Retrieving & Field Training Talk
SparkyTansy replied to RubyStar's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Duke is Greywei Multi Million - he's shown in ACT mostly. I've heard a bit about Poppy2. So cool she's such a good worker, given she came back from a pet home!! Charlotte sounds a fair bit like Ari!! -

He is Duke, but he doesn't live with norma. Is that Poppy 1 or Poppy 2 you love? Poppy 1 is retired but I'm not sure who she lives with! she is duke's dam. I absolutely love Charlotte too - I met her at the national and the judge also loved her, because she was so switched on and clearly showing was not the thing on her mind!! I'm so jealous you got to hang with 6 weis and do retrieving!! -

:D Norma bred Lulu's daddy. She also spent a bit of time training Ari's mum a while ago. She's always there to help me out when I'm stuck on something!! I wish she was closer -

I know... I hate how they always have evil reflecty eyes!! CC they did get a smartie, but more so because it is for some reason, Ari's superfood and she was drooling on my leg.

I agree with this. I am more than happy to have a reputable breeder with another breed make initial enquires for friends. I always tell my friends and family to never buy a puppy without letting me suss out the breeder first. The average pet buyer has no idea what to ask so it is always better if they have a knowledgeable friend to find the right breeders before making contact themselves. I agree also, however I have found that being a breeder, and making that initial contact for someone else, but mentioning I am a breeder, has not really got me anywhere... It seems that some of the questions I am asking are just too hard and they would prefer not to answer. Only one person helped me out with recommendations as they didn't have anything available and in every instance I have given some initial information, asked the questions i wanted to know, and then said that if they think that X (person i am enquring for) is suitable, I will have them contact the breeder, and what is a suitable time to do so. I would be wary of someone making contact for someone else, but only if they didn't seem to want to give up the owners details or get the owners to speak with me. I would have no issues with someone contacting me to ask questions about my breeding practices or how I raise my puppies.

Congrats Skunk :) Looking forward to some photos! What did you name her?

Do You Trust People Your Dog Dosent Like?
SparkyTansy replied to jess live die's topic in General Dog Discussion
I don't really - spartan likes everyone, and the two weimaraners are typical of their breed and wary of strangers, and are ok to exciteable to anyone they have met and got used to more than once. James is the interesting one - he's mostly friendly with people, more indifferent... but there is one guy who he really doesn't like who is a good friend of ours. In fact he grew up knowing this guy and never had an issue with him when he was a puppy. Because of this, I generally take his exception to him with a grain of salt. -
I was at school with a troll phase too - primary school!! also the marble phase and the basketball card phase! ETA CC glad to see Kwinana is now the beach of choice for DOLers!
-
 @ tamagotchi yes, I had one!! TVs in schools - gosh I remember one of my social studies teachers (who was awesome) used to love having an excuse to get the TV out and put on Back to the Future II... usually end of term when no one would focus!

As an epidemiologist, I can tell you that the Great Dane Lady doesn't know her arse from her elbow. The research methods used in the Purdue study are entirely legitimate and similar methods would be used in human studies of the same nature. Those looking at cancer risk factors for example. . And it is a good study with a reasonable sample size and has done a multivariate analysis (ie they have cross referenced all the factors to see which ones are still significant when you add them all together.) Agree- and I think that part of that scientific study presented that the stress factor was inconclusive, from memory. (I attended a seminar not long ago regarding bloat and this study was presented). Also, in terms of avoiding breeding lines with bloat, while I agree avoiding lineage that might have a history of bloat, it is virtually impossible to avoid direct parentage bloat given that most dogs bloat at an older age, usually after breeding has taken place. Breeding a dog that has bloated, however, is irresponsible. (ETA, however if you know your lines well, you would know about the other generations, hopefully).

I hope Alvin is found soon Clyde

but this is how it happens with challenge points, so should that change too?

There are a few gundogs you can trust with chooks, but not weims I'm afraid... unless brought up from a young age but even then I'd not guarantee it. My friend has chickens and my English Setter and her Irish setters are fine with them, but i can't take my weims over there as i am worried her chickens would not live to tell the tale! i would definitely look at pointers although not sure on the chicken thing.

the most recent studies found with dogs that were already predisposed to bloat (so size/deep chested and commonly bloating breeds): increased chance of bloat with elevated food bowl 60% increase chance of bloat if either parent has bloated increased chance of bloat if you restrict water intake before/after eating no increased chance by restricting exercise before feeding increased risk if feeding once a day increased risk by soaking kibble no findings were found regarding raw food/bones vs kibble The best way to ensure a dog doesn't torsion is the Gastropexy, however as OsoSwift says, it doesn't stop a dog from bloating... but it is easier to treat.

Pencil me in - I'm not sure what my plans are for that day yet but Lulus coat always looks great after a good sea swim!!

I don't think that is how it works if they are judged as two separate breeds. in Collies and in Weims, you will see them both in the line up, they are judged as totally different breeds and they each win a BOB. The only time they compete is for BIG, and yet the two can be bred together and produce rough/smooths and LH and SH.

Older Dogs Meeting Young Puppy Brain Ones
SparkyTansy replied to rubiton's topic in General Dog Discussion
This happened to me just the other day - was looking after one of the puppies from my litter, and he licked James on the face one too many times. a warning growl can very quickly turn to a snap if you aren't careful. -
My OH threw out a computer once, thinking it was an old old one, and it had all my photos on it... I only had a few saved elsewhere, like photobucket etc. I cried!!

That sux Emery are you sure? perhaps you have put it somewhere else...

Weimaraners are another breed that is shown as two separate varieties, but have the same breed standard and are allowed to be bred together. In the UK and I believe Europe, they are shown together. In the US the LH is not allowed to be shown. A little while ago someone tried to get the LH and the SH weims banned from interbreeding however we do not have the numbers to justify splitting the breed in Australia. There has also been some evidence in the past of other issues when completely eliminating the LH from breeding programmes. The request to split was denied by the ANKC I'd sooner see both varieties shown together than splitting the breeds. I am still not sure why there is one rule for some breeds and another rule for others that have two coat varieties.
