  1. Valley yes i have tried clicker with James... i have no doubt i can train him (patiently) but honestly he is fine the way he is. He gets heaps of attention and i think he actually enjoyed being on his own the other night. He had a kong full of biscuits and peanut butter and his speshy nylabone... and no one to compete with!! Besides, he does sit, it just takes him a while to decide if itis worth his while... you should see how fast he does it if it is!! quickbrownfox i love your puppy. when I was growing up a close neighbour had an airdale, and later got another. Such lovely dogs - stubborn to the max but still lovely! This particular airdale was "friends' with my two weims, although he had little interest in much besides marking his territory!!
  2. if anyone wants a real challenge they can train James *crickets* no takers? Just kidding - he is stubborn and a little less than intelligent but i loves him the way he is.. it's the other two that i want obedience trained!!
  3. Agree with this... In fact it could be that the right person (first time owner) could be even more prepared for a particular breed through research than someone that owned the breed 20 years ago and "knows a thing or two"... I think it's always case by case. Sometimes, you can't help what breed you fall in love with and it pays to know what you are getting yourself into.
  4. Would your friend get it through City of Gosnells? YEP I get them all through all over have 100% sucess so far! There is always appeals to Minister if all else fails!! So when I finally want that third dog, I could hire you and your friend to help me get the application through CoG? This is a council area that does not even let you apply for a 3rd dog permit! I'd be really interested to hear of anyone actually getting permission in the CoG area, and how it was done!!! To once again quote an email they sent me: Further to your email regarding keeping of 3 dogs in the City of Gosnells. Unlike most other Councils the City of Gosnells operates under a Town Planning Scheme which does not allow for more than 2 dogs on any property other than in the Kennel Zone. There are no applications or fees that can be sought as there is absolutely no provision for any property (other than in Kennel Zone section of Southern River) to have more than 2 dogs on it. RS I have only heard it is tough through the CoC... they haven't told me 100% just word of mouth... I actually do know of one person who applied for a 3 dog permit and was successful in the City of Gosnells, but this was nearly 10 years ago I think... my friends dog was nearly 18 when they had to take on a third and they applied with age being a factor of the third dog (even though she was like, the first dog!). She has since died (a small miracle it would be if she was still alive!) and the permit for three stops with the dog when it dies, and they haven't had three since.
  5. My weim doesn't give the boys a chance... she loves cuddling up to my mums weim though.
  6. Thanks J, unfortunately this is 'normal' behaviour for him thanks for another recommendation too and don't tempt me with puppies, that's very bad Anyway I'm up to my 2 dog limit for Perth Its ok you can get three just apply! ( I know someone who has written up that many three dogs apps and never failed!! lol) Your kids look so healthy and happy! Would your friend get it through City of Gosnells? :D or the city of Cockburn
  7. CC I might know of someone but i have to find out if she does consultations or not... if she does I'll give you her contact details.
  8. Oh yeah I forgot that I get to see a Chessie on a regular basis!! Plus some of the other rarer gundog breeds i get to see at shows... large munsterlander, Irish red and white setter, lagotto, wire haired vizsla... to name a few. I still haven't met the Xolos yet!
  9. My sentiments exactly. There is always two sides to every story and in this case we know both, but many times we do not and many times the breeder involved would have their reputation tarnished without the ability to respond. I think this is something to think about before making posts in future in relation to breeders for all of us. I am very sorry for both parties. I am very sorry that a breeder had to ring and let a new family hear the worst news, the way to finish off an already broken heart. And the new family will of course be completely devistated, no more much anticpated new baby. I feel sorry for everyone involved. Totally agree!!
  10. ALL dogs, DA or not, should be under effective control of their owner when off lead, or otherwise placed on lead, IMO... Friendly or fearless dogs might naturally approach any dog on lead or off, but it's up to the owner to control that dog, because the risk is always there, just as it is up to the owner of the leashed dog to let others know their dog isn't approachable. I don't think it's fair to say no DA dogs should be allowed at dog parks, i think it's fairer to say all dogs should be under control at all times at a dog park while off lead.
  11. I saw an irish water spaniel at my local park a couple of years ago. The owner was so shocked that I knew what it was. I have seen a couple in the past, at the Million Paws Walk, and there are some at shows now, but back when i saw this one I had never met one in the flesh before. They aren't hugely rare, but I never see many English Setters around... so i get really excited when i see one (except my own of course). I could barely contain myself when I saw one at the vets a few weeks ago. My sister saw a Spinone once - she rang me convinced that it'd be her next breed because it reminded her so much of an OES in the face but without the hair. I was just surprised she saw one!! I remember years ago seeing a briard at obedience training. that was pretty cool.
