  1. lovely!!! the very best of luck with Jethro!!
  2. She does do some naughty stuff but this is probably the worst in a while... she usually has a real destructive phase right after she gets over her season and subsequent phantom and i have no idea what i can do with her during that time!
  3. buggerme that photo is too cute!! You should ask your breeder what type of shows they show in (All breeds, specialties or both) - never been to a specialty but from what i understand they are quite different! You have to run a lot
  4. Hi there - Welcome! what emery said... but i guess with GSD it also depends what "type" of GSD you have? I know that there are a lot of people that show them in the specialty rings but don't set food in the All Breeds rings... IMO the best thing to do would be to speak to your breeder first and foremost about the fact that you want to show, and find out how to go about it. Your breeder might have some contacts in WA that she could contact and help you get started. If you are also interested in obedience, then joining the GSD club would be a start too... but i am not sure what the club is like with new members so i can't help you there. I only know Mark with GSDs because he was our obedience instructor at another club and he is very nice. Either way, you will need to make sure you get the pedigree papers from your breeder, and they will need to be mains if you want to show. You'll need to transfer pup into your name with DogsWest (go to their website to download membership form, but you'll need to send this in with your puppy's signed pedigree papers) before you can start officially in any of your chosen activities. Unfortunately i don't know much at all about showing GSDs so i can't give you any practical advice... but i'd try the breeder first of all and go from there. Please post some pics of your new pup when you get it!! we like photos but we don't post nearly enough on the WA thread!! i came home to a right mess last night... Ari - 1 Playstation 2, controllers, plugs, foxtel aerial cords - 0 Not happy!!!
  5. Hi yackets mum sorry if it's a strange question, but can i ask why you think you need a dryer? I'd have thought the ACD would be pretty much a towell dry type... please correct me if i am wrong! Have a look at the Dogzonline classifieds pages - sometimes there is secondhand grooming equipment available.
  6. All well explained so i'll just expand on my dogs names: Pedigree name - Silver Sparkle - Sparky (not chosen by us she was already named) Pedigree Name - Lladro - the theme was China (as in dishes). royal Doulton was knocked back Call name Spartan Pedigree Name - Aces Gold - I got to choose this but the rule was it had to have something to do with gold or hammers and i chose gold! Call name James Pedigree Name - Underline Me - The theme was the letter U (breeder goes through the alphabet) so i just came up with a few options starting with U - Call name Ariane (Ari for short) We also had a litter of pups when i was a kid on behalf of the breeder but we got to name them... We decided on a "herb" theme Pedigree Name - Wild Tansy - Call name Tansy (we kept her) Pedigree Name - Sweet Basil - Call name Basil Pedigree Name - Penny Royal - Call name Penny Pedigree Name - Angelica (she was given her wings :D) Pedigree Name - Lavendar Blue - Call name Lilly. ETA my prefix was chosen based on English Setter History, but i didn't get my first choice which would have been lovely but i like my prefix now.
  7. I am on an english breed forum may i please cross post and perhaps someone will be able to help there?
  8. There is little difference between the weimaraner who works and a weimaraner that shows... there are some extremes in both though - but working weimaraners ARE bred to standard, and in the case of the true German bred weimaraners, they must be proven in work and the showring and assessed by a breed warden in order to be able to be bred. the breed warden (appointed by the german wei club) will also choose a mate based on several aspects, and the breeder will have little say. The one cosmetic aspect really of the weimaraner is coat. it is speculated that there were blue and grey (dilute liver) weims but the standard was created stating only grey, mouse and silver grey. Blue weimaraners are deemed by the german club as cross breeds. This was also the case for LH weimaraners at one stage but they have since been accepted in every country but the US. There are a larger number of LH in Europe than in the UK and Australia... presumably because their coat type is better in their climate. In Germany, breeding LH to SH to produce carriers is strictly supervised. All the setters are similar in type, but have differences which reflect the nature of the land that they worked... this includes colour. It is believed that all setters started out as the red and white setter, but changed over time to suit different counties. The English setter developed with flecking, which was generally just preferred by the main person who had a hand in its development. the Irish gradually became a solid red, however the main reason why there were white and red preferred was becasue they were easier to spot in the field. In type and build, the Gordon Setters heavier build is due to the Scottish Landscape. The Old English Sheepdog started out as a dog which was born with a full tail or a bob tail. When docking became common practice (an item which was pressed in the original standard was to give preference to the bob tailed dogs), selection for the bob tail reduced... there are few if any OES left that carry the bob tail gene, at least in australia. The reason why the OES has a heavier rear coat was also due to the standard, which called for a heavier coating of hair on the "hams" Their coat type is so heavy due to the nature of it's work. Colour has never been particularly significant in the working OES... and blue, merle and black and white are all allowed to be shown as a result. The white jacket was later selected as a preference in the ring hence why most have this trait today. I guess what I am trying to point out, that there are at least some working breeds and gundogs where there was a reason for colour, a reason for coat type, for temperament... there is always a reason for head shape, general shape and every single part, i believe, in every standard for the working breeds and gundogs, is related to function... that is, if you read the original standards for these breeds, and not those that have been changed to suit what was being bred at the time...
  9. oh i hope he finds a home how sad for him!
  10. I know a bunch of OES people are heading up on those dates emery there is a couple of places i think - but i wouldn't know who they are... hopefully someone else will come along shortly and advise.
  11. I think the bolded bit above is really important. We are hoping to have our first litter later in the year (Irish Terriers) and every step of the way has included the help and support of our bitch's breeder who has numerous years of experience. We also have several other mentors in other breeds who we have discussed things like puppy raising and whelping tips with. You can do all the reading you want but I think a good mentor or multiple mentors is vital. I'm in the same boat... first litter later this year. I plan to be completely upfront about it, but will also be adding the fact that I have had invaluable support from my breeder. I also agree with SP - I believe that in the cases where it is your first litter, and you are out there to prove yourself, you will strive that much harder to ensure that you are doing everything right.
  12. I hope that Champa is ok Kirty... sounds like he got all the active traits of the lab and the GSP!
  13. *hugs* because i know what you are going through...
  14. emery too adorable!! valley i have considered it but i have a feeling i won't go... do you mean october or September?
  15. whipitgood i totally agree with you... here we are trying to promote the benefits of having a purebred dog, one of them being the papers that prove your pup is pure, and the minority out there are ruining the effort others are going to by not abiding by the simple rules!
  16. I'd maybe consider jeans for an open show, but to date i've never done it... I prefer skirts, but i'm more likely to wear pants if the weather is cold!
  17. I believe the people who should breed are the ones that have the interests of the breed at heart - that is maintaining the breed, respecting and honouring the history and standards of the breed, and doing what can be done to maintain or improve health of their breeds. Funnily enough, i read each revision of the OES standard from 1888 (original UK version) to 1990 and the differences, exlusions and add ins were astounding!
  18. You must be pretty happy about that Valley!!
  19. ravenau1 it is on at the DogsWest Grounds - Corner of Warton and Ranford Roads in Southern River. The public is always welcome. I can't remember what breed you are interested in but let us know and someone can tell you what day they are on.
