  1. i hand raised a litter of ptbullpuppies ( all 8 of them from 10 days of ages. they were great pups. The Divine Miss sophie and morris provided them with adult doggie interaction etc. Tho the divine one ( great dane wolfie x) would sort of stand on tippy toes with a look of horror on her face whenthey would nuzzle around her belly looking for teats... H
  2. i have had people tell me that 1. maremmas are bred from golden retrievers !!! and argue with me whne i quietly deny that. sigh 2. that my wiltshire horn sheep are goats because goats have horns and sheep dont......... double sigh 3. this is a goodie : if you feed your dog raw meat they become "blooded" and untrustworthy and will attack .. triple sigh 4. almost forgot this; being told that maremma do not need to be fed as they eat grass with their flock.. and it was true because that is what his next door neighbour said .....in the next breath i was asked if i had pups available.. H ed to add no 4

  4. Tangos story was briefly on chanel 7 last night. however the final words were that he may not be free for long as the qld govt is amending the legislation... a pox on them if this is true does anyone know what the actual situation is helen
  5. everyone involved has been advised of the situation. sigh. I am just praying that there are no further problems.. the lady who brought Comet to me was doing a favour for the person who arranged for Comet to come to me.. H
  6. The dog fighters give their brutal savage twisted psychological mindset away when the dog is unable or unwilling to fight they are killed in a most painful and tortured way. Nothing humane or normal about these bastards at all.. for all their fine talk about the traditions etc. etc. they are scum and a disgrace to humanity. For 6 years I had the honour and pleasure of the company of Jake a pitbull who had been a fighter for the first years of his life. After he had been with me for a while I took him with me to a friends place as i was collecting some hens.. when we turned onto the bushytrack to their property jake crawled across the front seat and laid his head in my lap whimpering quietly...... It was with horror that i realised that maybe he thought i too was taking him to fight.... H
  7. I shouyld have added thankyou Erny for asking... around here the flooding is minor just cut roads etc making travel diffucult and dangerous. The ground is exceptionally boggy and the goats, sheep and their maremmas are not happy. The house maremmas are happily covered in mud and lounging on the verandah. helen
  8. i have learned another life lesson. I was asked to take in this dog as he was scheduled to be PTS and was supposed to be a maremma - which is beside the point actually -- anyway i had beentold that he had a slight runny nose and he arrive with a letter from the vet in charge andf a supply of amoxiclav.. the letter also said to expect some vomiting and diarhea and that this was normal... i feel like i have been somewhat taken for a ride. the compassionate vet at UQ will be contactingthe pound.. she was very very upset about the whole situation. My heart just breaks for Comet... just a young dog and he has been let down by humans.. fortunately Comet had diarhea when he arrive so I immediately isolated him as much as possible and wore overalls and gumboots when with him .. soaked the gumboots ( bleach solution) and took off the overalls and washed my hands in a bleach based solution before reentering my house yard.. hopefully that has been sufficient. As i stayed with Comet until the end so I needed to disrobe before entering my yard... the dogs looked at me as if i am mad as i dashed thru the gate into the house stark naked... thank god i live rural H
  9. comet has been granted his wings. it was never a matter of money.. it was a matter of finding an available after hours vet in these flood conditions. i am distressed that a shelter would release a dog that was already showing symptoms of parvo. now my dogs are a risk at least comet is now at peace helen
  10. ok then.. will try to track down an after hours vet.. bloody hard here on boxing day h
  11. hopefully you have collected your dogs as agreed. H
  12. thanks. no he has not had baycox... will be giving him liquids by syringe.. at 30 min intervals. have left message with my vet answering service but have not heard back... I think that Comet has just given up on trying to survive, When i go to the poen he looks hopeful but then just sighs and lays his head down again... damnation!!!!!!! this is not fair for him he is so so young... bugger and bugger again. H
