  1. I have a cat one My two city moggies used to go board at a place which certainly didn't have any luxury .. but where they were happy . The lady bred both devon rex's and wolfhounds! My two usually were dropped off by her ..and she would open the carrier - whereby both cats would slide out, and smooch all over her , purring happily they were always in good condition, and never came home with any illness . i have had good experiences whenever i have needed to board my dogs. even tho Brian and Maxwell always gave the kennels a run for their money. brian ( yello lab) once escaped his pen.. and they had to lure him back with some good quality steak.. it took them three days LOL. He did not get outside their boundary fences tho. His face was cut when he had squeezed thru the wirrre. we were told immediately. maxwell was a regular at his kennels... and whne he was moved to the shiny new boarding facilities.. just like home etc he was most put out and howled until he was returned to his usual downmarket abode. he had the habit of climbing out and jumping into other peoples cars waiting togo home. magali-- female maremma was well cared for at one of the kennels near me for the duration of her season. she was returned snowy white just bathed and dried. i was most impressed. H
  2. sorry for your traumatic loss. May you and your family find peace about this. RIP both dogs. as for why... sometimes we just need to accept that dogs are dogs and we humans cannot truely comprehend what happens in these situations. blessings Helen
  3. http://www.veterinarypracticenews.com/vet-...production.aspx just a heads up for users of this spot on product cheers H
  4. many many years ago i was amazed to watch a medium sized black male dog wandering about our local shopping center ( back in the days when both kids and dogs went about their business free and unfettered).. he wandered about sniffiong and collecting the doggy messages that had been left etc.. thne it was time toleave his mark. Carefully carefull he sniffed , and moved about, sniffed some more just to get the perfect spot, turned ,and lifted his only back leg....another cursory sniff and off he wandered and rejoined his band of kids.. obviously no one had told him he would need to mark another way as he no longer had two back legs.... 5. my boy guiness had several debulking surgeries.. they were nasty and involved the base of his mouth as well as his gum area. however after the second day he seemed quite ok. Soft foods for a wee while and keeping an eye out for any infections. he was on pain relif as well. Good luck helen
  6. ok then... these epulides can be invasive and nasty and grow to an enormous size. . For Guiness the specialist wanted to remove the epulis and a large amount of jaw on either side. I chose not to go that route... Guiness was helped from this world three years later. he had several debulking surgeries but finally was tired and needed to be let go.
  7. to the vet.. it could just be an epulis but then it could be something more sinister. My late Guiness McGuinness had Acanthomatous epulis. check out here: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=...89&aid=3057 Helen
  8. what tests have actually been carried out??? if you do not know ask your vet for specific details and also for the results ie a copy of the report. it is not possible to diagnose cushings disease from a standard blood test. The most commonly recommended test is a low dose dexamethasone suppression test (LDDS). This test takes most of a day to run. A blood sample is drawn early in the morning and immediately afterwards dexamethasone is administered intravenously. In four hours a second blood sample is drawn and after 8 hours a third blood sample is drawn. The cortisol levels of the samples are compared. If Cushing's disease is not present, the cortisol levels should go from normal levels to very low levels (they are suppressed). If Cushing's is not present, the cortisol levels remain high after the injection of the dexamethasone. An alternate test is the ACTH response test. This test is less sensitive to the presence of Cushing's disease but can be run much more quickly, making it more convenient at times. To do an ACTH response test, a blood sample is drawn any time during the day and then a hormone, adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) is administered. An hour later (two for some ACTH preparations) a second blood sample is drawn. If the results of the second sample show markedly elevated levels of cortisol, it indicates that Cushing's disease is present. There are other tests that help to determine what type of Cushing's disease is present but one of these two tests is a good idea to determine if Cushing's disease is present. the tests required to definitively diagnose addisons disease involves the ACTH stim test but these examples are indicative: BUN (Blood urea nitrogen) 47 mg/dl (normal = 7-27 mg/dl) Creatinine 2.1 mg/dl (normal = 0.4-1.8 mg/dl) Sodium 113 meq/L (normal = 141-156 meq/L) Potassium 5.9 meq/L (normal = 4.0-5.6 meq/L) Sodium/Potassium ratio 19 (normal = 27-40) Thyroid diseases also cause these problems. just testing T4 alone is not an adequate indicator. http://www.petplace.com/dogs/weight-loss-in-dogs/page1.aspx http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+1593&aid=421 read read read up on endocrine diseases. also i recommend getting bloods tests carried out and interpreted by Dr Jean Dodds whi is an acknowledged expert is this area. Good Luck Helen
  9. have you popped into the palliative care forum and read thru Ollies story? will give you a better idea of what is happening. i will add my Lucinda lived with MCT grade 3 from aug 2002 until feb 2009.. no clean margins. Lucinda was holistically treated and lived a full and happy life mostly guarding er beloved flock. Ollie had both chemo and is holistically treated ( a perfect combination i feel). keep positive and keep the faith helen
  10. I am just popping in here to second Staffyluvs words. My girl Lucinda lived from august 2002 until Feb 2009 with MCT grade three and no clean margins. ( the oncologist recommended PTS in august 2002. my vet disagreed) Lucinda was mostly holistically treated.. by the same vet practice that treats Ollie. Lucinda lived most of her life as a working maremma livestock guardian dog.. she lived for her flock. keep the faith Helen
  11. hardly a tap on the wrist.. the further away those scum go the better! H
  12. in all the years i have had maremmas they never ever cease to amaze me. One of my guys - Dennys Dog- after storms or gales would collect baby birds that had fallen from their nests and bring them to me!!!! I could scarcly believe it when it first happened. On a less positive note Dennys mother , Magali would chooknap and hold the hen hostage in her shelter...... strange but wonderful girl she was. H
  13. i am seething!!!!! so angry about these paltry taps on teh wrist. I am going out to sit with my dogs H

  17. love those airport beagles... thatis until one of teh little innocewnt sweethearts comes and sits beside youLOL. A friend in the us who does SAR has pits.. says they are the very top of the list as their drive to keep going under applling conditions is astonishing. ( she and her dog worked 9/11 searches) H
  18. i second ernys suggestions. does gemma have any other health issues? ears, eyes etc. check the condition of her skin, flakey, normal, greasy, flakey and greasy, is her fur soft and healthy or rough and breaks easily? what is her odour like??? sortof wet mouse/dog smell?? helen
  19. my dear late Miss Sophie was kept comfortable during her last 6 years with a mix of traumeel, and then meloxicam when and if needed. She also has a regular chro adjustment. we tried acupuncture but The divine One let the vet know that further attempts to needle her would result in one final and memorable laying in of the royal teeth on her part. ( you sort of need to have known her to see how funny this was!!!!) She also really liked her magnetic mat... before the mat she would always stretch out full length... once she had slept on the mat for the first time she would carefully curl herself around until her entier wolfie x dane body was on the mat .. from this i assume that it made some sort of difference for her. The Divine One is still greatly missed around here... bless her beautiful bewhiskered face and her indominitable will. H
  20. by all the powers that be.. \Bay is one tough tough dog... i am so pleased that he has survived... helen
