thanks persephone - I have tried several things including exhausting her, RR, chew toys/bones etc (although not sure what a DAP diffuser is?). Thanks to her wonderful breeding she is just one of those dogs that can rest for 5 minutes and be ready to go again, so exhausting her doesnt seem to work... the bones and toys entertain her for a little while, but after she devoured two large kangaroo tail portions in 10 minutes, I know it isn't for long... I know she sleeps for most of the day, but around 4pm (which is when I used to get home) she will become active and I believe all her destruction happens then. I havee tried her outside but she has dug up the retic, dug holes etc. She was also fine, for a while, inside, but recently decided that the blinds and the lounge chair arm corners were fair game and hence the solution being to crate her to keep her out of trouble... She is never without company but I believe she can get a little anxious if i or OH is not there. She is exercised (nearly) every day 1 hour morning and 1 hour night free running and lead walking. The mornings she is exercised vs not (for whatever reason) seem to make no difference.

Kayann what kind of rubber? I am guessing it doesn't rip easily?

call your local council who will refer you to the local "snake collector"... he may charge you for his services, as they have to relocate the animals quite a distance away from their original area. try to keep an eye on where it goes, so you can tell the person who comes to find it where it likes to hide.

I crate trained James as a pup, but, like you as they got older stopped worrying about where they slept as he was well behaved... I have recently started crating again... mostly for my Weimaraners benefit rather than james, but I crate James next to Ari in the hope that it will comfort her. Initially it was a lot of praise, bones and fun things to do. I know that James no longer requires any of this stuff and sleeps during the day. He never barks in his crate. Ari still requires the extra entertainment otherwise destruction ensues (see my thread on bedding LOL), however she was never 100% crate trained as a pup as she broke out of a metal crate as a young puppy. James appears to be quite happy to go into his crate now. He gets fed in there also which I think helps.

sandgrubber, have they tried to unravel the carpet in any way? is there certain carpet types which aren't easy to unravel? I did have some carpet in there at one stage... i came home to a ball off unravelled wool in one corner and the plasticy stuff shoved in the other corner...

Does anyone have any ideas or experiences on bedding used for a dog that likes to rip up their dog bed/blanket/carpet? No matter what I put in Ari's crate to sleep on she rips up (she is crated when I'm not home) She is given bones, kongs, chewtoys etc in order to distract her but she still rips up her bedding. Any ideas would be appreciated...

oooh i didn't know you did the superdogs showdog - i probably watched you!! I remember school holidays if they were at my local shops i would walk down everyday to watch... the weims were hilarious cos they are just so clumsy... I think it'd be great to see if they got it started again... i dont think i'd do it, Ari isn't ball crazy enough, but i would love to watch.

I think this must have been the kid that asked me this a billion times, all grown up but still lacking knowledge!! I try not to get annoyed but it is hard sometimes when you have several people tell you that it's cruel when they see the OES... yes, because a fully brushed, happy CLEAN dog is unhappy with his lot in life... -
kinad - how exciting a Bull Terrier!! I love them... make sure you post pics when you find you perfect one!

Ok, my error, however if you enter a speciality show, why don't you have specialty judges? This is a very poor refelection on the management/committee of your breed club. If a specialty judge cannot be obtained, what's the point of having a specialty show? If they are not specialty judges their critique is not worth the paper it's written on so why would any exibitor 1-2-3 etc bother to stick around for a critique that is of no value. May as well just stick to all breeds until the club can get it's act together. Dlanigervon, not all clubs have the luxury of a large entry. Every year, the OES club of WA has to put in extra effort fundraising etc in order to get an interstate judge to come over, and no not all of them are breed specialists, because you do eventually run out of them. last year we went with a judge who had been out of the breed for a number of years but had the breed in the past. This year we have to do extra fundraising in order to get another interstate judge so we considered getting a local judge, because we only had 7 entries in the breed last year. The OES breed club is actually lucky, as we have the option of fundraising through Dulux paints. I would hate to know how difficult it is for a breed club of similar size to fundraise without those options behind them. I think there are many breed clubs out there who do a fantastic job keeping their clubs going, and NOT supporting them is quite damaging to the breed.

I also found it poorly worded (i am pretty sure we use the DogsVic test). Some of the questions are worded in such a way that they could have more than one answer, so I answered the questions by stating scenarios. I guess it worked for me I think I may have done a little extra work to get my point accross!! I think they should have breeder seminars, in which those who wish for prefixes do a course, have a test at the end (NOT open book) and then they can hand in their pre-filled prefix paperwork at the end if they pass. It isn't a totally unreasonable concept. Plus you have the added benefit of asking experienced course trainers questions. I think this system is done in Europe and i think it works quite well. I guess the only downfall to this type of concept is those who go BYB instead of doing things right... but perhaps the idea of passing a course run by the ANKC gives them a further "edge" over bybs and this may attract them?

I lke the idea of your 4 best shows in a month too... I also think the double points for bigger shows is a good one, makes sense because those who enter the bigger shows with competition benefit... I suppose it doesn't really matter too mcuh for me anyway, I am not exactly a contender against the big winners and I just like seeing where I sit.
-
Max with that attitude it sounds as if you can take or leave the pointscore anyway. enter it for the fun of seeing how many points your dog is on and that is all. it is hard to compare at times anyway because all the states have such a varience in numbers.

I think all teh schnauzers have to be stripped for showing which isn't easy to learn I don't think... and there are times of the year you can't show them if they aren't in coat.
-
I tend to agree with viz and pointer, but i the wei doesn't tick the same boxes... they aren't exactly an easy going breed... there are some that are more easy going than others, but for example the girls can be quite full on and aware ALL the time, the males are more laid back, easy going and friendly with people but can be quite challenging with other dogs. yeah i wasnt too sure about the wei's, I like them but havent had too much to do with them the only ones I have spent time with seemed nice! They are a lovely breed don't get me wrong (i wouldn't be doing much for the breed if i didn't think that!) but they generally have to be with their owners all the time which is why a lot of people think they are highly strung, cos you can't take one away without it getting concerned... although if they are used to it (atshows and such) they handle it well.

Although... the LH wei is definitely more laid back as a general observation, especially the males. They actually require very little coat prep to show... generally a foot trim is about all required.

so that is what that means... LOL i was wondering. Most of our shows wouldn't get those numbers for an all breeds.

Do Your Dog/s Reflect Their Sex?
SparkyTansy replied to Pollywaffle's topic in General Dog Discussion
Spartan is every inch a boy... Ari is every inch a girl (and a bitch as well!) James i think is a little soft and gentlebut that is a breed trait... he does look a little girly in the face and is small though. -
