How To Keep An Older Dog Warm Outside During The Day?
dogbesotted replied to charliehotel's topic in Aged Dog Care
there are some lovely zip up polar fleece dog coats that may be good for your boy. My jake just about lived in his over the winter months. and as it was like a doggy vest it did keep him nice and cosy. helen -
talented ! lovely expressive drawings... i am envious. I really like the shar pei expression but they are all extremely expressive and full of life. well done h

I live in sunny qld. Had jake before the legislation came in in qld. Councils had the "choice" of banning or imposing draconian requirements to gain a permit to keep such a dog.. my council chose not to ban.. so some trusting folks registered their pitbulls, went the due process and 6 months later council changed their minds.. and guess what..council then demanded that the owners either move from the shire or euthanise their dogs. Keep in mind here it was illegal to sell or give away or rehome the dog. I had a bad feeling initially and did not register my boy ( i am normally a law abiding citizen) thank God i didnt. Jake passed away 5 years later.. but we spent those five years in fear that someone would dob us in. And for us moving was not a financial option. I am totally opposed to breed bans, Helen

still keeping you both tucked into my thoughts H -
LOL I hear what you are saying.. when I had jake (pitbull) people would meet him with trepidation as he was a bit battered looking and after being on teh receiving end of some serious bully loving and attention would say something along the lines of " what a gorgeous dog.. are you sure he is a pitbull?" me yep. then "oh well he obviously is not one of those who fight " in reality jake spent the first 6 years of his life being fought by his miserable owner. When exhibiting my sheep and their maremmas people would often remark that the dogs could not possibly be maremmas... as they were too calm and too big!!!!! sigh... H

well said actually that quote is a load of excrement.. a myth perperated by the ignorant., try getting innformation from those who are knowledgable about dogs, training and the pitbull. Diane Jessup is an acknowledged pitbull 'expert' and her site give a warts and all opinion. I have immense respect for her. I also have had the joy of sharing part of my lifes journey with Jake.. a pitbull rescued from fighting. Jake stole my heart then shattered it into a million pieces 6 years later when he died.... No pitbull are not for every dog owner, just as livestock guardian breeds are bot suitable for all dog owners, http://www.workingpitbull.com/ Helen In memory of Jake

Right now they are as skinny and as long as your little finger. That can be indicative of a narrowing of the large intestine or rectum (for whatever reason that might be). I know when I was searching to try to narrow down the source/reason for my own boy's problems, that I've read of the things you're mentioning and that it included stools becoming a shape like thin ribbon (is that what it is like?) but I can't track back to the very thing it was indicative of. Does your dog's anus look ok? Swollen? A bit red? Or just normal? small thin stools would i suspect be normal for a dog who is not eating much but here goes: i am also assuming that Indies teeth and gums have been thoroughly checked. and that full blood panel ( including thyroid etc ) have been done( early addisons can have very vague symptoms...)( yeh i know i am taking the discussion to the dark side ) One of the maremma girlies here- Her Royal Highness, The Princess Angel ( and you should bow or curtsey in her royal presence ) had similar symptoms.. and vet thought a blockage in her bowel.. it was actually a tumour in her pelvic canal.. that being said she strained to poop, did thin long poops, but the full bowel could be felt. she also would not eat or only a few tiny mouthfulls at a time, would be friendly with us and Hairy Beary, come up for meals, but snif and walk away from food Since initial dx she has had several trips to vet for enemas.. mainly after eating something long dead that has blocked things upagain. she gets parafin oil, and metamucil or similar in several small meals a day. Vit B inj can help stimulate appetite as can nutrigel rubbed on the gums. Is Indie getting anything to prevent hypoglycemia? ie glucose or maple syrup or lectade maybe consult with a holistic vet as well... Hope you get an answer soon.. this is a terribly worrying situation as all dog lovers well know. helen

Very Old Dog With Stomach Problem?
dogbesotted replied to Her Majesty Dogmad's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
she needds to get to a vet so either the hard mass of feaces can be removed or whatever is causing the problem can be diagnosed. One of my girls, Angel had very similar symptoms...and a history of passing very small stools. to cut a long story short, the problem was eventually dxd as a tumour in her pelvic canal. .. inoperable due to size, position etc. Angel two years later is still here.. we have had four days at the vet getting enemas to clear a blockage.. but so far so good.. small feeds 2 x per day with added oils and an anti inflamatory... so check it out H -
that is outrageous on the part of PP... why am i not surprised h

Chronic Unknown Skin Condition - Desperate
dogbesotted replied to pixandpug's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
ok i will be the one to suggest a complete thyroid panel( not just T4) ... the whole shebang. It is not expensive and is frequently overlooked. preferably sending the sample off to Dr Jean Dodds. I know of several cases of dogs being treated for skin problems which after 3 years of treatment with cortisone ,antibiotics, medicated washes etc etc turned out to have a thyroid issue. so it is well worth pursuing. have a read here for starters: http://www.newmanveterinary.com/Hypothyroid.html good luck PS what wrong with a dog on the bed??????? -
OMG!! I just got in from feeding my brother to read this!! Glad Ollie is more settled. My heart too is pounding .. Ollie dear heart your adoring fans are sending loads of soothing healing energy to enfold you.. not to mention love Helen
