be a better question in the breeders section.
  10. What you describe as "anorexic" is a lean healthy weight for a Chi. She'll live longer and in better health if she looks like that. Absolutely no sugar.. that' just dead calories to her. If you want to give her roo than that has to come out of the tablespoon allowance. You have to remember that your dog has a TINY stomach. She'll eat more than she needs because thats what dogs do.. they gorge themselves. Her weight is a significant contributer to her current health issues - loving her will see you get that weight off, not feeling sorry for her and trying to liven up her diet. Remember NO TREATS.. none, unless they come out of her normal daily allowance. That means no bits of toast or other things we all love to share with our dogs. She will need very gentle exercise. How much does she get now? I was joking re the anorexia.I had though glucidin would give her extra energy not calories, seeing only allowed a tablespoon of this dry stuff. As much as the vet reiterated this will not get better with-out surgery, having extra weigh on would not help matters and her mobility of course. It is only muscle power keeping her walking, often wondered why she looked so strong in her front quarters, all understood now,the front bearing all the weight.I have not seriously exercised her out-side the house yard, now is probably not the time to start. The only treats "they" get are Liver,Lamb Crumbles,Roo chews & those hide sticks from Crazy Clarkes, probably 3 times a week.Thought it was Patellas until ex-rays. This is simply not the case. In actual fact, it would be best to reassess whether she needs surgery AFTER the weight is off. When my dog was diagnosed with HD, the vet gave me my options, but it was of his opinion that he would do just as well as long as he was a healthy, well muscled dog who received supplements for joints. It sounds to me as though the vet you have been speaking to is giving you the worst case scenario as the only scenario without assessing the dogs other needs. Had this been done before she decided to put your pup under the knife, the weight issue would have been addressed. The responsibility now lies with you to take this extremely seriously. Dogs who are overweight are prone to much more than joint issues. No treats unless they are taken out of the daily feeding quota, joint supplements (fish oil, joint guard or sashas blend) are a must, and exercise in water or on soft ground. Your dog is very small - you have the option of getting a paddling pool to get her to swim and take pressure off those joints, which are not just strained from bad hips, but from weight as well. lastly, give her the option of energy by exercising her... the more she exercises the more weight will come off. You dont need to give her sugar for energy. Sugar will simply turn to fat if she doesn't burn it off for exercise.
  11. I think it's probably more a guideline in case there isn't anything else on... in this case, if there was no one else there to open the gates, the gates wouldn't be open until 10.30... they are usually opened earlier anyway.
  12. I agree with others advice. Weight on a dog is probably one of the biggest issues for dogs with HD. Get the weight off now, then take her to a specialist who will be able to assess her correctly and give you ALL the options. Until she has lost the weight, only light exercise on soft surfaces or in water. Muscle is very important.
  13. well if anyone finds out anything about lure coursing that is open to all breeds, let me know!! i am fairly sure Ari would love it.
  14. W.A... wait awhile... so many stupid rules...
  15. Yeah I wasn't sure at all about lure coursing... read about it in another thread and was curious... Yes the retrieving trials are great. Did you go on your own or take Ruby with you?
  16. LOl that's very keen!! I suppose I hadbetter think about bathing Ari... Oh, does anyone know if they do Lure Coursing for breeds other than sighthounds for fun in WA? was just reading about it in another thread and thought it might be a fun thing to try with Ari... although in saying that I have been told not to encourage her to chase if i want to do retrieving! but still i'd like to know if i have the option to give it a try!
  17. I know of one breeder that has a pattern of outcross for two generations then breed back the third. It's worked very well for them with multiple BIS and BISS champions and grand champions. It also depends, of course, on how close you breed back.
  18. Valley you get points at all champ shows... so considering most of our champ shows where you can show a chessie ARE all breeds then yes that is where you'll get your points... But you will be eligible for points at the Gundog Club Champ shows I am showing at the GDC show on Sunday I think my next show with Ari after that will be the Winter Festival... I am showing Charlie at a few more than that... but Ari needs a break and focus on other things.
  19. RS did you manage to get to the trial? bumping us off page 2 first time in a while!!
  20. BichonCrazy, are you looking to buy or to just see Bichons? If you are looking to buy a puppy, do not limit yourslef to location. There are not a great number of breeders out there in WA. Also, keep in mind the people who purchase their chosen breed from different states. All three of my dogs came from the East. The cost is not that much higher, and I have to say each time the breeder matched temperament perfectly.
  21. In all my puppy research, price was actually the last thing on my mind... but perhaps that was because for each puppy i saved up an amount and if that amount wasn't going to be enough by the time it came to discussing price, I would have either waited for the next litter to save more (if i thought it was worth it) or i would have told the breeder that was more than i could afford and that i would have to walk away. Lines and type are much more important than price, but there is a line i would draw. I think tellling people the general going rate for a puppy is the best thing... I only recently found out the "going rate" for pups in my breed... it was far more than i thought and has gone up since I got my bitch 3 years ago.
  22. Might be different for some breeds, but for our current social club it hasn't been hard finding/maintaining the members, only hard finding people willing to be part of the committee who runs it. That is why our breed club folded the first time. We are taking our time before we apply for affiliation because we don't want it to fizzle!
  23. English Setters and Weis first and foremost but (in no particular order): Irish Water Spaniel Irish Setter Slovakian Pointing Dog Bracco Lowchen Tibetan Terrier Tibetan Mastiff Saluki Gordon Setter Pointer
  24. Certainly doesn't happen in my breed... every breeder/exhiibitor i spoke to who has been at a national previous to the one i attended said you never know what might happen at a national.I am sure everyone who exclusively breeds shorthair weimaraners who watched a different LH win BIS three years running would agree. For those with breeds who have nationals on a yearly basis, is this too often, perhaps? maybe it has lost it's appeal? Sorry slightly off topic...