  12. i'm no help ncarter I travel to Applecross for my vet needs (20 mins away in good traffic)
  13. Spartan was word of mouth... i was originally on a list of a breeder in WA but she wasn't having any luck with her bitches falling... so she recommended a few to me and i chose one... just so happened that she had a litter due in the next month, and when born she offered me the pick boy who happened to be the only boy of the colouring i wanted. Got into showing, and therefore got my next dog from her. James was perfect in everyway but i was heartbroken after he was diagnosed with HD so i moved back to my childhood breed, weimaraners. I had never really researched breeders outside of the state for weimaraners but seeing as I got both my boys from Victoria i knew that it was quite easy, so i looked outside WA and away from the lines I had previously. Found dogs I liked the look of and sent the breeder an email. Told her what i wanted, she was very helpful and so supportive. I got Ari earlier than i had expected but the breeder has been incredibly supportive and helpful since then. I've been lucky enough to meet her a few times now and we get along great. If i wasn't planning on breeding Ari i'd be getting my next pup from this breeder without even having to think about it.
  14. So sorry Steve very sad thing to have happened RIP puppy
  15. I am so sorry for Vaders Mum and Steve also... that is an awful thing to happen but a complete accident. Steve is a very well respected breeder and member of DOL and was my first choice when i recommended a breeder of beagles to my friend, also in WA. I honestly feel that Steve comes across as nothing but genuine all the time and tries incredibly hard to to the right thing by all her puppy buyers. You are in safe hands, Vaders Mum, and you'll get a beautiful puppy that will help you ease the pain of the tragic loss of poor vader
  16. i know poocow knows a bit about AQIS stuff, you could try to PM her?
  17. well i can't find anything in the rules to say the handlers must be canine members so it's either changed or i read the wrong info a while ago!! so, tha means OH can do a leg or two - hooray!!
  18. I know of one couple who appeared to get a couple of dogs as practice babies. They lived in the house, they did all the right things with obedience training and socialising... then they had a baby, and the dogs went outside. I heard later that one of the dogs was so distressed being shoved outside after living a life of comfort and companionship inside the home that he became destructive and noisy. Neighbours complained and they rehomed the dog. I dont like the term "practice baby" if the couple deliberately goes out to get a dog that is their "trial run" for parenting. I also don't like it when people humanise their dogs by treating them the way they would treat a child. Wanting a dog and then realising that you can successfully look after and be responsible for another living creature is what I don't mind, so long as the committment is there for life. Poppydog you are clearly in this category!
  19. Yeah Ptolomy i saw you didn't appear to be entered but i was sure that valley told me you were. Maybe I was mixed up with another show? This is the show being held and UWA our 65th anniversary show. It's a shame really as it's an international UK judge.
  20. wazzat you didn't finish your sentence!! Given the time I am inclined to think you may have fallen asleep on your keyboard!! Ptolomy was your ex a member of the CAWA? Only i read in the rules that you have to be a member to be a runner and so that was why I ruled out my OH to do the ET... even though he would have been perfect at it!! Also... are you entered in the GDC show?
  21. ok the official rules are on this page (as a PDF link ANKC ET Rules a simplified version
  22. I read a really good website about the requirements for the ET a while ago. You wouldn't be able to walk it. You have to keep a certain pace the whole time and keep up with others doing that pace (for example if your dog stops to toilet you have to work harder to ensure you catch up) but remember it isn't all done at once! They have a break (vet check and willingness/obedience test i think?) in between. I'll see if i can find the link to the ET rules.
  23. omg Indy is soooo shiny and gorgeous! so sleek!! beautiful!! I hope she settles down soon! I have a real soft spot for siamese!! Glad that your puppers have settled in nicely - they look very cosy on "their" lounge!! RS i was hoping to do the ET as well next year, but I just don't know how I'll manage it (nevermind the dog!) even on a bike it sounds like a difficult task. CC ET is Endurance Test.
  24. There are a lot of things to consider when adding a second dog to your household... not just the comforts of what you assume may be a depressed and lonely older dog... Twice the dog for walks, training, food, vet treatments, worming, fleas etc. Possibility if not chosen correctly two dogs that do not get along Possibility of the older dog actually preferring it's own company and being depressed when a second dog comes along. Be sure first and foremost that you WANT a second dog and it isn't just for the sake of the other dog. Also be sure that the current dog isn't just wanting for something else other than company (extra entertainment like new entertaining toys) and extending or adding extra walks. 12 hours is a very long time to be away from the home... i think the idea of a dog walker is a good one.