  13. Christmas Eve i was expecting a young maremma lad from the brisbane pound. identified as a maremma who had a little sniffle. This afternoon i meet a young white and honey coloured dog.. he is very cute looks like a maremma x border collie.. BUT i think he may have parvo. ( maybe giardia )he is now in quarantine here. have spoken with my vet and i am seriously pissed off with the whole situation .. he is on antibiotics, panacur and scourban really anone who knows anything should know that you can have a maremma in any colour as long as it is white!!!!!!!!! however mr nameless stray is now Comet as he arrived on Christmas eve.. keep your fingers crossed for him I hope he has a stellar life ahead of him happy Christmas to all helen update and help : Comet is going downhill. I cannot get him to eat anything, he is listless and i think depressed. if he drink water he vomits it up.. i am about to speak with vet again.. but nay suggestions would be appreciated. i really dont want the lad to die Helen
  14. merry christmas from us as well hugs helen and the coominya maremmas
  15. I still well up with tears and an inability to speak over my dogs who have died... ( it passes quickly but it is there) I try to send a blessing to those who are grieving and if possible a month later a private email asking how they are.... H
  16. Looks like a Wolf to me. hmmmm! actually it could be a maremma... with cropped ears. many of the working maremma in abruzzo have cropped ears here is link to a heap of pics http://www.google.com.au/images?hl=en&...sa=N&tab=wi but then again itcould be a white anything mix Helen
  17. you say rural block ?/ what size is your house yard??? i am assuming that the house/yard is at the road front of your property. so here are my suggestions: 1. you can double fence the front section quite cheaply ( have the shrubs planted between teh origninal fence and the temporary second fence. The secon fence can be made using star pickets, straining wires some cheap mesh plus shade cloth or brush f4encing or even weed matting.. you can clip the shade cloth/ weed matting using maspro clips. 2. is it possible to section of the rear of the house?? thus giving your dog a smaller area that is his. again this can be quite inexpensive. 3. add in what others have said about a behaviourist... I do not think that it is abnormal for a dog to be protective of his area. You need to ensure that the front gates are securely close at all times that the dog had access to the front area. H
  18. T&S I am so sorry for your loss. Fly free Sam... Tara will be grieving the loss of her lifetime companion. maybe a foster olderdog will fill teh void forher. my two old dogs The divine miss Sophie and my glorious Jake passed within a week of each other.. Jakie just found battling dilated cardiomyopathy too hard after The divine One left us.. I secong the suggestion about a DAP diffuser..it has a very soothing and calming effect hugs Helen ps A candle will be lit tonight to burn brightly in honour of your Sam
  19. my holistic vet rcommends cycling thru the oild supplements and always adding a vitE it goes to show that just because something is "natural" doen not mean it cannot do harm also for those with small dogs liquid supplements may be best and capsules are made for humans.. big difference in weight H
  20. awww! thats nice..... everyone shoud have the most awsomest dogs in the world... i know mine are... H
  21. You don't. You adore this dog and watch him live. And cherish every moment he gives you and makes you laugh and smile; every naval contemplating moment he shares with you. And you take a leaf from his book - the one that says "live for the moment" and which teaches you not to dwell in the past or dread the future. Ditto this from me... those pics are of a dog loving and living life in doggy fullness.... how wonderful that this gorgeous lad has been gifted that opportunity.. we humans often cloud the present with the tears for what will happen inthe future... byall means prepare but remain in thepresent as do our wonderful dogs.. hugs to you the journey is never easy but it is filled with riches beyond counting b;essings H
  22. teh breeder sounds somewhat foolish in the responses. Your dog sleeping on your bed is not a problem on the otherhand if fido is one the bed and refuses to allow you on the bed thenthat of course is a totally different situation Cheers H
  23. i have observed LGDs for some years now.. and they are incredibly smart and aware of the smallest changes in their environment. Sadly because they are not the most malleable or obedient of breeds many see them as ignorant or slow nothiong could be further from the truth. I have had maremma call me when a doe or ewe is having trouble lambing, calling to let me know that something ""really bad"" is happening and extra assistanbce is needed.. they are amazing helen
  24. star pickets and weldmesh.. works a treat easily to handle, easy to put up and take down. wire the panels together against the start pickets H
