  1. thanks for posting this SamMan.. :) reading it i teared up a bit.. what a loved and blessed life maggie had. I had to smile at the comment that she worked rounding up the cows until 12 years ago! bless her. H
  2. here is an article: "100 years of breed improvement" author Caen Elegans / 2012/09/29 well worth the read not the least because it has photographs of breeds from the 1915 book Breeds of All Nations by W.E. Mason alongside photos of examples of the modern version. draw your own conclusions. https://dogbehaviorscience.wordpress.com/2012/09/29/100-years-of-breed-improvement/ h
  3. a huge smile and a few tears.. what a brave brave lad Andy is.... H
  4. And with Snooza you get a free repairs service + lifetime guarantee (you have to register for this. Bonus, they send your dog a birthday present every year). The initial price is expensive though. For single beds, check out your local salvos or brotherhood for discount ones? another vote here for snooza.. they really are excellent and their repair service is equally as excellent. H
  5. krislin... my heart aches for your loss. Nothing will ever be the same again.. I remember reading these words when one of my heart dogs died... and they still ring so true Vicki Hearne " Until (s)he died (s)he was immortal and the death of an immortal is an event that changes the world" the memories you both made together have made you who you are today and that is a very big legacy. Hugs Helen
  6. hehehehehehe! all that is needed is one hint of a bully gene and you have a bed hog. My late Jake ( he who lived the first 6 years of his life chained to a rusty car wreck and fighting for his scumbag owner ) managed to slip into the role of bed hog as if from puppy hood. he too needed to be under the blankie. If i did not lift the doona cover for him h I would awake during the night and he would have wriggled into the bed and be curled up in the bend of my legs. If i moved he would give little snorts if irritation as he shot across to return to his preferred sleeping situation. This lasted until his final day with me. I still miss that lad... H
  7. Thank you Juice. The bolded part is what I mean yep I totally understand. I have had a few oldies join the pack here over they years. Bear was about 9 or 10 when he came to us from a couple who adored him but changes in health meant they could not keep him. They were distraught about leaving him. Bear was ok at my place until the day his people visited.. he was beside himself with joy. greeted with tail going nineteen to the dozen. received pats and hugs and gentle croonings.. gave them both a snuggle and a lick..the went out and joined Honey under the house..from that moment he belonged totally here. I think he was relieved that his people were fine... and that allowed him to relax fully. I love that old boy to distraction. H
  8. well I have had experience with sevral "feral' unhandled maremmas that have come thru here... they are smart but will not be rushed. Success has always come when they have been given the time they need to adapt to a changed situation. Maremma rescue victoria would be an excellent choice to help the lad. If i were near I would make it my task to get to know him and do my level best to ensure he lived the rest of his life safe and contented. H
  9. I would see and oncologist, I would also see a reputable holistic practioner ( I recommend All Natural vet Care.. they helped with my girl Lucinda when she was dxed with MCT grade 3. ) The best option is to remove the tumour with clean margins, remembering that a large tumour on a leg can interfere with quality of life. So do not reject out of hand and i have seen many many dogs who have full wonderful lives as tripods.. thye have a wonderful ability to just get on with squeezing the very best out of life Cheers Helen
  10. Maybe .... ;) Ha ha jokes. I do agree, just not pre-coffee. After a week sleeping on an air mattress. After a night with a foxie firmly wedged up my bum ... cause ... ya know... he was comfy there... How does something only 40cm tall and 10 kilos take up do much room? determination and practice.... :D :D H
  11. my brother Labrador Missy.. put the bowl of food down and say "stolen" she sit there gazing at the food from the corner of her eye, drooling with her tail wagging just at the end. then the words "paid for" and Missy almost literally dives into the bowl..food flying everywhere as she shovels it in with gay abandon.. as would any self respecting Lab. H
  12. hugs to you.. it makes no difference if "the time" happens fast or slow.. we are never ready and yep our hearts break. remember that you are the person you are now because of the part of your life journey that you have travelled with your sweet Hazel and therefore she will be forever there in your memories, in your heart and in your very being until you meet again wherever it is that we all meet again. I farewelled my beloved Dennys Dog this year.. a pup I held in my hands to remove the birth sack and held in my arms at the end of his life... we who have farewelled our companions know that pain, that deafening silence in the house..that ache and that regret that we were not a gad and able to work just that one miracle. what keshwar posted is true.. Blessings Helen
  13. as climate changes then we should expect changes in the insect populations of various areas to change as well.. mozzies move and so do paralysis ticks, cane toads and fruit flies.... H
  14. just the most wonderful tribute to a much loved dog... i shed tears for peanut and all my guys and gals who have crossed before me.... yep the hole they leave is incredibly large. H
  15. yep both empty hands and the plate pre rinse here.... my birth mother used to be horrified.. but the plate go in the dishwasher and washed a high heat.. results is happy me, happy dogs and clean plates H
  16. LOL!! I still think of some of my rescues and fosters with regret ----- despite knowing they were going to better places. yep I too have regrets about some I have rehomed... tears as they all left but some just grab the heart in a slightly different way. Out of the blue on sunday i received an update about Hollie a maremma girl I rehomed over 4 years ago.. she looks wonderful, and they adore her.. so i had to shed a few more tears. LOLs H
  17. in my family law there is a rule : never fall a break a leg in the chook house for you would never survive.. H
  18. yep all those years ago july 2005 when my beloved Jake and The Divine Miss Sophie took their Bridge journey a mere 6 days apart..the silence was deafening. I could not sleep for the quiet.. You never get over but with time you get through.. and when you are a dog person.. it happens allover again. This year Dennys Dog... departed for those great tratturi of the skies... the memories bring both tears and smiles forever H
  19. lols lucky you. my yellow lab was called Brian Custard O'Doggle.. h
  20. I dunno. I think they should always have a plan. Especially for Domestic Violence cases. The person trying to get home could be the perpetrator or a witness or immediate family that needs protecting too. The police might not want to tell anyone why the street is cordoned off, but they should be able to say - it's dangerous, stay clear or the safe place to be is... local shops or school or some place suitably out of the way and have a team there to get details of the displaced - in case they need them. A street around the corner from me was cordoned off and that was the way I normally use to get anywhere useful... I went and had a chat and the police didn't tell me anything specific but they were able to tell me how long the road was expected to be closed for roughly, and that it was dangerous to cross the cordon and to stay clear. the message out of this is that there should be a plan for residents unable to return home in these cases... it only needs to be simple and this would not have happened at all. h
  21. aaaaahhhhhhh! super big sigh of relief.. Zac is in safe hands. well done everyone. the magic of DOL strikes again. H
  22. me too. it is an awful incident for everyone involved. it is also a reminder that in this life terrible things happen..they are called accidents and i believe that this was an accident as in a totally unforeseen occurrence. h
  23. OMG i cannot begin to imagine how terrible this is for you.. and of course your dogs.. glad there is good news... ..and have just read that Pudding can come home this evening.. yippee! happy dances all round. H
