  1. go ahead and ask a question FHRP - that last answer deserves a gold star!!
  2. FHRP you win!! Yes the oldest is the Irish Red and White, which also almost became extinct and had to reopen the stud books! Yes there is a show or bench strain, but what is that also known as? - and the working strain, known as the Llewellin setter is correct... and yes, used with nets!! they were also known to work with falconers.
  3. lol "using examples from the above text, blah blah blah"
  4. Ooooh yay me!! Ummmmmmmmmm A setter focus... try not to google it!! which is the oldest of the recognised setters? name the two strains of English Setters (there is definitely more than two, but these are the well known ones - bonus point if you can name more) and... before guns came about for shooting game, explain how setters were used to hunt game birds?
  5. sure RV, pick a retriever question I know heaps about retrieving breeds!! *grumps in corner until a question about cool gundog breeds comes up*
  6. R&H you don't fail completely - there is a Jersey in the US! but LR was right, it's Jersey in the Channel Islands... and thank goodness because there is no way I or my sister would want to be trimming charlie the way they do in the US now Jersey has a kennel club, believe it or not, and 4 shows a year! but i don't think they have a title... So keep your fingers crossed that Charlie can win something to be eligible for Crufts 2012... I have no idea how he'd go against UK OES... so it'd just be a bit of fun!! (Plus my sister would let me handle him). If we win BOB at the classic this year, we may be eligible in 2012...
  7. wow they sound like English setters... except, well... with the inclination to actually retrieve!! Me too - fabulous looking breed... i love that elastic movement.
  8. goldenwei!!! a Goldy!!!! you've been holding out on us in the wei thread! seriously though - congrats - Caesar is gorgeous
  9. yep i plan to visit!! i'm hoping to visit and get to crufts in 2012... anyone want to join me?! he he
  10. she definitely can't wait mira - in fact they can't wait so much that they are going in January, my mum follows in March, and Char follows in May!!
  11. RS my sister owns Charlie. They aren't going for good though - about 5 years.
  12. you so do not have a filter - you just stay on DOL WA thread all day refreshing in the hope that someone mentions you ;)
  13. RV you are crazy!! Ptolomy I'm hoping that Santa will bring me some kind of off switch for Ari... that might stop her from things like chasing roos!! What are my chances? RS why not consider showing yourself? it's very rewarding! you also learn a lot about structure and movement... plus it's a whole different ball game to obedience, so a compltely new set of challenges! (I know you love a challenge) My 2011 will consist of waving goodbye to my sister and mum, and then waving goodbye to my favourite showdog Charlie - all of them off on a wonderful journey to Jersey! I'll also be taking on handling of one or two new showdogs, including one of Charlie's sons I'm also very excited for my litter of little grey slugs. unfortunately, due to that litter, it means missing out on most of the tracking season, so i'll be hanging out to get that started before it closes again - around September!
  14. RS, i was in the same boat as you... sort of... i had stuff to do, but chose to avoid it! so, I changed jobs... best move I've made yet!!
  15. I find that the dirt sticks to Ari more than it sticks to James... James', if he digs in dry sand, will have black feet and then eventually, its all gone! The dirt on ari sticks to her less hairy areas - her tummy mainly!! Although, if there is black pawprints through my house, i know who to blame... my boys like to walk the perimeter of the garden for some reason (they like taking the long way around!), and that includes walking through the garden beds... if the garden beds are wet, they bring in the dirt with those cute hairy hobbit feet!
  16. I am a serial gazebo borrower... i am always in other people's gazebos but I always bring food If I am the only one showing, or there is plenty of room, I tend to sit in the shade because WA has so many trees. I don't have any issues with not seeing the ring, since i spend most of my time talking anyway I'm hoping to buy a gazebo next year, even though I'll have less dogs to show!! time to repay back all those years of shade borrowing!
  17. Was your original agreement in writing? if so, i would forward them a copy of it and outline points in the agreement.
  18. it certainly isn't fair to generalise about labs rushing etc... but one must acknowledge that part of the joy of purebred dogs is that their temperaments are predictable. Labs are friendly, outgoing dogs, and as a result, can occasionally be over-exuberant. it doesn't mean that all labs will rush, as this is always dependant on their owners and the level of training and manners that dog has been taught. Just like the same issues we face with breeds that fall under BSL, we must blame the owner, not the dog. The dogs temperament is predictable, and as always, it is human error that contributes to the issues. Part of owning any purebreed is being aware that not all dogs will always like their particular style of play or behaviours. An ongoing issue I have seen in owners of labs (and probably not the types of people that frequent DOL either), is that they see it as a personal insult that someones dog does not react happily to their friendly lab. Just like in that fantastic article (of which I have sent the link on to several people i think might enjoy it or benefit from it ), put yourself in your dogs shoes... if this was a human behaviour, would it be acceptable?
  19. I'd want to know... even if i couldn't do anything about it at the time, at least I'd be able to warn others in the breed about selling to that person in the future...
